I agree with others that the art feels more like the alt. covers’ style… Doesn’t match the style of the regular core books’ covers at all. The art’s well done for what it is, but I hope they offer a different version too with something more epic and in tune with the standard covers.
Art is nice and really delightful. But my opinion, it is a bit distracting because depicts certain characters. DM-screen should depict landscape, town, dungeons and dragons😅 as previous ones. I wish there will be various types of screens.
I use most of my DM screens as wall-mounted artwork (fit really well in the void spaces of my living room above the windows), so I'm glad to get one that has some humanoid characters for my niece to admire, given the preponderance of dragons in my D&D-themed decorations hasn't exactly connected with her (as a young girl) but she loves the Young Adventurer's Guide books because of the cool character illustrations inside. Point being, I think this is a good idea from WOTC as the artwork of this DM screen appeals to a younger audience of players, and D&D is, in my opinion, at it's best when it's welcoming in new, young players (when I was a young boy the preponderance of dragons connected with me, I loved the Draconomicon when it was given to me as a gift by somebody that didn't even know what D&D was but thought I'd like the dragons, and that's broadly the same experience I hope to provide for my niece in the next few years as she becomes more capable of playing an actual game of D&D instead of just "watching"). She always loves halfling and gnome artwork especially, because she's still young enough to not quite connect that they're "fully grown adults" (or at least, actively suspends her disbelief, which is the goal) and pretends they're really cool kids with magic clothing. I've already got plenty of cool DM screens I can use during a "normal" session, but I'll definitely be using this screen when I start DMing for my niece.
The art is cool, its just not a style I enjoy in this context. Don't get me wrong, its beautiful art, but a little too cartoony for what I imagine a DM Screen should be. If one comes out that has the big oil-canvas fantasy style that tends to be on the covers of most books, then I'd get that one. Not going to hate on the art because I do like it. It's just the wrong context for me.
I would say this about the entire revised system....not enough gritty combat/tension that drew me to the game in the first place, both in gameplay and in art styles. Sorry, but I just don't want a cheery fun place where everyone is superpowered, spending their days frolicking in the meadow playing with fuzzy bunnies and with their best buddy, Smiley the Unicorn.
I agree, plus the screen should conjure the "other world" with a landscape. As being the thing that players see all the time it should be like the background of a stage, portraying the surroundings of the scene. The more generic, the better, with minimal details on its fantastic nature (flying dragon in the distance, a weird light shining through the top window of a lonely spire, bright red eyes piercing through the dark of the forest...)
Yeah this feels more like the special edition DM Screen option then the basic one. The style matches more with those cover then the art on the basic PH and DMG.
What would be really nice on a DM screen with all those Condition reminders is a thin sheet of metal behind that panel, so you could put little numbered magnets to remind you which monsters have which conditions

Art is a miss for me. The characters are cool but this feels like something that should be in the PHB. I feel like DM screens should be setting tone of the game and what the players will encounter - not the characters themselves.
Character illustrations can *inspire* and remind players that they're playing a *fantastical* game. Every PC ought to be reflected somewhat, since It depicts _every_ *species* and *class.*
@@BryanTheDM Well when the very first DM screen for 5.5e itself is just so damn whimsical, then IT IS setting the tone for the entire campaign especially for new players of the game.
What about a digital DM drop-down on dndbeyond? A drop-down that is customizable with quick reference tables that all a DM would need to do is hover and the reference screen came down to reference you could even do multiple cover spots for each panel of the DM screen.
Could the make an alternate version without specific characters already on it? I want my players to imagine their characters in front of that dragon or looking down at a besieged castle. I didn't want them staring at other adventurers.
As other people are saying, I don't think character art belongs on DM screens. Townsfolk could possibly be acceptable, but the art for the DM screen should definitely focus more on the setting, monsters, and adventure rather than player characters. I think a mural of landscapes, dungeons, and a villain would've served better. Also just personal tastes but mixing so many pink accents with yellow, orange and red in the color design just looks bad in my opinion, it feels like rainbow sorbet ice cream. Honestly if WOTC just made a few DM screens that had alternate art/themes I think they'd make some bank, a $20-$30 themed screen is much more affordable compared to the $70+ custom ones you see at conventions.
