I've got the locking differential on my 2017 Chevy Colorado with the diesel engine. Recently drove through some thick mud that was covered with vegetation so I wasn't able to tell right away how deep the mud was. The differential kicked in when my tire started slipping and I was able to get out. Works great and I'm glad I have it.
Excellent point! We could all learn an thing or two from you! Keep up the excellent, insightful commentary.
My LSD spider gears ground themselves to dust.. Replaced gears.. Main pin broke and dropped spider gears.. Destroying ring and pinion gear. Got a rear end from junk yard that ended up having the g80 in it.. Only paid 170$. Im really happy with it. Got it dirt cheap
One of my favorite features on my Silverado
Try shock-loading it. You'll be switching to a TrueTrac the same day.
I love this i have a GMC and it works great. It is not junk at all. Very good truck great technology.
I have one in my 99 Mark III Chevy convertion van it has gotten me out of some serious mud and snow. Nice peace of mind with the right self cleaning tires. I had one in my 07 Silverado Classic 1500 hardly ever used 4wd
Have one on my 95 suburban. Works amazing still
That's cool. How long have you owned it since?
It works fine until you abuse it. WOT takeoffs on dry pavement kill em quickly. When one tire is spinning and that pawl catches it can only take so much shock before shit breaks.
That is exactly correct. Do not abuse it on dry pavement and it will last - even with a chipped Duramax. Mine has kicked in hundreds of times on mud and snow - sometimes even towing and 11 years and 150000 miles later still works perfectly.
So wot takeoffs on dry pavement kill them quickly? What if both tires have traction (no spin) and you take off at wot?
@@huntert6452 Its not meant to be a high performance traction aid. Theres no reason in a normal driving situation to be taking off at WOT on dry pavement.
@@fivestar8337 you’re right there is no reason but it’s fun
@@huntert6452 It's fun for your mechanic
Supposedly a G80 is what is in my 2002 S10 LS 4x4 crew cab. It gets around good in snow in 2wd and of course in 4wd.
got one on a '10 silver 15 its great
Great for truck use. Not great for drag racing
If you're going up an incline that curves, will it be locked up? If it's locked, won't one of the rear tires bind up and hop since one wheel isn't traveling as far as the other as in the case of being in 4X4 mode and on dry pavement?
It's not engaged by torque, it's engaged by centrifugal forces from the spinning tire, so unless you lose traction to one wheel while going up the hill it would be unlocked
No, the difference in wheelspeed has to be 120RPM for it to lock, way more than you'd get just going around a corner. Now, it will be a "thumper" (all or nothing, not like an LSD), locking and unlocking suddenly, so, there's that.
Nothing like trying to read subtitles while actually watching the video!
does anyone know if I can have this installed on my GMC Canyon after factory for a reasonable price. I just had a salesman tell me its not possible to add
Yes it is completely possible.. BUT all you need to do is look in the glove box for a sticker with three to four digit codes on it, one of those codes will say "G80" and boom you already have it, which you should cause its a standard feature for all GM trucks, even my 05 Cadillac CTS has it..
Get a TrueTrac instead.
It's the best system to lock the differential, i have a GMC Envoy and in the rear diff have this system
But how do you remove it mine got stuck in locking operation
@@4x4silveradorodriguez59 he just unlocks but if the locker got stuck you should go to a mechanic
@@georgedreikhajamale8581 thanks for the advice
It doesn’t have one in the front. You’ve got an open front differential like every other factory 4x4 except for Jeep with optional lockers.
@@SongOfSteel Yup. The FRONT locker is why I won't consider a 'Taco and will instead get a new 2023 Colorado ZR2.
I have this in my 2001 Chevy s10...I thought it was considered a poor design.
Ive got one on my Jeep xj in the front and i like it. got it for 25 bucks at pull a part
The worst. Get a TrueTrac or an ARB.
