He's a songwriter's bass player; perfect notes, tones, nothing wasted or missed. From Allan Holdsworth to James Taylor, like Bob Babbitt, his book of work shows that it's all about the song.
What a terrific thing - I first heard Jimmy on record in the mid-80s with the Wayne Johnson Trio and Flim & The BBs, later saw him a couple of times in the UK with James Taylor. I've never heard him speak before but this confirms what I already suspected - that he's as genuinely humble as he is talented. The world needs more people like him!
I find it strange that Jimmy Johnson is not widely recognized for what he is, the Greatest Bass Player in the world, because he is that hands down, nobody else conveys that kind of passion in a Bass Solo. There is no formula for the way he puts notes together, it's just the way he plays and ALL his solos sound different yet you can tell they came out of the same mind. If you don't believe me, or can't hear it for yourself then listen to Allan Holdsworth who said "To Me he's the Greatest Bass Player in the world" Then listen to his incredible passionate groves and solos to numerous to mention. BUT start with Jimmy's solo on Holdsworth "Secrets" album and the cut "54 Duncan Terrace". Jaco is maybe the Champion of Bass, but Jimmy Johnson is at that level of Greatness, and in musical circles, among the worlds Legendary Greatest musicians HE IS recognized as the Best there is.
Jimmy Johnson, rock solid for years. "Let's hear it for the Bass player! No wait, wait, wait...what am I thinking...go back to the shadows, stay in the pocket, where it's nice and cozy". Very happy for this regular guy.
I think it's hysterical (to me anyway) that Jimmy would say that he isn't in the same league... This guy is a TOP shelf bassist. Tone, feel, melodic, supportive... I mean he's everything that I have ever wanted to be as a bassist. Flim and The BB's project was SILLY good! From J.T. (I mean, seriously, I would NOT have to take Lee Sklar's place-another one of my go to bassists) to Allan Holdsworth!! Monster player, sweet person, modest, and tone to the bone! Congrats brother! (Don't know if JJ remembers but my son Nick McCagg tech'd for him at an Allan H clinic at Guitar Factory in Buffalo NY-Orchard Park actually. It was a "stop my heart" moment for Nick as he's been listening to Jimmy since THE WOMB!!!
Jimmy's brilliance, skills, and versatility as a bassist are surpassed only by his humility!!!!! He pioneered using the 5-string bass as did Alembic in building it!
What we do IS important. For us as well as the crowd. We'll get to do it again someday and it will sure be sweet! Until then hang in there, keep plucking, humming, strumming, and drumming. Stay safe my friends!
Jimmy Johnson is the BEST bass player on the planet and the most humble

Because of his work with Allan Holdsworth, Jimmy is my favorite bassist.
From one low-guy to a long time friend and compatriot -- Congrats and much respect to a great, groovin' bassist.
