The Seoul Experience: Korea Market Hunt 🇰🇷

  • ■ KOREA, SEOUL: It's been a year since I visited a country I've never been to before so I figured I couldn't end the year without going somewhere new. I truly love going to countries I know are awesome over and over again. But going somewhere entirely new where the language, culture, food and architecture is fresh is always an adventure.
That's the backdrop for why I decided to visit South Korea. What ultimately sealed the deal for me was the climate which is similar to Northern Europe. I hate leaving Europe during winters as there's nothing better than fresh ice cold air and snow covered city landscapes.
South Korea also have that. When I landed it was -4. As usual I didn't prepare much other than a hotel. Browsing Booking.com I came a couple of days before departure I came across a boutique hotel name L'Escape Hotel boasting a French renaissance decor throughout the premises. This I had to see and experience for myself.
A hotel though is usually just the icing on the cake. What makes a country cool is the people who reside there. So out I went on a street food hunt and shopping spree to figure out what Seoul, the capital of Korea, is truly like.

Harald thanks for the tour of Seoul. While serving in the U.S. Army I was stationed in Korea in 1970 and 1978. Seoul was such an interesting place then. It looks fabulous now. I found the Korean people to be super friendly and they will share with you food and drinks etc. even if they are dirt poor. Both tours I was in the countryside and it was very beautiful and calming. I still eat kimchi today and have a favorite Korean restaurant in Daleville, Alabama USA. Very authentic. More videos pleeeeaase!!!

18:30 ‘Boong-eo Bbang’ fish-shaped pancake filled with sweet red bean paste, originally invented in Japan named ‘taiyaki’
21:00 fishcake called ‘Eo-muk’ or ‘Odeng’
27:37 called ‘Nok-Doo Jeon’ fried pancake made up of mung bean, meat and mung bean sprout. Kinda very traditional thing in KR.
30:10 kinda Expensive as it is on the street, but if it’s real fur it would be right price.
33:20 Chestnuts. famous ‘good old times’ snack of wintertime.
34:40 called ‘Han-gwa’ snack made up of rice and rice syrup, Has hundreds years of tradition.
37:15 you could use ‘An-nyeong’ either you say hello or good bye. Koreans often use ‘An-nyeong Haseyo’, honorific form towards elders.

Harald, I can recommend going for a hike on one of the mountains surrounding Seoul. It's an amazing combination to be in a huge metropolis, but also being so close to nature. Truly stunning views. Try Achasan (아차산) or Gwanaksan (관악산).

I also recommend Jangsan (장산) in Busan, my favorite city in the world. Ideally you’d want to visit in a warmer season, and the same applies to Jeju. If you’re a fan of history, you should go to Jeonju, regardless of the season. Another historic city is Gyeongju, which is also cool, but if I had to pick just one historical city, I’d choose Jeonju.

Hongdae: This energetic district near Hongik University is a hub for art, music, and nightlife. Live music spills from cafes and clubs, street performers entertain crowds, and trendy shops line the narrow streets. It's a dynamic atmosphere that buzzes with youthful energy.
Gangnam: Known for its upscale boutiques and flashy nightlife, Gangnam also has pockets of cool cafes and restaurants popular with young adults. Apgujeong-dong, with its trendy Garosu-gil street, is a popular hangout for trendsetters.
Itaewon: This international district is known for its diverse restaurants and bars, attracting both locals and expats. Itaewon's multicultural atmosphere and late-night energy make it a favorite for those seeking a lively scene.
Hapjeong: This up-and-coming district boasts a mix of independent shops, cafes, and art galleries, attracting a creative crowd. Its laid-back vibes and unique offerings make it a popular spot for young people looking for something different.

Unexpected but exciting to see you in my country of residence!
The filling of the first food you had (bungeobbang/붕어빵) you had was red bean paste. It's quite a popular flavour in Korea, there are a variety of pastries and even ice cream. I personally prefer custard filling bungeobbang.
Also as you might have seen, Korean people don't like to haggle much. You can generally get the best prices at metro malls in my experience.
Further, a few suggestions from someone who has lived in Korea for 4 years and travelled every province:
    - Majang Meat Market, Seoul: since you seem to not be a connoisseur of seafood, you should try Korea's biggest meat market mainly known for hanu beef (basically Korean wagyu), it also has a 80s/90s flair
    - Seodaemun Prison, Seoul: prison built under Japanese colonial regime to detain independence activist, later used to detain democracy fighters by Korean dictatorship, now it's a memorial hall/museum where you can learn about the more sinister side of 20st century Korean history
    - Andong City: small city in the mountains, you can learn how to distill soju there, also famous for jjimdak (braised chicken), they have a folk village too but I haven't visited so idk if it is overly touristic or authentic, they have a smaller old village too that was relocated due to a dam being built but nobody lives there as far as I know
    - Gyejoksan, Daejeon: literally barefoot mountain, red clay hiking trail that you are supposed to climb barefoot, appearantly good for health but might be too cold now; in Daejeon there is also a public hot spring in the middle of the city (Yusong Hot Springs Public Foot Bath) which would be great spot to relax and try chatting up the elderly. generally Daejeon is underrated in my opinion, but has a reputation as 'no fun city' among Koreans
    - depending on how long you stay you could also try going to some winter festival in some mountain town, I'd recommend Hwacheon. mainly people go for ice fishing, you can try barehands fishing there too or just ride a sleigh or something, if you go on the right day you can also see a lot of soldiers, since it is close to the DMZ and they get to do stuff for free so a lot come on their off day, plus you can find some Korean Army store there
Anyways looking forward to more videos from Korea

Good to see our Hero take in some of the finer things the world has on offer. Well deserved! And Happy Festivus for the Rest of Us! The reindeer costume would be too big for my dog, Loonie. But she'd curl up and sleep in that hat. LOL! (I may be mistaken, but I think the gentleman said it was Mink. Definitely not Leopard. No worries there my friend. )
