Why Did Yugioh Rush Duel Fail?

  • Yugioh released a new way to play the game called "Rush Duel" that sought to bring a more fun and accessible way to play the game, but 4 years after release, and the game seems almost irrelevant. How could this have happened?

The fact that komoney developed an actually interesting gameplay loop with infinite normal summons, draw until 5 every turn, maximum monsters as actual boss monsters that are split into 3 separate cards, sending cards from deck to activate effects and returning cards from grave to activate strong effects yet failing to print halfway decent cards that can be used in the deck outside of filler cards.
This could have also been a good chance to prevent multiple copies of the same card to vary the gameplay with the same deck.
Fusions could have had a universal rule of being contact fusions by sending cards from deck to summon them instead of the traditional fusion spell then add contact fusion later because of nostalgia. I would have loved to make fusions be send the top 3 cards from deck, fuse two monsters on field as the normal fusion mechanic in rush. Also the powercreep at this early stage is going strong as the second season of rush duels makes practically all vanilla monsters L4 1500 attack. Instead of lowering the power of the cards from the original card game, they are already introducing super power creep that makes most old cards irrelevant already.

I don't mind Rush Duels coming to Duel Links, somehow was a breath of fresh air. The main problem was the currency, for most f2p players avoided expending gems on this new format, i hanged on the cheapest deck available and that was the Tengu deck, took me 3 season to reach KOG but then came the absolute domination of Dragias deck and variations.
The first big box was too expensive, when i got my free UR which was the Yamiruler inmediatly became my favorite but still i was avoiding like crazy expending more than 1k gems on any box, then the Heavy Metal minibox came, it was ok, a formidable and affordable deck but i decided to pass. When the Maximum box arrived, instantly became the best box of the format, you could build 3 decks easily, a very good deal indeed. I decided to stuck with the Harpies. The next thing was the Rebels deck that was too OP, annoying and unfair thanks to its skill. I'll give Konami a point on the side of structure decks, the machine deck was my favorite, the magicians gained strong support and the rest sucks balls. Now we got a build box for the Dragias decks which is great actually and i hope we get more of these for the other boss monsters of the protagonists.
And let's not forget they halved the gems, if you look the leaks you'll see what i mean.
In other words too many wrong decisions made by Konami since the beginning, tried to ammend them but continues to fucked it up as usual.

If rush had its own currency, people would stop playing, because konami would not give enough currency for both formats in 1 event, which would make the life of f2p even worse, not being able to build neither speed or rush decks because theres less gems of each format per month.
And yes, saying that konami wouldnt give less gems is wish Full thinking, they would totally halve in order to give half speed and half rush.

i dont think rush duel is doing as badly on the game as you claim, especially since people usually wait for a sale before buying packs and not use the standard overly expensive ones that im pretty sure nobody touches,

As someone who wanted to try Rush Duel before it getting released into Duel Links, I didn't wanted it to be added to Duel Links. And I hoped, it would own game after hearding leaks and year or so before there was leaks about master rule in DL but master rule wasn't added to DL as was released as own game but of course using the same engine. So I hoped it would be the same situation for RD.
But then Konami annouced it will be in DL, which made it a little bit wattered down - lowered life points and lowered deck size. But of course at the same time adding skills.
Still I enjoy RD in DL. But it probably would be better as seperate game. But then there people claiming that Konami didn't want to have another failed project after Cross Duel. Which could be somewhat true, but Cross Duel failed because of Konami own fault.
Cross Duel was already way too greedy, more then DL, or so I heard. It wasn't a new format just in a west, it was a new format worldwide. RD was established in Asia (maybe just in Japan), so it would be new format just in West. And it released only on mobile device. Ok DL started on mobile devices but it latter was relased on PC. Because CD didn't support my previous phone, I could try it only at the end of it's services.
Like Konami would haved planned to do the same things for RD game which they were doing for the failed game, instead of planning to do the same things what they are doing to MD? They couldn't learn from MD success to apply some stuff from it to RD game?

I think that it isn't doing well in the West simply because the main people in the West who play card games aren't Rush Duel's target demographic. That is to say, the game is obviously meant primarily to be a really simple game for kids who aren't focusing as heavily on optimization and competitive viability as what the average Western TCG player is more focused on.
Lack of other Extra Deck mechanics is in my opinion the result of wanting the game to have the same feature creep of the mainline series. On top of Konami just favoring Fusion significantly more than every other mechanics. A lot of Rush Duel's design is, for better or worse, far more streamlined. For instance the game currently has no Quick-Play Spells or Counter Traps because in essence both of those are just "Normal Traps but better." The construction of the game is a lot more deliberate and a huge aim of it is, from what I can tell, to keep the game simple and with a restrained power creep.
I think that if Rush was given the same amount of attention in the West as it got in Japan (including paper releases) that it certainly would be better received but the overall Yugioh IP just isn't as strong in the West as it is in Japan. In Japan all of the anime series have a degree of popularity that kept the IP relevant to people across the years while in the West the only one with major sticking power is DM (you could argue GX and MAYBE 5D's). The average audience for Yu-Gi-Oh in the west think DM and a style of gameplay similar to Goat Format (though Goat was during GX) and anything that is sufficiently distanced from those are facing an uphill battle among casual audiences. Heck, Konami of America KNOWS this with stuff like rebranding the anime packed themed around WATER monsters that had Nasch as the cover character in Japanese to feature Mako in the US, because "one of the main characters and the primary rival from Zexal" is less relevant in the West than "a minor character who appeared twice in DM."

