  • POV drive of RCR's Vagabond Falcon with Corbin Goodwin. Corbin is the builder of the Zero F#$%&'s Given RX7, as seen on /Drive, the Jettamino as seen on The Smoking Tire, and he is currently building a Rolls Royce into something wonderful. Dan, the builder of Suki, the racy 1989 S13 as seen on a previous RCR episode, is along with us too. Thank you to all the Patreon supporters and RCR fans who are allowing us to showcase a 1960 Falcon as RCR's future flagship car.

    Mr. Regular rocking the dad fashion. Leather sandals and I wouldn't be surprised if he had cargo shorts and a collar shirt tucked in as well as a worn baseball cap.
    But really, you should do a Datsun L28 with triple carbs. It's enough power and you stay with an inline 6.

      iamstd2 I did some googling and the weight is about the same at 2300 - 2700. It could work. It wouldn't be blazing fast, but it could actually keep up on the freeway, if assume.

      andxx0r_the_second If you have a manual transmission, you'll probably get more power to your wheels than that Fordomatic. But the B16/B18 vs the Falcon I-6 is pretty even horsepower wise.

    I still think that you should keep the stock engine if at all possible because if the experiment was to see if this can be used as a regular car & you have to swap the engine then in my mind that shows that you can't. I for one would be pleased to know that you can.

    • @kipamore
      @kipamore 9 лет назад +15

      The Red Bafoon I second keeping the original engine. It ain't regular if you swap it. And it's totally unnecessary - if you want a fast car, get a fast car.

    • @Drinapropriatetouch
      @Drinapropriatetouch 9 лет назад +2

      ***** Exactly, this car is too good as is, if you want to make something faster set out to find something suitable from the start that needs work & go wild with that.

    • @newgenerationisbg
      @newgenerationisbg 9 лет назад

      The Red Bafoon He just needs a transmission with more ratios to make it more suitable. And probably some work under the hood because that thing is nowhere near the 90BHP it should be. If it was, it should have tackled that hill better. But what can you expect from a vehicle that is 55 years old.

      Leslie48 Or convert it to EFI (though that would cost a small fortune from what I know). Now that will be showing it some love. If it can be done with this motor, then it will get a bit of a power boost, and better fuel economy out of it.

    my DAAAAD used to have an old Falcon before I was around. One sunny day he was driving along and the person in front of him screeched to a halt, DAD, being the quick thinking fellow he is, slammed on the brakes as well. The force of the braking and the softness of the suspension caused the car to lean forward like the titanic. Unfortunately the car behind him did not stop as quickly and ended up hitting the back of DAD's Falcon, but because the car was leaning forward on such an angle the car behind simply hit the (indestructible) chrome bumper and gained a couple of huge holes in the front as well as a lot of damage to god knows what else. As for the Falcon... twas not a scratch. Beautiful car, great channel! Have fun may you acquire the attention of many females. With Regards from Australia.

    If you're hell bent on modifying or replacing the powertrain (and after this video I don't blame you) I'd go with a C4 transmission. It's a 3-speed that was used on the 2nd gen Falcon. You still don't get any overdrive or locking torque converter, but it's way lighter than the Ford-o-matic and is a much better transmission. Someone might be able to correct me on this, but I believe you can swap the C4 shifter from a 2nd gen Falcon onto yours without much modification.
    The 260 Windsor was designed to go in that engine bay, but the 289 and 302 are virtually identical size wise, so there shouldn't be (the operative words being "shouldn't be") any fitment issues. You'll find way more of them than you will a 260. If you're doing these swaps yourself in your own garage, keep it as simple and as on the beaten path as possible. You can get in over your head very quickly with these things.
    Another thing to think about is the rear axle. The old 7.25" axle in that thing can't take much torque. If you start adding too much power you'll wear out the 55 year old stock diff quick. I'd go for an 8" axle. The 9" is overkill unless you want to drag race that thing. But now you've spent the time and money to replace three major items on your car.
    If I were you I'd figure out how much power you really need before you start spending money. Remember that the C4 weighs about 100 lbs less than the Ford-o-matic and has less parasitic power loss. There are also some performance mods for the 144 straight-six. Nothing that will blow your mind, but you might find that you can get what you need for a fraction of the time and money.

