  • Today, we're continuing a multi-video journey on which we will be building historically accurate and authentic city designs in Manor lords, a highly anticipated city-building game! I will explain how the game works as I play and explain some historical details as we go!
    Manor Lords on Steam: store.steampow...
Manor Lords is a strategy game that allows you to experience the life of a medieval lord. Grow your starting village into a bustling city, manage resources and production chains, and expand your lands through conquest.
Inspired by the art and architecture of late 14th century Franconia, Manor Lords prioritizes historical accuracy wherever possible, using it to inform gameplay mechanics and visuals alike. Common medieval tropes are avoided in favor of historical accuracy, in order to make the world feel more authentic, colorful, and believable.

I think yellow field (Gelbfeld) or yellow field village (Gelbfelddorf) would be awesome, due to the tavern being a large part of the town. The town is surrounded by fields of wheat to make the beer in the taverns. Please excuse my German, I do not speak the language.

How about "Radau" for the German village, which means "Radau-Caseritz" for the area?
The place for it was carved from the forest, which is where the first part comes from - prefix Rade- is used for a "clearing" in the woods (cf. English rod, rode, royde), suffix -au is Slavic one (from Slavic -ov, -ów, used by Polabian Slavs and West Slavs in general to refer to a village or place, common in German village names in areas that used to be Slavic). Radau was built mostly by Slavic villagers/workers from Caseritz and Germans were always telling them to go work on the "wood clearing" (go cut down trees) and they added their suffix to it to label the place amongst themselves "Yeah, I have to go to Radeau/ Radau today."... and maybe it stuck?

    • @jarlnils435

Modern German has the word "Radau" (means noise pollution, for example a loud party could be "Radau" to your not invited neighbours).
Although it seems the word did not exist back in 1400.

    • @jonasferenc6847
      @jonasferenc6847 6 месяцев назад +2

@@jarlnils435 As a suffix it can be "-roth, -rath, -rode, -reuth, or -rade ". As a prefix, it is supposedly "Rade-". For example in Radebeul, Radevormwald.

@@jonasferenc6847 most likely some eastern or southern dialects, which I do not speak. Modern standart high german, as well as the low german language and all it's dialects have it spoken as -rode or Rode- or Roden-/Rhoden-.
But low german is something which most people do not consider. Some think that it is a dialect of the german language. They are wrong. Because it is it's own.
For example, Village names on low german translated into high german and english.
Astenbeck - Schneller Bach - quick creek
Blakeborn - Schwarze Quelle - black spring (of a creek)
Lutter - Plätscherbach - (I don't know how to translate Plätschern into english, perhaps bubbly creek)
      Bremen - Rand - Rim
      Petersenwierde - Petersohns Weide - Peterson's pasture.

Great playthrough, great history lesson! When you talk about how people were gradually deprived of freedom, it reminded me of how (if I remember correctly) wool became extremely profitable in the 16th century, which in turn led to peasants being brutally driven off common land. Eventually, this development led to the creation of the modern wage laborer. And here we are now.

38:05 This “erosion of rights” is a constant throughout history. It is based on the material interests of the owner class (the lord) and the working class (the peasant). This contradiction within Feudalism is what drove medieval history and led to its eventual collapse.
This allowed for the rise of Capitalism (with its inherent contradictions) in its place.
The setting of Manor Lords is so interesting to me because it is set at the beginning stages of this qualitative change in society. You can already discern elements of the new system within the old. Fascinating!

I really love the gameplay and can't wait to get my hands on Manor Lords myself, but more than that thank you for giving the context that you do for what you are doing, it really is quite fascinating and I love your passion for the topic!

@OneProudBavarian, are you able to report the three-family bug preventing migration to @LordsManor for bug fixing (assuming he's not already aware).

    Very nice and interesting video!
And once again, history is led by class struggle. Very educational to hear the expansion of German settlements and Slavic villages. And the encroachment of the lords authority

The granary mispronunciation as "grainary" is a mistake I've heard native English speakers make, so don't worry too much about it. Great series so far. Loving the historical take.

I love that despite the dev saying visit mode is an experimental bonus feature and the game should be played in bird’s-eye view, the game’s details still hold up with how often you’re using it. Ignoring the mystery oven…

Been watching this whole series, your historical insights and slower approach to the gameplay are very refreshing compared to some more... eccentric, clickbaity creators.
Would be awesome to see a couple more historical village layouts, and perhaps some suggestions for layouts for us peasants once the game releases!

If you want to be able to focus on esthetics without as much stress you could make an extra log/plank camp and a row of houses who’s whole job is to make war bows then the export them for infinite money. This would make it easier to build out villages. Basically turns free wood into infinite money! Just a suggestion before it gets patched.