Artwork is a huge miss for me. For those who also are not feeling it, Beadle and Grimm just released a map pack that has - in addition to all the maps - a gorgeous new DM screen. However, the downside it's Beadle and Grimm, so you're paying a good chunk of change for all the quality content that also comes along with it.

The art is very good, but it's far too specific of a type of art to appeal to the broad range of players you're targeting.
The artwork on the DM screen isn’t bad, but it feels a bit too bright and cheerful for my taste. I miss the gritty, intense vibe of high fantasy art-the kind that Frazetta brought to life, where you could almost feel the weight of the adventure. It’s Dungeons & Dragons, not a walk through a fairytale meadow. I’d love to see a return to that darker, more serious tone that reminds you just how dangerous and thrilling these worlds can be.

Why try to speak for everyone? Regardless of whether I like this art or not (I guess it has its use cases), I wouldn't decline opportunities to inspire unity.
I think 5e (2014) had the worst art of any edition except maybe some of the worst scribbled drawings in the 1970s manuals, so I'm glad for any alternative to that, honestly. I maybe would have done something more focused on landscapes and monsters, or just a cool stylish blank look like the old 2e Ravenloft screen, but this is fine.
I'm really not a big fan of this art style. I hope there will be another option. Same goes for the helper sheets from the new DMG, where I hope they will give us the option for clean versions. I mean, it's nice that they want to make things cute and friendly for a portion of the consumer, but that's in contrast to the artwork on the new covers, which is more epic. I personally prefer a more realistic or gritty approach, but am totally fine with the epic art style in the new core rulebooks. But please be consistent with the design of one product line.
i like the information it has and the way they have adapted it to players that have notes on a laptop. The art is good, but i feel its more art for players not the DM. I think of a DM screen as a wide angle shot of a landscape or battlefield being overlooked by a Red Dragon.
At the start of the video they were congratulating each other on the lay out of the Conditions onto only 1 panel... and I am scratching my chin looking at the 2014 DM screen where the conditions are laid out. If I removed the art it easily fits onto one panel as they have done. Not exactly genius level work. And I don't see anything new on the inside, but yeah some blank space with art? It should be full of information not some paintings. I know it's just a promotional fluff video but I don't know why they are hyping themselves up so much.

That very much comes down to personal player preference. Some people play with more grit and realism, others are more about silly whimsical adventures. I will agree that for that purpose, perhaps the art should have been a bit more neutral rather than something focusing on the whimsical cuteness.
The three main books of 5E with Snurre PHB, Acererak DM, and Floating Eyeball MM are epic! 📚 And the Red Dragon screen is amazing as well! The cover artist!
I'm not saying the art is bad, it's good, it just doesn't match how most people imagine D&D. Why making a 50th Anniversary version with Cartoon Network art? They should have used something resembling the amazing art that's inside the book, and for the few that imagine D&D as a cartoon, they should make this available as an Alt Cover.
You looked at all of the DM screens that came before, and you thought that this art style was the best fit for a 50th anniversary homage!? WHY!? I guarantee this art decision has already cost you sales on this product. The art isn't bad, it's just wrong. I will not be buying this product, exclusively due to the art.
Yeah, IMO not a huge fan of the art style. I was actually really excited about the new DM screen since some of the conditions have changed, but I think I’ll either have to buy 3rd party or wait for alt art. The elf with a pelvis window is pretty ridiculous, and I honestly wouldn’t really want to use this DM screen out in public. The dragons are actually really cool, but all the characters (some cool, some … less so) are just not something I want on my DM screen. I want a dragon or some other monster, not really a bunch of heroes with questionable fashion sense.
