I believe that blue star flag back in the day had blue, silver and gold stars. The silver star was for any service member that was wounded in action. I remember my mom saying that when she was little she remembered seeing one of these flags on a house with 4 gold stars and one silver one. I could not imagine the sorrow of that family. Truly the greatest generation in this countries history.
That was truly amazing!! They would have to throw me out of there. As a just turned 70 year old whose father survived the Pacific theater, I really appreciate this, and frankly, all of your videos. Easily my favorite history channel on youtube, or anywhere else. Entertaining, thoughtful, educational, well produced and balanced, reasonable discourse on history. Non judgmental. I guess I should go to your patreon page. You deserve it, thanks.
God bless these folks for paying homage to the courageous men and women of this era, and bless you for bringing us all along for the trip down memory lane. If you like this, you will love the Warhawk Air Museum in Nampa, ID! If you are ever in the Boise area, please stop in and ask any of the volunteers for a tour. It is amazing!
After your first airing, I included this stop on my trip to MO and gathered up photos of my Dad and FIL, made a very emotional stop there, met Chaz, Her and her staff we awesome, spent some time with us and had a GREAT meal. I’m so thankful I could honor my DAD and FIL. Awesome, AWESOME place!!!!!
My uncles served in WW II and they all came back and shared their experiences with me, some of the most odd stories you could hear. I was also privileged to work with many veterans in my every day working career. One that stands out was a B-29 tail gunner. Those men never said anything about being involved in the war unless you asked them. A paratrooper association inducted my brother and me as honorary members for helping them. During that time, we also met a gentleman from Holland, that had been in the resistance and had been at Arnhem and he autographed my book, "A Bridge to Far." A great, great time!
My father in law's portrait was hidden by the second light shade you panned to; he was trained by the Army Air Corps to be the left-seat driver of the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, and was on the train in Montana, en route to take a liberty ship to the islands we had purchased with so much Marine, Sailor, and Airman blood, for the great invasion--and Japan finally had their epiphanies which got them to surrender. Thank you for featuring Chaz and her wonderful, *wonderful* restaurant. We don't get to visit very often, as we live too far away. But I am grateful for her love of the veterans and active duty.
Unique doesn't even begin to describe that cafe, the lady owner was sweet and sincere and it is obvious they truly care for their customers. Extraordinary, truly enjoyed this. And the food looked delicious!
I know you get a ton of comments that this is just one of many of your grateful fans. I must say this video touched my heart! I love that this place still honors our WWII vets in a very real and tangible way. I love that it exists. I love that you brought it to us so that we will not forget that these men and women and their families were real flesh and blood hero’s who really did save the world!!!
That places is awesome. I was crewing Fifi (one of the world's only two flying B29s) just down the road in Branson when our PX guy spotted the sign for this place on his drive in. We had to go, and it ended up being opening night!
My father was a member of America's greatest generation. He was on a Mine Sweeper in the Pacific arena clearing the way for the American fleet. What a wonderful way to pay respect to our WWII vets. God Bless them all!
Oh wow! I have another video on the channel where I go through the only surviving minesweeper from WWII. You might enjoy it if you haven't seen it already.
What an amazing place, my dad would love this. These people have went out of their way to celebrate our heroes, and share the love in what they do. Our vets of that era are dwindling down, dad died in 2012 at age 91. Thank you for the video.
My husband was a Viet Nam vet and his father was a WW II vet . Their pictures are side by side in their uniforms in Cafe B-29 .My husband was a Marine his father was in the Army. It was a great honor to have them with all the other Vets in this Cafe Museum.
My Father was a WWII US Marine. Why I joined the Marines at 17 and served for 10 years Active duty. Got out went to college, joined the Air Force 16.5 years later and retired 37 years to the day I 1st Enlisted.