    • @MalikCarr
      @MalikCarr 9 лет назад +2

      Jonathon Payne This guy knows what's up. There was a Windsor V8 option for the Falcon starting in 1962 or 1963, I see no reason against dropping a motor in there that that car could have originally had.

    • @NameWithheld999
      @NameWithheld999 9 лет назад +2

      Jonathon Payne A C4 will go right in and work with the stock Ford-O-matic column. You just need a detent plate for the shifter that has the position for 3rd gear on it. And and indicator lens for 3rd gear. And a crossmember too because the mounts are different. If I remember right the 1960 had a transmission crossmember that was different from the rest of the falcons, but could easily be modified to work with a c4 if you have welding skills.

    • @emjayay
      @emjayay 9 лет назад

      Eric Rose With the help of Wikipedia to refresh my memory, the new C4 aluminum 3-speed started to be used in the '64 Falcon, maybe just with the V-8 (?) or as an option. Anyway, the '64 looks different but it's just a typical mid-model heavy facelift with all new body panels, also with a lot of improvements like different rear springs etc.

    • @emjayay
      @emjayay 9 лет назад

      emjayay Actually Wiki lists the C4 as being used in Falcons only starting in '65, and in the new Fairlane in '64. Anyway, same story.

    • @NameWithheld999
      @NameWithheld999 9 лет назад

      emjayay Yeah, the C4 did not come out until '64 if I remember right. And it was in the updated Falcons which had a different crossmember and brace under the transmission tunnel, along with structural improvements like torque boxes on the subframe.
      But as far as actually fitting in the car, main obstacles with a c4 into the 1960 Falcon are the crossmember and (maybe) the driveshaft length. Everything else on the conversion can be done with readily available parts.

    Thanks very much for taking me along as I really enjoyed this. Please, please, keep this car OEM. Altering it is easy no brain required ruining of an original, staying OEM is more difficult to do but the car will remain historically correct for people in the future, as it was for you. That car should have a lot more power. Do a compression test and a distributer check. If those are OK, check for the transmission binding.

    I had a 63 comet with the 170 fordomatic and it would get close to 90 provided the fuel pump wouldn't fail which a lot of them did if you exceeded 80. The slop in the steering can be somewhat taken up by adjusting the wear adjuster on the steering box. After I adjusted that most of the slop was gone. Most people seem to not know about this. When held to the floor it would shift into second at 50 with the engine screaming pretty good. It was really cheap and reliable for the most part.

    That's not the engine failing to get the car up the hill; it's the transmission. 1.75:1 first and only a 3.10:1 rear end, there is zero torque there. If it only has a fluid coupler and not a torque converter, that's the rest of the problem. That little 6-cylinder engine is perfectly capable in its own right. :)

Since the "S" in "S13" (or 14 or 15 etc) stands for "Silvia", but the USDM version is just a 180SX (or 240), thats why it's called the "Sil-Eighty".

    I had a 1986 F159 RCLB 300 I6 4 speed man OD and 3.73 open 8.8 rear. I gave a very old fashioned feel in it driving experience. To get it's power up closer to modern standards I put an electric fan on it, an MSD Streetfire coil, wires, plugs, open element k&n filter on the 1bbl carb and ran it straight pipe after the cat. Wasn't too bad after that would go almost 100mph and the acceleration was good enough fir modern traffic. I qas certainly torquey as hell. Would climb any grade. It even pulled a 1998 Explorer v8 awd weighing 5500lbs on a 2000lb Uhaul trailer 90 miles home from an auction. I woukd say a 300 I6 would kick ass in the Falcon but if it won't fit find a rusty cheap Explorer/Mountaineer and swap the GT40P 5.0, 4R70W and 3.73 lsd 8.8 from it into Falcon. I bought that Exolorer 5.0 for $400 at an auction. Engine was strong as hell, trans needed new selanoid springs, rear was great too.

