You all have heard about the Chinese Mafia - a crime syndicate with tens of thousands of gang members. It is believed that they are based in Hong Kong, deal with all sectors of the criminal world, and in this city have a power comparable to that of official leaders. This syndicate is called Triads.
In a nutshell, that's all you can find about the Triads in most sources on the internet. I want to correct that. And today we're going to dive deeper into history than we ever have on this channel, because the Triads are over a thousand years old.

Ng Sik-Ho was not actually that big of a shot caller. But he became the most well-known after the Ray Lui movie "To Be Number One", and how his character showed up in various other movies set in that time period.
Ng Chun Kwun, or Fat Kwun, was the biggest kingpin in Hong Kong after the Ma's fled to Taiwan. Kwun was a Wo On Lok boss, and also someone of Teochew descent, so he held sway in the Teochew faction of the underworld. At the time, most of the people in the drug trade were of Teochew/Hoklo descent. Kwun was the main distributor for all of Kowloon; Sik-Ho was one of many wholesalers working for Kwun.
Kwun also ran the now-defunct Cilaxy Night Club (仙樂斯) in Tsim Sha Tsui, where his main office was. One of his bodyguards back then was 70s-80s martial art action star Michael Chan Wai Man, who was a former prison officer, cop, and most notably a 14K "dai-lo".

As someone who is from Southeast Asia, especially from Malaysia, I can give you some in depth details about the local Chinese triads.
You see, Malaysian Chinese triads can be divided into two types, groups with no sub-groups and groups that have sub-groups.
Groups with sub-groups such as 18 (一八) or 21 (二一) are usually made out of Indians and Chinese, some ranks of such groups can be different from one another, but usually each towns or cities where the groups are present would have a different leader of ethnicity. Some cities you may have Indians becoming the leaders, while the others are Chinese. They are usually a lose network, but are united under the same banner of their names. Instead of saying you're from that group, members sometimes usually say what city or district they are from, and then the name. Example like this "That guy is from Segamat *insert name of group*".
Groups with no sub-groups are usually found in certain regions of Malaysia, like Sio Sam Ong which is based in the state Pulau Pinang/Peneng Island. The majority membership would be obviously Chinese, though there are some Indian minority who became high-rankers. They aren't spread across the country, only residing in their respective regions.

Evening from the U.K, have always been interested in History, I like how you explained from the past , I have watched so many off these films and drama's, but in reality in all Countries we've got good and bad people, mostly the money comes from the top and we've never knows who's dealing it, but they did the actions out there in front and not behind closed doors etc.