Enjoyed this History lesson. Made me think of my Dad. He served state side at Roswell Army Air Corps Base (as it was called before Air Force) during WWII before all the UFO stuff. He served on a ground crew that would service damaged B-17's and other planes that needed repair. He was discharged 1945. I still have his uniform and other items from that period of his life.
Our daughter and grandsons live about 90 miles north of there. Definitely going next time we’re out there visiting. With The Old Breed is an amazing book too.👍🏻
“With the Old Breed” was part of the inspiration for “The Pacific” series. It’s the Marine version of “Band of Brothers”. Eugene Sledge and SNAFU are two of the main characters.
At 4:10, you mentioned the Wichita Beacon, but alongside it is the front page from the Hutchinson Herald announcing the Pearl Harbor attack. This another Kansas Newspaper, out of Hutchinson, KS. Wichita was home to a several companies who built a lot of aircraft for the war effort of WWII. In fact, they still do. You might enjoy doing a series of episodes about the aviation history of Wichita. Wichita was my home from 1985 thru 1990, and I still head back to see friends there. Speaking of Hutchinson, take a gander of the Cosmosphere there. It houses the largest collection of space artifacts in the world, aside from the Smithsonian Institution. The original Apollo 13 command module is on display, as well as Gus Grissom’s Liberty Bell 7 capsule (which was salvaged and restored by the Cosmosphere). Their SpaceWorks division even created the mock-up Apollo13 capsule used in Tom Hanks’ “Apollo 13” move. Boss, I hope that you’ll put the Cosmosphere in Hutch on your “Must-Visit” list. You won’t be disappointed. I live in Topeka, which isn’t terribly far away. I go back to the Cosmosphere yearly, so if you’d like to get somebody like me to give you a tour, I’ll join you there. www.cosmo.org
HEY, JD Wow thank you so much for doing this kind of Vidoe.. There is not enough RUclips channels that give our veterans of all the wars first world war, world war II, Korea, Vietnam, desert Storm, and Afghanistan all these veterans deserve better then we have done so far I'm so saddened by this We should be doing more to thank them for their service and sacrifice that they have given for this country so thank you for this video take care be safe and God bless ps. thank you Chaz from Cafe B-29
You my friend have the coolest job. What an amazing diner with all the real cool relics. I am blown away by that neat diner. Thank you so much for sharing an amazing place. And god bless all our veterans. God bless Dave blackburn
JD, thanks for posting this video me and my son just ate at Cafe B-29 and the place is awesome. Great food, great atmosphere, really cool pictures and and other artifacts on the walls this place is a must go for anyone that wants great food and loves military history.
I loved this video. I enjoy reading as much as I can about WWII. Of Course, I had my father and many uncles fighting for us in every branch of the service. My mom also worked at the Bell Bomber Plant in Marietta Ga which was built exclusively for the B-29's. The area was first the Naval Air Station which opened in 1941 and an Air Force base also opened in1941 (as Rickenbacker Field). My mom was a Rosie the Riveter whose primary job was putting the windows in the cockpits of the B-29's. After the war, Lockheed took over a good deal building mainly large cargo planes such as the C-130 Hercules and the C-5 Galaxy, and later the F-22 Raptor.
Your videos are top notch production quality and could easily be on a cable tv network series in my opinion. Well done and thank you for bringing history alive for us all.
What an awesome cafe'. I think that is says it all with that one saying Veteran another name for hero. Being a veteran and a person that loves history can appreciate this cafe that pay homage to the sacrifices to wars gone by. Thank you for going to Missouri to see this great cafe. And thank you again for your service to our country sir. take care
Preserving history while serving sustenance. That's a win-win in my book. * We didn't have CVC helmet/headsets like the one at 9:13 in '67. Pretty sure I wasn't issued one until maybe '72 at the earliest.
Awesome job yet again, JD! One of the very best ways to learn history is to not only seek and listen to our distinguished Veterans, but also immerse yourself in different locations throughout the world. Nothing brings the Battle of Okinawa to life more than exploring the caves near Naha and personally examining the bullet holes in Shuri Castle. Safe travels.