I also think its weird that they use mirrored gold dragons... So many dragons or other creatures to choose from and they go for a mirrored gold dragon? Kinda lazy. Also agree with the weird crotch window on the elf.. goofy art for sure.

You didn't actually watch the video, did you? They showed and discussed the inside of the screen. Like, you can just pause the video at certain spots and you'll see everything.
As the dungeon master I want to make my players feel engaged when I play the villain so something menacing, or symbolizing the monsters I play as would’ve felt a lot better. I’m not the representation of unity, that’s the party. I think the art is cool but it doesn’t fit with what it’s on
Something about calling D&D cute feels confusing. I like the new rules so far and I am excited. But, I want a screen with an intense battle scene on it.
Watched for 10 minutes and still had to manually pause the video to see, what information is actually on the DM side of the screen... and not all of it is super useful... And yeah, the art is... questionable. Welp, lost 10 minutes, but saved 15$.. thanks, I guess. 😅
The video shots of the DMs side the info are blurred. You can't tell what is on them. Maybe once it is out I'll find out if this will be useful for me.
@@kurtoogle4576 i paused the video on one of the shots with the inner side (for example 02:26) and could at least see the section titles, I hope it can give you the initial impression of usefullness.
The artwork and general layout of the inside is a total miss for myself, I'm not one of those people who use a laptop and you've missed a massive trick by not including the heights and conditions artwork inside that people that might find some reading difficult so used that to guide them quickly.. Hopefully the do an alternative art version that brings back the 'darkness', chaos and mystery to the game rather than this..
That was my immediate thought too. It's just that the culture war is being rubbed under the players'/customers' noses. There is no horde or alliance, so conservative heroic ideas are opposed to those of progressives. 🤔🤣
I absolutely love the art for this screen! It feels commemorative and grand like something out of a castle wall. Plus having the characters featured could jump start people's imagination on things to add to a character! Just like having the art in the book. Definitely pre-ordering this.
Not a fan of the art or the direction they went with the inside contents (which is again too new dm friendly, i mean so much suave for conditions... AGAIN?)
Really, really, really don't like the cartoony artwork on this one. Not my style at all, much prefer the art style on the 5E or the 5E reincarnated sets.
Didnt realize so many people dont like the art, I thought it was vibrant and a refreshing take on the older combat scene screens. Also I feel it reinforces the idea of, "what are the PCs fighting for" and less murder-hobo-y. To each their own though.
I really really like the look of this new GM screen. I get why it doesn't click for other folks. I like gritty, dark fantasy art (like things you'll see with Warhammer, Grim Hollow, etc) but I really like the idea of this being my first DM screen.
Everybody here is talking about the art, but what about the stuff on the back of the screen? I can’t believe they still make the list of conditions into a wall of text. There’s so many better tables out there that are easier to use
Like the character designs. Wish they were depicted as heroic statues in a dungeon instead of living beings though. Would keep the focus on my players and what they think they look like and give me some ancient adventurers to build ideas for legends and lore.
The artstyle looks really cringe. What happened to the grittier and realistic art that makes you feel like you're going on an adventure? In fact the whole 2024 millennial art style looks so clinical and peppy that it feels like it's made by AI. Hard pass for me
@@Optii87 Hate to break it to you, but those born in 1990 to 2000s are now classified as millennials. Hence this very cartoony tumblr esque art style is considered Millenial art.
It looks nothing like the alt covers for the new books. I can't imagine how you think it matches. The alt covers for the new books art cartoonish or garish like this.
Love the art and the style, great choices, my table will be super inspired by this (almost all newbies)! I'm also happy to hear about the design goals for optimizing the screen for DM's with digital devices... that's me! so huugee thaanks!! I picked this up right away! Though admittedly I was already planning on it.
Im the odd one out , i love the art. I think it is fun and the colors are fantastic. I think the art should be player themed. They are the ones looking at it for hours. Especially for a basic screen. If they keep releasing box sets with screens, then that screen should be inspirational for the setting.
