  • I am done with extreme minimalism because I realized that this lifestyle is not helping me to live a fulfilling life. Extreme minimalism can be very valuable for digital nomads, people moving frequently or out of other reasons, but for me, I have realized that it adds more pressure than value.

Minimalism is not a competitive sport. What matters is what works for you and your circumstances; you should never have to justify your choices to this community. Thank you for your honesty and pragmatism.

Minimalism in the extreme is miserable.. be intentional be ethical, choose sustainable, never be wasteful , be mindful be grateful , be a great mom and a great friend., spend time wisely and love every minute .. .. don't be miserable just to be minimal , that's extreme 👍

Lia, you are right, minimalism is as individual as we all are. You are more extreme than me, but maybe less extreme than others and that is absolutely ok. I take inspiration from you as I simplify my life and work through a lifetimes clutter. I sometimes wish I had come to this realisation sooner, then I would have far less stuff.

Thank you for your comment! Yes absolutely! But I think for every single person "extreme minimalism" would mean haven the absolute least amount of stuff while "minimalism" can also mean having a bit more, having stuff that is not only a need but also a want ☺ I am glad you are happy decluttering your life and I wish you a lot of fun and success on your further journey ☺

I have always said that extreme minimalism is no different than hoarding. It’s just the opposite end of the spectrum.
Both revolve around the number of possessions one owns and the guilt one feels.
Minimalism is supposed to be freeing. I’m glad you are setting yourself free again.

I choose not to have clutter. I choose not to use products tested on animals. I choose to buy things from independents or co operatives. I choose to invest in ethically produced and sustainable products. I prefer to call my choices 'A Curated Life'. It makes me feel more joyful to live in this way. Yes it is minimalist but everything I have, I love. Every item I own has a story and a life of its own.

And I think everyone's number of items will be different. I appreciate that you are authentic & true to yourself, as we should all be. Excellent content.

Very interesting. I wouldn't see this as any sort of failure or even a step back in minimalism. I personally think that after six years you have reached and exceeded your 'minimalist journey' in regards to decluttering and emptying your life of needless things and tasks etc, and now you are calm and ready to take on more or new things, along with having had the chance to discover what brings you passion and joy in your life and reintroduce what you want. That should be celebrated.

I think maybe a better thing to call it, at least for me is intentionalism. That way if we ever decide to have more stuff, make sure it has meaning, be intentional with it. I’m a musician and I have a few bass guitars and other musical equipment that other people would say that I’m not a minimalist. I think of myself of more of an intentionalist.

I always admire extreme minimalists wardrobes but I think that it would make me anxious and constantly thinking about stuff (that I can't forget to do laundry, and non stop thinking about replacing items that are degrading quickly due to frequent use). And thinking more about stuff makes minimalism kinda pointless :)

I totally understand you. In my heart of hearts I desire more than anything to be an extreme minimalist in order to be able to travel with no ties, but for the next 10 years at the very least that isn't going to be possible. I also have my own cleaning business and with that comes an insane amount of supplies. Whilst people around me acknowledge how little I actually own, I feel overwhelmed by my possessions to the extent I feel I desperately need to do yet another declutter, but the reality is my current lifestyle won't allow for that. I see the extreme side of minimalism as a long term goal to work towards for when I retire- as it's only then that I can truly let the remaining bulk of my possessions go.
I love your videos! I'm really excited about your new venture. Could that also come with a new 'knit with me' channel to run alongside this one? xxx

I really enjoyed this video. I had stopped watching several extreme minimalists because it felt like an extremely unenjoyable competition to me. I'm a minimalist because I DON'T want to have to fuss with, or think about my stuff all the time. Trying to attain and maintain extreme minimalism defeats that goal for me. I want to enjoy life and all of its phases without being obsessive about what I own. As long as it's not owning me, I'm good. I hope you'll feel happier and more at peace with your decision now, really appreciate the authenticity.

Minimalism for one person may be totally different for another. I don't believe there is one way of minimalism. I know I would be viewed as a maximalist. But, I have sections for things. Example, If all my sweaters don't fit in this one area, I have to get rid of some if I buy more. I'm not boxing things up and putting them away on the attic. I use everything I have or else it has to go. Makes me happier than to have to fit into someone else's idea of what I should do. Do you! Be happy!

"To be extreme in any part of your life, you have to devote a lot of time and energy to it."
I am clapping my hands right now. An amazing message. It took me literally about ten years to understand this, I have always tried to be extreme in many things, do things very well etc. So yes, I can totally identify myself with this message.
I used to go to gym, and I wanted very good results in a relatively short amount of time. I was studying, and I wanted the best results of all in my class. I used to learn three languages at once (English, Spanish, and German), and I was striving to be incredibly fluent in every single one of them, and I wanted it fast. I wanted to have a very good system in my things and matters, so I created huge categorization documents and files so that everything is clear and easy to find. And there were many more things.
I would also add to your message this one:
"If you want to be extreme in something, choose wisely what it's gonna be because it will take a large portion of your focus, attention, and time."