@@TheHistoryUnderground Understand that... it's a terribly long flight with really no easy way to get there. Maybe since the great and powerful Uncle Joe is in office, COVID will miraculously disappear? Seriously, it would be great if we could simply get back to normal! I am so over this! Luckily, we have so much here in America to see and do, I don't feel like I'm missing too much by not being able to head anywhere else at this time. We are truly Blessed to have such a wonderful Nation with our rich history and diversity- it would take a lifetime just to see and experience it all!
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Not that far from Kansas City MO. I feel a road trip in my near future. Too bad my Dad,, WWII Navy- Pacific Theatre, is no longer alive. He would have loved to visit this restaurant.
I was actually fortunate enough recently where I got to go to the remnants of Sugar Loaf Hill here in Okinawa and while the Okinawans really have for the most part tried to hide what happened during the war you can still walk up Sugar Loaf Hill. It such a moving experience because while there is not much there, you can still get the idea from looking down from the hill what it must have been like for the Americans to try to capture it. You can see for several miles all around Naha.
Oh My Gosh!! That is THE COOLEST Diner I have EVER Seen in My Entire Life!! I don’t know if it’s even possible, But Someday, I’ve Gotta Visit that place! Anyways, Thanks for sharing it JD, Many Blessings to you, your family, and your team and Keep up the Great Work!!
Thank you for sharing this with me because having Uncles serving in the military during WWII I would love to see this place ! Take care , stay safe and healthy with whatever you maybe doing next ! Doing well here in Kansas .
My hero neighbor’s picture is on that wall. Their food is absolutely delicious. As always, wonderful and informative video. Have you been to Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield?
Finally made it back to the area on vacation and was able to eat at the cafe. Let’s just say it was a very good experience, excellent food, friendly employees and an incredible atmosphere. Will definitely make a return visit on the next trip. Thanks for making this video and for the always great content.
To see all the photos and to realize in all the faces it means lives, dreams, tragedies and history. We owe a debt beyond measure to our services members.
I have to stop here, I'm planning to visit my husband's family later this year that live in Missouri. My grandfather was in WWII and landed at Normandy on D-Day, along with several other well-known battles. I know at one point he was being stationed close to 506th {Easy company}. I've been always had a deep respect and fascination for history around this time. Thank you so much for stopping and showing this to your viewers.
Great video. When I start travelling again and we head to Branson, I am going to stop there. I have been to Lambert's in Ozark, but I will check out the Cafe B-29.
Once again, thanks for an awesome video. You now have me wanting to visit the central U.S. I must report that this week I saved an old trunk going to the dump. Inside it was a time capsule that contained WAVES uniforms, women's dresses from the 1940s, Army uniforms from WWII and Vietnam with medals etc., and a sun bonnet sewn by a pioneer. It was worth the fight I went through to open it and inspect the contents before it was thrown out.
That place is so cool. My Dad (a WWII Veteran) would have loved that place. I want to thank you for taking us along. Now I know what I should do with my old 40 year old (MP) helmet liner. It's been sitting and collecting dust in the garage for many many years, and now I know what to do with it. It's going to be a hanging lamp shade. Bravo!!! Thanks again and stay safe.
Hi JD. Glad the “Women pilots” were mentioned. My classmate’s mother was a WASP who kept a scrapbook. Last June he told his mothers story over a few days. I can connect when you’re back from Poland. Enough content for several videos. And more. Much more.
Her enthusiasm for the history and the folks who lived it is uplifting. She represents the men and women of yesterday with respect and honor. Cant wait to eat at Cafe B 29
What an amazing place and wonderful tribute to the veterans. The only thing I would change is the music playing in the background. I love the Grease soundtrack but it seems out of place.
What an amazing place! All those signatures of hero’s! Humbling stories shared with the dear woman that started this in honor of her granddad. Puts tears in my eyes. God Bless them. Thank you for sharing!!!!