    I have a '60 Comet 2r wagon, originally with a 144/3speed - now with a 289/C4 and all V8/five lug suspension, brakes, and steering. I know exactly what's involved in converting one of these cars to a V8, and it's a big job. The main modification is that the bell housing area of the firewall has to be enlarged a good bit for the V8 spec C4.
    To retain the charm of the original car, a 200/C4 from anything from a Mustang to a Maverick or Granada is a bolt-in, will give you plenty of power, and combined with an early Maverick 4 lug 8" rear end with 2.79 gears, relaxed freeway drivability. The rear end is a bolt-in and is the right width. Swap on a set of Ranchero/wagon front brake drums and shoes (1/2" wider than sedan) along with a '67 Mustang dual drum/drum master cylinder, and you now have much better stopping power. The original column shifter can be used with the C4 with just minor mods. The trans mount is sold aftermarket and is a bolt-in swap.

    As someone who's owned five vehicles (2 FC Doge vans, one 1980 F-100, a Nissan 720, and a '66 Rambler 660 wagon) with manual steering, three of which had four-wheel drum brakes, you drive _much_ differently in that, planning ahead is *_cruicial_*.
    Actually, I have a 25K lb. motorcoach with air-actuated drums at every corner, and it's in your best interests to look *_way_* ahead. Way ahead as in, you back off the accelerator before cresting a pass in the Colorado high country, because you may need to be in 1st or 2nd to keep it from getting away from you on the downhill side.

    I think a 302 V8 swap would suit the character of the car perfectly. It's meant to be a RCR flagship vehicle, a show car. Having a bigger engine in an unassuming little red Falcon would be perfect; much like RCR itself, a show that calls itself "Regular" yet is anything but. Don't go overboard with power, but a V8 with a four-speed would perfectly suit the Vagabond Falcon.
    And maybe lap belts, because we don't want to lose Mr Regular.

    At 11:30, is that an Isuzu Hombre? I would say you should do a review of that, but it's essentially a Chevy S10. Plus you have already reviewed the Chevy Luv. You should REALLY review the Isuzu Rodeo, or, if you can get your hands on one, the Isuzu Vehicross.

    You guys should throw a first-gen SHO V6 in the Vagabond Falcon. There has to be a RWD conversion kit for that engine somewhere, right? I'd love to hear a nice, revvy V6 in a classic Falcon.

    It's already done and gone, but I really do think that one of the coolest possible builds for this car would have been to steal the entire drivetrain out of a 2nd Gen Fusion Sport with the ecoboost engine and just roll the fenders until you can fit the wheels under them. The track width of the Fusion is only 2 inches wider and, like, 3 inches longer, so it could potentially fit. And then you'd have a 2.7L ecoboost V6 putting down around 325HP and leaving some potential for improvements with just ECU tuning. It's a great engine and the default AWD configuration would be really useful in the winters. Plus, in a car that doesn't weigh nearly two tons like the Fusion Sport, you can actually get some halfway decent fuel economy. Only problem is needing to harvest the entire engine loom and make that play nicely with everything, and most people aren't so crazy.

    Keep the 144, but rebuild it. 90HP isn't that weak. Seems to me that's about what the 2.3 Lima motor made, and I know that was strong enough to move a 4 door Fox body with a three speed.
    Maybe some simple upgrades, like the Velleman electronic ignition (which turns the points into a low voltage, low current switch), an alternator, and an electric fan.

    Come on keep her stock! If the men of the 60's could handle the car with that straight 6 and 2 speed auto why can't you?
    But if you did upgrade & modernize the car, would it really be a 1960 falcon anymore?
    No it wouldn't.
    This car will make your road trips 1000x more fun and interesting with it stock, how could you turn that down???!!!

    Listening to your conversation and perceptions of this car made me laugh. I enjoyed the video tremendously. My dad bought a 60 Falcon in November of 59. I can tell you it performed better than the car you are driving. You are driving a warn out old car, so the gas pedal all the way to the floor to get 30 mph uphill isn't the way that car performed when it was newer. The bench seat and steering column mounted shift allowed our girlfriends to sit close to us in the car, among other things when we parked. 😃 Falcons were a great car. I had a 63 convertible when I was in high school. I had a three speed manual transmission, the gearshift mounted on the column. When out on a date with my girlfriend, I could put my arm around her, and she would work the gear shirt while I worked the clutch and steered the car. In the Falcon, the car was so light that you could use one hand to steer that manual steering. For heavier cars, some guys bought a knob that could be clamped onto the steering wheel to assist in one-handed steering. Those earned the name as knuckle busters. I didn't use one. I do agree that you will need to make the car safer, so modifying the brakes and adding seat belts is fine, but try to keep the car as vintage stock as much as you can. Rebuild the six cylinder engine because Falcons didn't have V8 engines until the 63 1/2 models hit the market. I am a proponent of keeping old cars vintage.