Whilst I am definitely not a minimalist watching people like you has taught me to appreciate the items I do have and buy and consider sustainable ways to shop which in turn over the course of the last 6 months has allowed me to declutter and only keep great quality pieces that I now have a new found love for and want to look after. Focused on quality and things I love. Don’t be hard on yourself, people will always criticise as we are all unique ❤️

I admire your honesty. I began watching minimalism videos about a year ago and was convinced that I should get rid of about 80 percent of my belongings. But somewhere along the way I realized maybe decluttering was all I really needed to do. My home is clean and orderly, but I have items I haven’t used in a while and things I’ve lost interest in that are taking up room. I’m gradually parting with these items as I come across them and I’m content just doing that. I admire your lifestyle because it’s so simplistic, but I can’t seem to to do it myself. So it all comes down to what you said about doing what’s best for each of us individually. I can’t wait to see what your future videos will bring to us. 🤗

I feel like I'm in a similar place. For years I focussed on minimizing, but recently I realized that less stuff doesn't always equal more happiness. Now that my life is less cluttered there is room to think about new things. For instance I bought one belt and sorta forbid myself from having more than one. But I realised it gives me so much joy to have 4 options of belts that I can match to different outfits.

In the back of my mind I kept saying: “An artist can never declutter that much”.

Everything has a season. I have two little children, and I know I couldn't live by extreme minimalism in this stage of life (although I am very much a minimalist by way of my personal possessions, but I live with my husband and two kids who aren't so much). When our children grow older I think I'll be motivated to really live more "extreme", but for now, it'd be too stressful. Nonetheless I'm staying on this journey, as every stage offers so much! I love your first 2 points in this video, I can relate a lot. Thank you!

For me minimalism is about not consuming
Chucking stuff (that was once money) is not a solution.
I consume what I bought intentionally and those that I cannot consume as is, I convert into something useful by being creative.
Else I responsibly find a new home for it.
Throwing stuff out to landfulill makes your home look great but it's s*itty for the environment.
Ever since I started composting cardboard boxes from @m@zon, I realized what a pain it is to responsibly dispose of it. So I stopped buying :)

We are all different. We are all evolving. I love that you are so honest. I aspire to have only what I need and/or what I enjoy but I struggle to get rid of stuff. My daughter is not a minimalist. She loves clothes and enjoys putting together her outfits but she buys most of her clothes second hand the sells or donates them back to the charity shop. That's a pretty good option for her and the planet. If you have one or two extra jumpers, so what? They'll last longer! As a knitter myself, I look forward to seeing more knitting content.

Minimalism. What do i really Need? And what do i want? I do not Need 300 Books. But i do love having these. I reread them, i love the closet they are in. They still are my company for many hours wellspend. I may give away some. I may gain some.
I have a small closet for clothing. I may add a dress i do not Need. I Will not add a closet.
I love knitting. I have a space reserved for yarn and tools. As long as IT fits there.. IT is fine.
I do not have 20 pairs of shoes. I have one pair for most days. Some dedicated pairs (garden and Paint, weddings and funerals, walks over 10 kilometer, sports, swimming on pebble and rock beaches). I only replaced Them when they are truly ready.
Minimalism to me is not having An overflow of stuff on all the things. Dedicated spaces and enough to go comfortabele trough life. Hoving room for what i love.
IT also is thinking about where i life, how i spend my time.
I do not Need 20 coats. I do Use 4 different ones. One Just for rain. One for gardening. One for fall and spring and one for winter. Not 9 for winter.
A Friend of mine has 3 skirts and a pair of jeans. I could but.. i do not have 7 family members that also create laundry. I have a little more than one washing load, do i do not have to run halfempty loads.
I could be having one set of cutlery, one plate, one mug. I have enough for 10. Cause then my dishwasher is filled and i could have a Friend over.

Really lovely and totally understandable. I myself have been in this thought process. Being an extreme minimalist brings with it it’s own pressures and doesn’t end up giving you the peace it’s supposed to create.
Also like you say in the video it’s not sustainable if you keep decluttering to bring in new things - it’s still consuming. But because it’s in a small amount, we lie to ourselves and think it’s ok. At the end of the day it’s still not acknowledging the mindset and heart. Well spoken and lovely video, all the best with your future honest content xx

I think the moment you start putting numbers on it, it becomes toxic. Trying to only have a certain number of an item can be very stressful. Minimalism will look different for everyone, it’s all about being intentional about what we keep and bring into our home. I consider myself a minimalist and own 20 perfume bottles, which may seem excessive to some but I love perfume and they all get rotated and used. On the other hand I can careless for purses and only have one. Do whatever works for you. Just remember to be intentional about it.