We live 2 hours from there. My husband and and I are definitely stopping there next time we go to Springfield! What an amazing diner. Thank you for sharing!
I have lunch here about every other week for the last few years. Several friends and I have donated pictures and uniforms for the walls. All of the staff are incredibly awesome.
Loved it! Called my brother in Kentucky and told him about it. He deals in WW2 flight gear. I live 1 mile north of Doc's new hanger. Doc was flying over my house today. Just one small issue. Doc is NOT the only B29 flying. B29 FIFI has been flying for years. These are the only 2 flying. We built a fantastic hanger and education center for Doc--all by donations, about $7,000,000 I think. Doc is unbelievable!
Wow that's all I can say is wow what a beautiful way to say thank you to all the men and women who served!!! Thank you for sharing this and I definitely will stop by there if and when I am in that area.
I hope one day i get to see this history we only see on u tube. Thank you for taking us with you. You do any amazing job of keeping this history alive God Bless you 🙏💓
How fun. I assume the food is good. 😜 I’m surprised that so many vets freely talk about their experiences. My grandfather really never talked about his experience the war. Being in Poland from the second the war started, he saw lots of crazy stuff.
Wow! Great job! My mother was a W.A.C. stationed in France. Seeing the W.A.C. uniform was especially nostalgic. The bronze star was another. My uncle passed away in 1998 and we got his military records and found out he had won two bronze stars in Europe and never told anyone. They were definitely a different breed in a good way. Thanks and be safe.
Next time you're in ATL check out 57th Fighter Squadron. It's part bomb shelter part officer's club and the food is amazing. Sunday brunch is the best option.
Looks like a very cool place! Another not sure if it's the same as it used to be is the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant. There are a few around the country now. The one in LA had memorabilia from WW 1 throughout in a French chateau type building. Again, thank you for sharing!!
Fantastic video and what a great place the gas mask was epic and well everything in this diner was just amazing and this video was just insane enjoyed it so much and much love from all the way from England 🏴 🏴
That place looks amazing. When/If I'm in MO I've got to stop by. There's a place here in Lexington SC that's similar, it's called 'Flight Deck'. Tons of memorabilia on the walls and ceiling, great food too. If you're passing through SC exploring the history here, be sure to stop by there.
The story that the nice owner told of the veteran telling her with his head held low, about how bad they treated the lady pilots seemed to stick with me. Thank God we get wiser as we age! ...oh, and I want to eat there! My kind of place!
That was awesome JD and you are one lucky baxxxxd. It looks a fascinating diner and the food looked great too. What an amazing tribute to our veterans. Hope you got home safe just been watching Ozarks on Netflix very dark drama. Also isn't there Andy Williams Moon River theatre and a Titanic museum in Branson Missouri. Just great to see an open diner. In the UK we still have to wait a month to reopening flaming Covid. Thanks so much for your videos.

My dad was in WWII and the Korean Conflict. I would love to go and see this place.
What a great place! What great stories they have! Yet another place to visit. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! Sounds like you saved a lot more than a old truck. Great find!
Oh wow! That is amazing. Thank you for saving that. I'm a big collector of WWII items and hate those horror stories of things that went to the dump.
I love this! I love WWII history, and the food looks delicious! Thank you for sharing with us! Safe travels!
Oh man. I wish there was a way that you could smell this video.
Great place! I recommend the Monte Cristo sandwich.
What an amazing place and wonderful tribute to the veterans. The only thing I would change is the music playing in the background. I love the Grease soundtrack but it seems out of place.
Definitely needs 40's swing music! How'd they miss that? Maybe they play it when the vets stop in?
@@billd2635 I was thinking the same thing. 40's swing
Definitely a cool place.
What an amazing place! All those signatures of hero’s! Humbling stories shared with the dear woman that started this in honor of her granddad. Puts tears in my eyes. God Bless them. Thank you for sharing!!!!
