  • Oh my goodness, spooky Woody came out to play this week! After many months of riding in our dressage saddle, we are finally getting down to buying a jump saddle so we can start jumping again. Today, I take you through the fundamental difference between a jump saddle and a dressage saddle and show you what happened when I tested a jump saddle out for the first time (spoiler: I nearly came out the side door!)

    I'm all about brown track!!!! You deserve a treat... New set of tack!!! Also helps if you use a different bit for jumping it will already be on your bridle 😊

    Well done, Rhi, when Woody was spooked. Like you say, your knowledge of getting to know Woody in the last year has helped greatly and also your confidence in feeling in control 😊 I must say the brown saddle did look good on Woody with the lovely colour saddle pad. I would change to brown if jumping is more what you're going to be competing, although I realise there is the expense!! Maybe a little treat for you and Woody after starting your new job 🥰

    You'll get used to it Rhi, well done. You did so amazing and i'm glad that you didn't rush it, you corrected your back and his before purchases. Also, i've got my first show on monday i'm very excited, its sj/xc.

    I've been riding the same horse at my school yard for the best part of a year, in the same saddle/tack too. Last week had to switch to a different horse, obviously with a different saddle. I went from a GP cut to a jump saddle and that alone was enough for me to struggle finding my balance and stirrup lengths. Kept switching my stirrups up and down a hole and my instructor was like "stop doing that it's not the length its just a different saddle"...so I can imagine going from a dressage to a jump is even worse 😂
    Also I love brown tack, definitely my fave and Woody really suits it too! (I loved that pink piping, such a shame it's not the right fit)...if you can find it in yourself to have mis-matching leathers/bridle for a bit you could get a brown saddle and slowly collect matching tack for it! 😊

    Go for the brown if you have the spare cash as it's gorgeous. But don't forget your energy bills are due to skyrocket soon!!

    I'd stay black! Let's say right before a competition your bridle or girth breaks, you could easily switch it out with your dressage stuff.
    It will also save you money right now although personally I would probably get a second bridle and girth anyways so I didn't have to switch them around all the time

    • @RidingWithRhi
      @RidingWithRhi  2 года назад +2

      That's a very good point about competitions! And yes to swapping things over, that's initially what made me think I may as well get brown if I have to buy twice anyway!

    I’m glad to see you’re taking the time to find a saddle that works for you and Woody. I’d stay with the black tack, it looks lovely in him. I know what you mean about different saddles having a different feel, last year I switched from a dressage saddle that didn’t really fit my horse anymore to a custom AP saddle. My horse is very asymmetrical because he has wonky hips so his whole body has taken on that asymmetry over time (he is almost 21). Although he loved the new saddle right away and could move so much better in it, it took me a good 5-10 rides to get used to it and find it comfortable. Now it fits like a glove and is awesome, but new saddles do tend to take some breaking in.

    That jump saddle is rather beautiful! I’ve always grown up with black tack for everything and now I’ve got my own horse to choose I think I will eventually aim to go down the brown route, the only thing with brown I’ve noticed is lots of shades whereas black is black! But my lad is a bay and I do think horses with bay on them suit brown tack, it compliments them nicely!
    Good luck! X

    A dressage saddle makes it easier to stay on the horse during interesting behaviour. That's my experience. Going to buy a jumping saddle for my horse because it'll be easier to ride him with a light seat. It's so nice to see you again.

    The way that I see whether you should go black or brown, yes you might have to get some new tack if you go brown (if you feel you need to), BUT saddles are the most expensive piece, and later on its much harder to convince yourself to buy a whole new same saddle in a different color rather than just buying a few new pieces of tack later on down the line to match.

  • @lisakovic5256

    So good to have you back! I do love the brown on Woody as well! But maybe you might find the right fit only comes in one colour and that will take that decision out out of the picture 🤷🏻‍♀️ hope Mr Wood’s footsie is getting better too. Gosh I love your riding vlogs ❤️

    I’m trying to decide if I should buy a jump saddle or a dressage saddle but I have been worried about falling off since all I’ve ridden most in is an all purpose saddle.

    • @RidingWithRhi
      @RidingWithRhi  2 года назад

      I'm only getting a jump because I already have a dressage by chance. If I didn't I'd be in a GP! If you are set on one or the other then choose the discipline you'll be doing most. If you'll be doing a bit of everything at the lower levels then I'd stick with a GP!

    Question: do the different saddles have an impact on the horse or just the rider? Can a horse tell if you’re in a different saddle too?

    • @RidingWithRhi
      @RidingWithRhi  2 года назад +1

      Yes, different saddles will sit differently so they'll feel that, but if they are also impacting on they rider's ability to balance, sit square etc then they will feel this too

      I totally hear you. However, sometimes, we just don't have that option to ride with someone else and to be honest, I wasn't expecting him to be as spooky as he was until we set off! As my coach always says, we can only respond to the horse we are riding in the moment - which in my case meant slowing everything down, doing a simple approach and retreat and when the spookiness continued, bringing everything back to walk.