@@cablenowadays6586Eaton never made a G80 that fits in any front diff Jeep ever offered.
nesesito uno diferencia así para mi gmc sierra 1500 4.3 litro
I have a g80 rear differential on my 2000 suburban
How does it disengage?
it has springs that pushes it apart, the wheel slip compresses them and engages it
Is this the differential found in the Chevy's Colorado all over the world?
Nuno Mello It’s available in all GM truck with G80 option
It's a great design. I have a 25 year old work truck with the G80, never had any issues. My other 18 year old truck also has it. Don't listen to the dummies.
Does it work with TC Off or should be On?
It is 100 mechanical makes no difference
Yup. Totally independent of TC. My 05 Canyon has the g80, but no TC
When the rear tires are spinning more than 120rpm at high speeds, does this mean both axles are locked together during highway driving?
no when one wheel is spinning 120 rpm faster then the other one. on the highway both axles are turning at the same rate so it doesn't engage
There is a second weight that locks out the engagement of the diff lock above 20 mph
The G80 "GovBomb" is trash as far as longevity is concerned. The aggressive 'at speed' gear engagement is a terrible engineering principle, and it's crazy that GM promoted it so hard. Torsen had a better design. Eaton even has another design the TruTrac (or however they spell it) is infinitely better.
Gov bomb as it used to be known on the older trucks...hopefully these new ones hold together
My 1998 has 215,000 miles and is 23 years old and I've had zero issues with the locker. If you do burnouts and neutral drops you're gonna have problems.
Same old junk. My 2016 2500 locked up for no reason once in a parking lot, then unlocked and drove fine. Warranty was about to expire so i took it in and they found pieces of it in the bottom of the diff housing. Never abused since new. I figure there are many broken G80s driving around unbeknownst to the owners. If it wasn't covered under warranty, I definitely would have replaced it with something better. I put a Lock Right in my old 98 once I found the factory unit to be NFG. It's really the worst kind of locker; Too slow and it won't lock, too fast and you dig holes or break it.
@@SD-pi9co well you see, I'm building a 55 Cadillac with a 430 horse 383. I bought a S10 rear end and the gears look fine but it's a g80 8.625, we'll see how long it last
@@daltond7622 If you're building a car to race, it won't last long. They're not made for that. It will last indefinitely with everyday driving though.
@@SD-pi9co I appreciate your response, I'm building it to be a street car not for drag use, maybe a few burnouts a year.
I broke mine 🤔
bigger tyres?
Weak and not durable design
thats why you should only buy a Chevrolet.
This is not the only reason to buy Chevy its the LS engine as well as the g80 and the good ol dependability reliably long lasting quality is the reason to buy a Bowtie baby! Never any problems unlike my experiences with Ford
@@brandedmcgowan9414 Really? cause my 2018 5.3's engine lifters went out 2 years after purchase
@@AaronEmerald sorry to hear about that........ People say that the afm and direct injection cause carbon buildup (from the DI) and sludge buildup due to the engine not kicking all cylinders under power but pumps 1,2 or 4 cylinders for a measly 1 mpg increase. Never had problems with our 2010 tahoe 5.3 (older engine as vortec with SFI) had i for one year and couldn't keep the payments due to lost of my grandmother.
@@AaronEmerald Gotta get rid of the AFM bro
Ahh the good old gov-bombs..Can't believe they still put these ticking time bombs in trucks.
I have 220,000 miles on mine still waiting for it to go boom. I personally LOVE this feature. Best locking system there is, hands-down.
The G80 is a sack of dog shit.
Well...my sack of dog shit has lasted me 13 years strong and counting! Sucks to be you.
Garbage Motors junk
Eaton G80 Locking Rear Differential
ruclips.net/video/xdND6o9Vsqo/видео.html
it does better the Ford and Dodge, so what does that make them
its called long lasting Chevrolet for a reason.
guy proulx, and GM has been using Eatons locking differential since the 80's so it's not new
Anthony Webber , since mid 70's
I see gay ( guy ) has liked a lot of Toyota video's. Would lead me to believe he has never owned a real truck. Simply uneducated ( which is fine ), just shouldn't expose his limited knowledge on the web, could be dangerous.