Thanks!
What an amazing place! Thanks for taking us there!
Oh man! You are truly living my American dream visiting places like this!
Eating there felt like something out of a dream.
We live 2 hours from there. My husband and and I are definitely stopping there next time we go to Springfield! What an amazing diner. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I would never leave, just trying to learn all of the stories there.
Agreed!
This is the first Foodie program I ever enjoyed. Heck, I smiled all the way thru it. You could say I ate it up!
I have lunch here about every other week for the last few years. Several friends and I have donated pictures and uniforms for the walls. All of the staff are incredibly awesome.
That is awesome! Tell them that I said hello the next time you are in.
Will do. I live about a mile from the restaurant.
I can't believe how emotionally moved I was by you DINER visit!! Wobderful!! 😃
Thanks!
From France, thank you for this experience, wonderful initiative!
Thanks!
What an incredible place. I would have to go there before it opened, so much to see!
Very much so.
We are now making plans to visit this incredible diner !! This video was fantastic!! Thankyou History Underground 🤩🥇🤩
Awesome! You'll love it. Tell them that the ugly guy on RUclips said hello.
😄😆😅 I will just tell them , you said hello .
WoW! What an awesome looking place. As a comment just read, this too is a bucket lister in my book. Great video bud. Thank you.
Wow that's all I can say is wow what a beautiful way to say thank you to all the men and women who served!!! Thank you for sharing this and I definitely will stop by there if and when I am in that area.
Definitely!
I hope one day i get to see this history we only see on u tube. Thank you for taking us with you. You do any amazing job of keeping this history alive God Bless you 🙏💓
Thank you very much!
Thank you for this video. My dad served in WWII and I love this place. The owners stories of her customers are so heartwarming.
How fun. I assume the food is good. 😜 I’m surprised that so many vets freely talk about their experiences. My grandfather really never talked about his experience the war. Being in Poland from the second the war started, he saw lots of crazy stuff.
Holy smokes. The food was awesome.
Oh man , this is awesome . Now I need to go there all the way from Boston . What a find . Thank you .
You should!
History that WE ALL should know.....Well said Ma’am.
Wow!
Sunday brunch is the best option.
that was cool. my dad was a ww2 vet. we lost him last april. 92 years old . best guy ever and my best friend.
So so cool. God bless all our veterans
Thanks!
Looks like a very cool place! Another not sure if it's the same as it used to be is the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant. There are a few around the country now. The one in LA had memorabilia from WW 1 throughout in a French chateau type building. Again, thank you for sharing!!
Amazing place!! That looks absolutely phenomenal!! Thanks for taking us along
Definitely added to my bucket list!! What are the chances you have a Spotify playlist with all the music you use in your vids?
Fantastic video and what a great place the gas mask was epic and well everything in this diner was just amazing and this video was just insane enjoyed it so much and much love from all the way from England 🏴 🏴
👍🏻
You do a fantastic job of showcasing all these places. Thank you keep up the good work.
2 years old and has the decoration of a 50 year old establishment… amazing dedication to details by the friendly owner.
The title of video is correct, I'm from Canada and want to visit and have a meal there. Respect to the WW2 generation.
Probably my favorite restaurant.
What a great video! That would be an awesome place to own! Imagine all the amazing men and women that go through there!
This is so awesome. I would love to go there. So glad you were told to go there
Me too!
The story that the nice owner told of the veteran telling her with his head held low, about how bad they treated the lady pilots seemed to stick with me. Thank God we get wiser as we age! ...oh, and I want to eat there! My kind of place!
Oh man. It's good. I'm almost considering moving to Ozark, MO just to eat there every day.
I would love to go to that diner.
It's great!
Funny story. I actually reached out to the Titanic Museum but they wouldn't let me film.
This is absolutely WONDERFUL!!! Thank you very much!
Glad you like it!