The art feels like it's the alt. art for the "actual" screen
Месяц назад+14
The art doesn't fit with the product line up. Seeing characters instead of vistas feels like one is looking back at what you didn't make instead of imagining places you've yet to explore. Increasing font size and then leaving large gaps on the screen suggests this screen will have the least information of any screen we've had. Not an improvement on materials, information or art.
Ew, is there not another more basic, traditional one? Sure, its a cool art piece, but not what I or my players want from the constant, persistent presence of a DM screen.
The art is fun and hopefully will get a whole new generation of gamers excited about gaming just like the 2nd edition dmg screen did for me. I think it would be smart of WotC to have multiple art styles however. Most of the character designs of this layout feel like forced inclusion rather then interesting builds/designs. I had no idea that the dude in the pink dress was a druid tbh, that is a problem when real world identity becomes more important then class design. I have no problems with guys sporting pink dresses.. but again it doesn't make me think of druid duals or ancient lore of the old woods. To each their own I guess :)
I really love this DM screen class, matches perfectly the alt cover books. I'm sure there will be different art styles for next screens, but that's just unique compared to older screens!
My small wish is that someday the DM screen includes a list of random NPC names. To add to that idea, a little table to quickly throw personality traits to the NPC and how they’re useful (or harmful) to player goals! As a DM rules aren’t usually what’s hardest to remember, it’s little improvisational things like this to keep the game moving forward.
I have 3 dm screens. I never used them for informations on them. I use the screen just to hide my notes and monster stats. Are the conditions so hard to understand that you need a entire pannel to know what stun, poison, frightened and blind condition( those are more then 99% of the time) and if it comes something obsured like petrified i can read it from my phone. My combats tend to be more tactical and dinamic so enemies and alies come or flee from the fight so i prefare to have a initiative pace on the table so i dont have to take it off the screen every time something changes.
As a DM, I would be more interested in what information is visible on the back, how it is arranged. Pictures of the DM-facing side would have been much more helpful. That would have helped me more with my purchase decision. Unfortunately, I don't find this post helpful...
I do not like the art at all. It is very character-focused and representative, but not of the characters my players are currently playing. So why not have a nice landscape, a cave (sense of wonder) or something monster related. Maybe 12-year-old kids will find it appealing. The space inside is just wasted, although this helped me in my decision to buy a custom one.
Art is nice piece, but not something I would want up in front. Maybe for some though. If you want to fill different styles, I hope you choose next one to reflect what the long term invested players would like.
You assume I assumed I assumed I meant ALL when I said right before the key note you want to focus is that maybe for some would like it. Go creep elsewhere..@@SortKaffe

The characters feel like such a person/wish fulfillment thing. Beautiful art, but in my opinion it does not belong at anyone else’s table.
Yep. Agreed.
Not feeling the art. Would have liked more of a feel that is on the new books.
3:43 "When I run things, I rarely do combat." bruh
There should be variant art. I don't particularly care for this art style. I wonder if there will be printable sheets we can put in our own screens...
I'm not saying the art is bad, it's good, it just doesn't match how most people imagine D&D.
Why making a 50th Anniversary version with Cartoon Network art? They should have used something resembling the amazing art that's inside the book, and for the few that imagine D&D as a cartoon, they should make this available as an Alt Cover.
it doesn't even match the covers of the books, which thankfully this time around were good and 80's nostalgic
You looked at all of the DM screens that came before, and you thought that this art style was the best fit for a 50th anniversary homage!? WHY!? I guarantee this art decision has already cost you sales on this product. The art isn't bad, it's just wrong. I will not be buying this product, exclusively due to the art.
The art is kinda meh, I will wait for a cooler one to come out.
The art style is not for me. I will just use my Wilderness DM screen instead.
Pink and cartoony isn't for everyone. If you like it, buy it, but don't get bent out of shape when someone prefers Frazetta.