I’m not a minimalist but I have been intentionally simplifying my stuff so I can have more time and headspace for the things I want to do at this stage in life. But last night I went to a Christmas party at my neighbor’s house and she had Christmas stuff everywhere. She does 5 rooms of Christmas and even has an entire storage room just for her Christmas stuff. I have to say her home was so inviting and there were so many fun things to look at. I started thinking about buying more Christmas stuff to make my house a little more fun for the season. Her stuff actually brings her joy and she actually uses it to make her home interesting and beautiful. I don’t want anywhere near what she has has but I think I might get a little more Christmas just for fun. Enjoy your life! It’s always ok to pivot and you don’t need to explain to anyone. RUclips would probably promote you even more if you went to the opposite extreme now. 😉

Very wise logic, Lia. I am by no means an extreme minimalist, but the majority of my acquaintances and family members all consider me/label me to be very minimalist. It is all relative to others' perspectives and each of our own needs. That should be the beauty of minimalism - it is able to be individualized and intended to be a healthy and happy lifestyle for that person.

I used to watch a lot of minimalists who lived in very tropical environments and I remember feeling bad about myself for having clothes for all 4 seasons. I can't help that I live in a place that has very hot summers and very cold winters. Minimalism is about what works for you as an individual and not about comparing yourself to a different person who can exist with less. It took me way too long to realize that lol

I get it. Great message. I’m new to the idea of minimalism but the little I do know says …. Decluttering made room for the knitting to surface, and that’s the goal. Get the stuff out of the way so the passions can present themselves.

Loved this video... I also de cluttered and then found I had done it to to much of an extreme for me to be content. I think its always an ongoing process so its good to hear someone speaking to this. On a total side note I love the idea of you adding to your business by starting a online shop of knit items--especially if this is an activity you love and find fulfillment from and could provide goods/services that would better other peoples lives. I also think you could produce a series that teach people how to repair items if that is of interest for you and that could be a paid course on your website or something. Thanks so much for all you share.

Good for you!! I've experienced a similar mind shift. I turned to minimalism a few years ago to get away from the consumerism society, but instead I started to CONSUME minimalism. I was obsessed at one point, and actually quite stressed out. I think it's a journey for everyone, and I'm happy I went through those experiences too. Now, still a minimalist, I'm more carefree and I can relax into knowing that minimalism is a tool, not necessarily my whole life.
Didn't know you lived in Sweden for a while! Where about?
    Take care 🌸

Such a great video! So sad that there are people out there who criticize you on being an extreme minimalist. I consider myself a minimalist but I have way more things than you. Living in Montreal where it is cold, I need a lot of cold winter clothes. Minimalism is a mindset and not about the number of things that you own. Well done Lia!

I like Joshua Becker’s definition of minimalism…” Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of anything that detracts from it”. Nothing about ‘numbers’. So glad to hear you are making necessary adjustments for you and your life. Good for you and thank you for sharing your minimalist journey and process.

I'm so glad you talked about this, Lia! I'm still on my journey towards minimalism (after 3 years) and some of us sometimes have high expectations when it comes to the result, which may not be compatible with our lifestyle. For example, I'm a teacher at kinder and primary school, as much minimalist as I can be, of course I need STUFF to work, lots of paper, markers, notebooks, scissors (in plural), many things that other people don't need. So thank you for being honest ❤️
I still consider you an extreme minimalist even if you have more than 3 sweaters haha
    Hugs from Argentina!

my definition of minimalism is to have what I need and also what I really want to have. some need more, some less ... for me going to extreme is not good in the long run.

I believe you can help the audience even better to help and advise on e.g.. sustainable clothes you tried, or sustainable and health products ....you won't be a not minimalist by doing that.
That extreme part always bothered me. Particularly if you have a child.
😎However I truly believe you could never be a consumerist . You will always be very intentional. Looking forward for your new videos.

Life is the ever-flowing. You must find balance. I also am a minimalist but I find that making your own items from hand when possible is an awesome practice. When the heart is involved in our creations we cherish them more and value the time we put into them.

I very much enjoyed this video Lia! I have occasionally turned my own decluttering down a bit when I've realized I was starting to think Way too often about it. I think its super easy with minimalism, particularly the extreme minimalism ethos, to start turning the ideals into a little bit of a mental problem. Especially at times when you lose a loved one, or something that turns your mind to thinking oh my gosh, what would I do with all this Stuff if anything happened??!! But I think worst case scenarios, or end of life scenarios can be useful to trigger you to start thinking about consumption & decluttering....at first, but notlong term. I feel like you have to shift to a less black or white mindset. Or I should say that is useful for me. I have known some hoarders over the years and I do not know if my feeling of needing to be more gentle with myself about these ideas works with them. (Nor do I know for sure it doesn't...grin, I just know that it gets a little cray cray if I view it from that standpoint personally!) Also, I too am a Crafter/Maker & I have realized I need a certain amount of material in one place to feel gestational? if that makes sense? I once decluttered my art supplies too deeply, then over the months realized I spent more time realizing oh, I do not have what I need, then running out spending gas & time & money...then coming home too tired to do anything with the newly purchased things. The only thing an intense declutter seems to have done for me, is to make me appreciate that I need a certain amount of stuff as an artist. And also, that a lot of the minimalism activists are in fact, just what you named them, Digital Nomads. They are Not living the life that most artists are living. Oops...apparently, I feel more passionately about your topic than I realized. Apologies for the Looong comment!