    Friend of mine had a 69 Dodge Dart. It was utterly pedestrian in 69, like a Camry or Taurus. But fast forward to 2000something and the lines and styling of it had head turning presence, just like this Falcon. Isn't that kinda amazing?

    I know a lot of people may suggest to you to do a somewhat high HP engine swap but i wouldn't do that at all. So, whatever you decide I personally wouldn't go super high HP. My thoughts actually would be to go to a junk yard and find a 289 from a vintage late 60's ford and throw some very mild modern parts on there and use (like you said) a 4 speed AOD. As a second option you could grab a fox body mustang 302 motor and do the same with that, very mid top end and headers and you'd have about 200-230HP at the crank which would be perfect. Oh, and def get a disc brake upgrade going with a better master cylinder. They probably have a kit somewhere to add at least lap belts too.

    Usually the diff ratio is listed as final drive. Maybe you already figured that out in the rest of the video but yeah... And according to the internet, like you found out yourself, it is indeed a 3.10 diff ratio.
    And OMG Corbin. I wish he'd do more with his youtubechannel, he's like the most epic mechanic there is. I also really LOVE the car :)
    If you compare this thing to a small car from Europe of the same era it's hilarious. Even a much later small European car.. That VW Caddy (Golf/Rabbit pickup) was tiny compared to it.

    You didn't park the Vagabond side by side with Silicone Sally and go "this is my classic car, this is my modern car"...
    I'm guessing the lowest (highest number, it's a ratio but the ":1" isn't always written out) ratio is for wagons with Fordomatic, the inbetween is for Fordomatic sedans and manual wagons and the tallest for manual sedans. But a buyer could special-order anything if he had a good enough relationship with the dealer.

    I live in Morgantown, Pa (used to live up in East Stroudsburg) and my dad bought two ford falcons not too long ago... I think both from 62', one two and one 4 door. But one is automatic with a 66 ford falcon engine in it or something. I never had a interest in cars till now (age 24 and yeah I missed the typical guy thing when I was younger) and I recently moved back home after college like most people. So I've been able to hang out and learn a bunch helping my dad work on these. We just pulled the 66 engine and transmission last week. It blew my mind that there is like just 4 bolts holding it in really. They were rusted to hell and back but still a couple tubes and bolts. Also I love the channel. You do a good job complimenting and making fun of the japanese cars I like.... especially ones from a certain cartoon. haha

    funny that he said "this was a mustang before the mustang was cool" because that's exactly what an early 1960s for falcon is! After the Edsel, ford was in a lot of financial dire straits, and decided to be innovative. They took the falcon platform, slapped a cool body on and called it a mustang. By producing a sexy car the public desired, and at a reasonable price is what saved Ford.

    A friend of mine drives a '62 Falcon with the 170 and 2-speed. I thought that thing was hard-pressed to climb a hill, I can't imagine how bad the 144 is.
    I daily drive a '66 Valiant with a 225, that thing flies up hills without a shudder or hint of doubt. Where the Falcon climbs a certain pass at 20, the Valiant does it at 65.

    I hope you keep the original engine and trans but get them improved. That keeps the integrity of the car and makes it fascinating. Now as for shocks and brakes, change them for all you can to make a safe and reliable car. If you bored the 144 a little and tweaked the carb a little, would the trans handle it? If so, you could go with that too. Wonderful vid. Thanks

    Interestingly enough, my 1992 Ford Sierra has only a single indicator for both turn signals as well. I wonder whether it was completely random across their cars and at which point did they completely get rid of it. Pretty sure the European fords had it for quite a bit longer compared to the US.

    Don't even begin to think about doing an engine swap on this car. You'll ruin what makes it good and cool. Leave it alone, just fix what needs fixing', like you would on any "regular" car. I rather see you drop an LS into the Fit than put another engine in the Falcon.
