I remember blowing a wad of tokens on this and Space Ace, and learning all of the patterns. Felt great going in, dropping a single token and beating the game while people crowded around you to watch and cheer you on!
I never did get good at space ace but I would finish this one every time, the arcade we played at used to keep high scores on a little plastic sign, for Dragons Lair me and my best friend would go back and forth till he couldn't beat mine anymore 419000
Wow I spent a lot of quarters playing this game...before school and then after ..there was this one kid that was a wiz at this game ..he taught me how to beat the game ..good memories of this ..
Thanks for the flashback! I remember being behind the controls and (finally) killing the dragon with a score of people behind me. It almost made the mountain of quarters I piled into this thing worth it!
I Spent Lots of Quarters and Tokens on This Incredible Game,,Before I Went to Work at The Gold Mine Amusements Arcade,in The Topanga Canyon Mall,in Canoga Park, When I was 17
Yeah, that's straight through no edits. Once I got back to being able to beat it dying only once I started recording everytime I played knowing I'd eventually capture a no-death pal through.
Keep in mind this game was originally designed to be an arcade game so they wanted to keep it short, yet difficult, so as to maximize coin input. Beautiful, fun game, if I say so myself.
You die many deaths to teach the end. I recall arcade staff had to put up a notice saying the game wasn't broken after many complaints. Some of the traps were devious yet logical.Sometimes doing the obvious was wrong. Brilliant game but it lost its attraction once you rescued the princess. 😶
They do. You can choose not to do all the side quests in Skyrim. You can choose to take the plumbing tube towards a shortcut in Mario. In fact this game has LESS choices in most games these days. Because you have to choose the right direction, the right button at specific times in order to go into the next step in this game. If you fuck anything up it's over. The choices in the games are there, but you simply are taking those choices for granted.
This is not the 1983 arcade cabinet coin op version. The sequences in the arcades were never in this order, plus the opening draw bridge fight scene was never part of the opening sequences. Dirk just ran into the castle with the gates closing behind him, followed by either the closing brick wall or the fire swings every time and then those were always followed by the horse knight, the chemical lab room or the rapids river. This must be some updated PC version that was released a bit later. Still good though.
You're right, this is not the original 1.x 1983 rom no, but also not a PC or console version. Like I mention in the details, this is the 2.1 rom. This rom restored the unused animations in the files (like bridge scene) and original sequence. It will even play the 12 prototype scenes that are on the final limited release laser disc if you have it. Details here: www.dragons-lair-project.com/tech/enhancements/dle21.asp I'm playing this on an arcade cabinet running the Daphne emulator for the original arcade Roms.
@@sethpeterson8261 Hopefully you can acquire the original 1 x 1983 version. The scenes tend to appear more at random in the late stages of the game, before trying to save the princess at the end with an occasional rouge sequence that tends to be much tougher than they should be, in terms of joystick timing or sword push. I've even seen the narrow purple checkerboard floor appear as the first scene on the highest difficulty setting and I can never pass it.
@@oldiesmusic76 I have several of the rooms, including the original 1.0. The 2.1 is the one I consider the best and most thematic though. Although the prototype mode from the limited edition Laserdisc with the unfinished scenes and action is fun for a couple playthroughs.
yeah im this old. I loved this game and part 2 ..and space ace and there was another one that i cant remember. I know at the end you defeat the bad guy in a giant clock like big ben and he gets crushed in the clock arms. I remember how back then if someone could beat these games....there would be a huge crowd watching cuz it was like watching a cartoon.
There were a couple others. Road Avenger was the one were you were in a badass car chase. I have that arcade version too, really like it (I believe they remade that one as a phone app). There was also Cliffhanger, which I only ever saw in real life once as a kid and thought it was awesome, but couldn't remember what it was called. Years later re-discovered it and realized it was actually footage from an anime... the name is escaping me right now
It's said that the game designers used Playboy Playmates as reference for the look of Daphne. I wonder if there was a particular Playmate she was modeled after.
I remember playing this in "The Fun Machine" local arcades we used to have. Pinball machines were illegal for kids to play back then, so we blew all our money on this, Asteroids, Galaxia, Space Invaders, etc. etc. Yeah, good job government. You saved us kids from the scourge of pinball machines. So instead we spent all our money on video games. On the other hand, why am I complaining? Virtual pinball games are just as good on consoles and PCs, plus arcade video games eventually spawned consoles and later PC games. So, actually, VERY good job government. Not that you meant things to go that way...
Yeah, straight recording with no edits. That's just how the actual game works. Once you make an input it cuts to that footage of animation and they didn't do the best job of making the transitions smooth.
This was a great game to watch someone else play, and cheer them on. But after several attempts, I stopped playing it myself. Fun to watch, not fun to play.
Yeah. One of the most well known games in pop culture too. They make it for everything, PC, consoles, phones apps... even just DVD players. Unfortunately many of the version are incomplete and missing scenes. This vid is taken from the actual arcade rom running in an arcade cabinet, but from an HDD not the original laserdisc
Wasted a lot of money. Maybe the biggest scam in video game history. How the hell did you even play it. I could never get past the first room. But damn it was cool looking. Grrr.
"The cage is locked-with a key!"
Oh, I thought it was one of those cages that locks with a ham sandwich. Thanks for clearing that up.
I remember blowing a wad of tokens on this and Space Ace, and learning all of the patterns. Felt great going in, dropping a single token and beating the game while people crowded around you to watch and cheer you on!
I have Arcade Space Ace too. I don't think I've ever even beaten it. Maybe I'll work on getting through that with no deaths
I miss those days. I played this and Space Ace, but could never get past the third or fourth event.
I never did get good at space ace but I would finish this one every time, the arcade we played at used to keep high scores on a little plastic sign, for Dragons Lair me and my best friend would go back and forth till he couldn't beat mine anymore 419000
I love how this game test your memory and reaction time
Yeah it's weird. When you play it the first time it's all reaction time. But as you replay it more and more it becomes straight memory.
Wow I spent a lot of quarters playing this game...before school and then after ..there was this one kid that was a wiz at this game ..he taught me how to beat the game ..good memories of this ..