    • @DuwoYGO
      @DuwoYGO  5 месяцев назад +2

A lot of negative feedback concerning modern yugioh is excessive complexity and lack of "back and forth gameplay" which is what they tried to address with rush duel, so I disagree with the "target demo" point in that specific instance. Rush duel also looks to highlight DM/GX by featuring iconic cards from those eras as legend cards.
The anime point is valid although thats mostly because the west doesn't get the anime alongside the product due to having to translate it and god knows what else. VRAINS was a crunchyroll exclusive for a very long time.
If rush was integrated into master duel instead of duel links i believe the game would be much more alive right now.

@@DuwoYGO I highly doubt Rush Duel would be better in Master Duel, since you wouldn’t have the anime factor. In Duel Links you have the storyline of the anime to introduce the characters and the different strategies and summoning mechanics like Maximum summon. What I think you mean is the Master Duel system, in which you can craft cards, is not that pay to win and has a deeper card pool.

  • @TheEmperorGulcasa

I actually think a lot of those gripes are kind of mitigated at this point. The legends cards are swingy, but there are ways to play around most. Back row removal isn’t too inaccessible so you have a decent chance to clear away widespread before going in. Atk negation like the new negate attack are now ways to halt a maximum otk. The atk drain Harpie card also has shelved to not be run over by just being a massive atk drain. Maximums also have an inherent push pull. All the maximums besides harpies are just a pile of bricks meaning their decks are quite inconsistent. Harpie, meanwhile, is heavily encouraged to play out their harpies and lacks multiple copies of the side pieces so a Harpie maximum is the rarest thing to get sacked by. I’ve been able to play around getting a surprise maximum before and I’ve been able to pinch hit a maximum comeback, so I haven’t reminded them too much except that the mecha one is very otk focused. Also drawing all normal monsters is an unfortunate brick state, but little different to totally bricking out in regular yugioh or drawing all lands in magic. It happens on occasion but it’s not frequent enough to be unplayable. Some decks if anything have little answer to just being set 3 walled which is very aalwkward.

Also, people were too hard on the sevens anime, to the point that they completely ignored that even in the sub it was a comedy, and also legit asked for 11-12 year olds to be put into life ending situations, that worked with the other seasons because everyone was like, 16-18 or even older. Yuga and his friends legit are 12. They are in elementary school, i dont know why people want to see elementary school kids nearly get game ended, but thats americans for you. Funnily enough, this was only a problem in the west.

Saw a dude say you could get to King of games eaisly if you just keep throwing monsters into defense position and never attack.... When legit with how rush duels work, youll deck out first doing that, and that comment got a lot of likes.

Good video! I think we can all clearly see that Konami is in its test faze with rush duels in the west. If the west enjoys the game and Konami makes money THEN rush duels will gain much more money invested into it in the west. I hope rush duels does well in the west because I personally find the traditional yugioh format to be a hot mess that is not welcoming for new players

@@DuwoYGO From what I have heard when legend cards were limited to just 1 legend card in general, most of the legend cards weren't used. Maybe mostly Monster legend cards where used or maybe some legend trap cards or whatever legend card which was powerful at the time.

One of the main complaint than duel link player have with rush duel is the box itself delaying the main format and also require gems .
Something that i really don't like with rush duel is both the "i draw 5 cards each turn" that basically make you vomit your entire hand in the board each turn and the lack of interaction with your opponent which would prevent you to getting snowball. Your opponent can be in an advantage which you can never recover from. You can also add dumbass skill not once per duel.

i loved rush duels until they added maximum summons because suddenly i have to run a bunch of semi bricky cards that i dont want to play until ive got all of them since that will probably win me the game. i too played harpies because it was cheaper as they were given for free in an event and also harpie is an archetype i genuinely like and its nice to see it shine for once. I just ground i in fact did not pay any money for any of my rush decks which may have helped by experience somewhat. i agree completely with the bad state max monsters put teh game in tho it was quite decent before them imo but i uninstalled duel links when they added that cuz i was pm only playing rush n it stopped being fun when they got added

@@DuwoYGO what I'm trying to say is if I have right harpie or left harpie in hand I didn't want to play it because I want the maximum summon so i can win. at least when i was playing, you could only have 1 of each so its taking away from my 5 cards a turn hand until i manage to draw all of them and it often felt like it really slowed me down, i don't think i once ever actually managed to get it out so i might as well just have played none maximum monsters and just hoped my opponent didn't get there's before i won. if i drew a left or right harpie but no other pieces i was essentially drawing less cards a turn because i had to hold on to a card that did nothing for me, it's the exodia problem, I don't want any of them unless I have all of them. Gonna have to disagree with Xyzs since that would be a little too generic for how much summoning you can pull off for something like Rank 4 toolboxing
Maybe you can do Synchro if its just the "specific material" monsters (or low end generics) since needing to open Tuners + appropriate levels would even out with the ability to constantly Normal Summon.
That said, I think Rush in DL has improved rather gradually since its introduction. Negate Attack and Buffered Slime make surviving getting Maximum'd on a lot easier, and there's plenty of deck variety as far as competition goes. Even stuff like Noodle Ninja have secondary wincons in just burning the opponent to death on top of their usual pressure tactics, and turtling has been weakened with piercing decks or those with access to attack position changing skills without needing to rely on Dragias to clear sets
Skills also made maximums (who arent harpies) viable compared to the physical game, where the first breed of them mostly flopped, which is something thats curiously not talked about as often