This doesn't look anything like Frazetta what are you talking about
@@laterbotI think that's what Twohandeaxe means. He says that it's OK to like this cartoon ish kute stuff if you like but don't criticize people who like Frazetta.
@@jeannot7784 Frazetta's fine, this is fine. *shrugs* I mean, even the 2014 art with the giant-headed halflings that I loathe is fine for someone else to like.
@@emilyz4104 after reading most of the like and the comments, the general opinion is that this are is fine but it doesn't represent what d&d is about for the magority of the players (and the buyers). And they buyers will buy and play other games that represent what they want to play.
You really made a video about the outside of the dm screen. Can we get one about what is inside? You know, what the dm is actually looking at.
You didn't actually watch the video, did you? They showed and discussed the inside of the screen. Like, you can just pause the video at certain spots and you'll see everything.
Thank you for increasing the font size for all of us older DMs that need our glasses now. 😉
I really , really hope the exterior art is NOT a sign of things to come. I really do not like this childlike naive style.
Like the layout, but I'm not buying it because of the art...
I like everything but the art style. don't know what kinda art it is supposed to be. the screen's info looks great.
For a DM screen, I'm not a fan of that art at all. That looks like "5 Mintute Dungeon", not D&D
Loving everything except the art
Let me edit...I do love the dragons
Still, would have been cool to use 2 different dragons instead of the same art mirrored. Or even having one of them a different sort of creature.
As the dungeon master I want to make my players feel engaged when I play the villain so something menacing, or symbolizing the monsters I play as would’ve felt a lot better. I’m not the representation of unity, that’s the party. I think the art is cool but it doesn’t fit with what it’s on
Another product that I won't be buying.
Something about calling D&D cute feels confusing. I like the new rules so far and I am excited. But, I want a screen with an intense battle scene on it.
Definitely, d&d is suppose to be epic and I don't have this feeling when I look at this screen.
I'll pass. Don't like the art style. And judging by the comments, seems to be the overall sentiment.
Not a fan. Worries me about monster manual.
@kurtoogle4576 change your resolution to 1080p. I can read all of it pretty clearly after doing that. Zooming in on my phone helped too.
@@BobRob113 Thanks Bob!
DM's screens have almost always had useless info anyway. We dont' really need that info in an age of laptops, phones, gaming tables, and ipads tho
The artwork and general layout of the inside is a total miss for myself, I'm not one of those people who use a laptop and you've missed a massive trick by not including the heights and conditions artwork inside that people that might find some reading difficult so used that to guide them quickly..
Hopefully the do an alternative art version that brings back the 'darkness', chaos and mystery to the game rather than this..
why does this remind me of world of warcraft art soooo much though (which in this case, is not a good thing)
That was my immediate thought too. It's just that the culture war is being rubbed under the players'/customers' noses. There is no horde or alliance, so conservative heroic ideas are opposed to those of progressives. 🤔🤣
Ugh.. Was hoping for a list of weapon mastery effects 😣
I absolutely love the art for this screen! It feels commemorative and grand like something out of a castle wall. Plus having the characters featured could jump start people's imagination on things to add to a character! Just like having the art in the book. Definitely pre-ordering this.
Keep hoping that dnd beyond will upgrade their dm screen options from just that encounter builder.
Gonna yoink that interior layout for sure. The art is pretty!
Not a fan of the art or the direction they went with the inside contents (which is again too new dm friendly, i mean so much suave for conditions... AGAIN?)
"Theme was 'Unity'". Lazy vector/cartoonish design. Doesnt showcase the excitement of d&d at all. Boring.
The info on the screen looks great, but the art feels tacky unfortunately
FINALLY! I'm so glad they made the mini version of the DMs screen. A little meta tho...
The info on the inside is nice. There isn't much wasted space like half page of art.
Really, really, really don't like the cartoony artwork on this one. Not my style at all, much prefer the art style on the 5E or the 5E reincarnated sets.
the art kind of sucks... not emotive to me. sorry
For the inner side, you should place holdsters or such, something to stick our own notes and papers.