Nice Job Seth. You did an Excellent Job saving Princess Daphne without any Casualties
Ha! Thanks
Dirk screams like Homer Simpson.
No, he screams more like Bruce Campbell.
Actually, Homer screams like Dirk.
After all his trials by fire; he still gets the girl.
I Spent Lots of Quarters and Tokens on This Incredible Game,,Before I Went to Work at The Gold Mine Amusements Arcade,in The Topanga Canyon Mall,in Canoga Park, When I was 17
Is this the actual play through time with no edits? This is fast!! Very impressive
Yeah, that's straight through no edits. Once I got back to being able to beat it dying only once I started recording everytime I played knowing I'd eventually capture a no-death pal through.

Oh this really satisfied my 12 yr old self who never had enough quarters to get through this game.
@@vahidbrignoni1631 Ha! Glad to help
This guy knows the pattern.
Yeah, but everytime I go more than a month or so without playing it, it takes a lot of games to get it all down again.
This game was a game changer it was his time far ahead I’ve played my hands totally blue on this one great times 🙂
Hello childhood… I learned most of the swear words I know from watching people play this
This was my childhood.
What a shoddy castle.
Word
its like an animated wizardry :-)))))
How come they don't make modern games like this with way more choices and data?
I wish
Warren Specter's games do
Because Women wouldn't like to be portrayed like this... -_-
Dragons Lair, and Space Ace are Laserdisc Arcade Games, and on Cartridge and CD Versions
They do. You can choose not to do all the side quests in Skyrim. You can choose to take the plumbing tube towards a shortcut in Mario.

One things weird about this game is that there's no music playing through out most of the game.

Dragon Lair is actually one of the hardest arcade games.
thank you for this
Princess Daphne is beautiful
Jessica Rabbits hotter
Oh my gawd, the ending is SO cheesy! :)

I like how this game is made to take all your money. goodbye future pension.
Thanx, great playing!
Good job man!:D
Thanks!
I forgot what a floozy Daphne was great 80s cheese

yea, it was introduced on a laser disc machine.
I thought this game was impossible wow 😳
Dirk needs a sidekick, I know DAVE THE BARBARIAN 😆
I want a reboot!
Whats with all the jump cuts? Is the game actually this jumpy all the time?
Yeah, straight recording with no edits. That's just how the actual game works. Once you make an input it cuts to that footage of animation and they didn't do the best job of making the transitions smooth.

Too bad Ryan Renolyds won't be playing Dirk. Netflix canceled this movie
What? First I've even hard of a movie and now I'm upset it's been canceled if he was going to play Dirk.
DRAGON'S LAIR ARCADE VS REVENGE OF THE MUMMY UNIVERSAL STUDIOS ORLANDO FLORIDA
DIRK THE DARING & PRINCESS DAPHNE VS IMHOTEP & ANCK SU NAMUN
Sounds awesome to me
This is jarring as hell
The janky transitions between scenes? Yeah, not sure why they couldn't combine the scenes smoother even using early LD technology.

Brain Dead 13 is better
Was it? I owned Braindead 13 on 3DO but don't remember it very well. It was almost 20 years newer to though.
Somehow you made Dirk the daring competent. Every time I played him he was clumsy and died a lot. 🤷🏻♂️
I hated this game as a kid because it looked so cool and I had no clue what you were supposed to do lol.
Haha, me too. I spent a lot of money all the while was clueless to what I was doing