I like gritty, dark fantasy art (like things you'll see with Warhammer, Grim Hollow, etc) but I really like the idea of this being my first DM screen.
you'll end up with 100 eventually anyway, they 're constantly putting them in different box sets
Everybody here is talking about the art, but what about the stuff on the back of the screen? I can’t believe they still make the list of conditions into a wall of text. There’s so many better tables out there that are easier to use
I too would’ve preferred art for each condition to make it more visually referenceable, tho’ I appreciate compacting it into one panel.
Like the character designs. Wish they were depicted as heroic statues in a dungeon instead of living beings though. Would keep the focus on my players and what they think they look like and give me some ancient adventurers to build ideas for legends and lore.
I’m so excited! Can’t wait to get my first DM screen!
The artstyle looks really cringe. What happened to the grittier and realistic art that makes you feel like you're going on an adventure? In fact the whole 2024 millennial art style looks so clinical and peppy that it feels like it's made by AI. Hard pass for me
That's absolutely not "millennial art style" , millennials are in their late 30s.
@@Optii87 Hate to break it to you, but those born in 1990 to 2000s are now classified as millennials. Hence this very cartoony tumblr esque art style is considered Millenial art.

I personally find the art to be gorgeous - really matches the alt covers for the new core books.
It's not for me. I hope they release other art.
Im the odd one out , i love the art. I think it is fun and the colors are fantastic.
I think the art should be player themed. They are the ones looking at it for hours. Especially for a basic screen.
If they keep releasing box sets with screens, then that screen should be inspirational for the setting.
The art just isn’t doing it for me at all. It doesn’t look like the art from the books and is distractingly cartoonish.
The art feels like it's the alt. art for the "actual" screen
I will stick with my custom made screen, but this looks nice
Ew, is there not another more basic, traditional one? Sure, its a cool art piece, but not what I or my players want from the constant, persistent presence of a DM screen.
Looks great, I love the stylized art and the symmetry of its composition!
For the record, I like the art. Changing things up can be rewarding
I need it. Thanks for all of your hard work.
I love my 4th edition Underdark one. It has drow.
Your passion is contagious.
Outstanding work, team! Thank you for your dedication and passion!
I really love this DM screen class, matches perfectly the alt cover books. I'm sure there will be different art styles for next screens, but that's just unique compared to older screens!
Would have loved a peek inside but it sounds like a huge improvement
My small wish is that someday the DM screen includes a list of random NPC names.
To add to that idea, a little table to quickly throw personality traits to the NPC and how they’re useful (or harmful) to player goals! As a DM rules aren’t usually what’s hardest to remember, it’s little improvisational things like this to keep the game moving forward.
Print a sheet and clip it to your screen. That's half the reason screens are useful.
I know everyone is excited, I love 2024 edition overall but, DM screen for minis? Players was asking for it? What did I missed? ;p
As a DM, I would be more interested in what information is visible on the back, how it is arranged. Pictures of the DM-facing side would have been much more helpful. That would have helped me more with my purchase decision. Unfortunately, I don't find this post helpful...
This one is hideous :c
I want one that looks as good as the artwork in the PHB, in the same style
I do not like the art at all. It is very character-focused and representative, but not of the characters my players are currently playing. So why not have a nice landscape, a cave (sense of wonder) or something monster related.
Maybe 12-year-old kids will find it appealing.
The space inside is just wasted, although this helped me in my decision to buy a custom one.
Art is nice piece, but not something I would want up in front. Maybe for some though. If you want to fill different styles, I hope you choose next one to reflect what the long term invested players would like.
I dig it, so it's bold of you to assume that this isn't something that _"long term invested players would like"_
You assume I assumed I assumed I meant ALL when I said right before the key note you want to focus is that maybe for some would like it. Go creep elsewhere..@@SortKaffe
Oh, screw off with your dog whistles. I've been playing for more than three decades and I think this is fine. Not the best, but not the worst I've seen on a DM screen either.
