The drum solo is always gonna be iconic, but the guitar leading up to "that moment" will always be so hauntingly great.
And Questlove KILLS it! What's the most amazing to me is that Questlove does a 2-drummer part all by himself. If you look back at all the live versions of this song, you usually see a drummer keeping rhythm & Phil doing the iconic roll and all the fills that come afterwards. Very impressive

I agree. I love the fact he sounds older. There are so many great singers who we don't get to experience them still singing. Some because they passed away and others because of health issues and some (if not many) because they know people will give then crap for not sounding the same . I know Phil is seen as one of the greatest drummers and for him to get up there still sing and let someone else take over one of his most iconic drumming parts is awesome.
Everyone sounds different when they're old and sing, that's just part of life but Phil is still good

He even produced Eric Clapton, Chaka Kahn, worked w/Sting & also produced & played the drums on album & toured w/Led Zeppelin lead singer after Jon Bonham passed. Then, Jason Bonham played for Phil. What's amazing is when it first came out, it didn't come near the top of the charts. Maybe 19 or so. It became a better and more popular as the years have passed. It's absolutely timeless.
No song composed in the last 30 years comes anywhere close to delivering such a powerful build up of tension and explosive release as that iconic “In The Air Tonight” drum fill. Brings tears of joy to my eyes - and Questlpve nailed it with perfection.

the way phil's voice has changed over the years is fascinating. it has a completely different character now that he's so much older, but it lends a totally fresh tone to the song & he still sings with a ton of control. he really understands how to use all the new textures his voice has taken on to tell the story of the lyrics. dude is still one of the best ever to do it.

One of the greatest voices ever. Saw many of his concerts in my 20's.This is my ultimate favorite song of ALL music for me. He struggles with debilitating back pain and it looks like he's really struggling with pain here. Facial expression, hand in back, tight grip on mic stand. His back pain is what made him stop touring. :( Last of his concert were done sitting in a chair. He is LEGENDARY!!!

Age really got to him. You can feel it in his voice, the struggle to sing. He is slowly fading away and i will miss his music!

@Yankee Fan 11 years ago.. and it could be recorded even earlier. probably in 2004. he did a lot of live shows around that time.
He is doing very good for his age, a lot of other singers from that era don’t sound the same. Phil has mostly sound the same. Look at all rose for example, he’s still amazing but not what he was at all. Bon Jovi as well, but he just sounds different still very good.
Has nothing to do with his age. He hurt his back. It's gotten progressively worse since its appearance. If you don't know, all singers do know, if you hurt your back it's incredibly difficult to sing. You need to really puff up your lungs to push those notes, sustain those notes. You can't do that with a bad back. I've had it happen to me back when I was singing with a band. It's a nightmare.
@@heronpage3883 thanks for that comment. Having studied voice for a bit and being in a family of musicians (including vocalists) I understand the physical requirements to sing. It ain’t easy and injury can take a toll.

-Quest love, much respect for doing the song justice and throwing in very subtle touches of funk in there. I can imagine 10 years down the road telling people he played the most iconic drum fill of all time.
-My absolute favorite thing about Phil Collins, he doesn't look like one of the biggest rock stars in the history of music, just looks like your best friends dad.
I used to work for a Production Company that provided stage, PA, and Lighting for Concerts. Around the year 2002 we were providing everything for a Clearchannel/Budweiser Summer Concert Series. We ordered a whole brand new Yamaha drum kit for Questlove. Very expensive kit. I un-boxed everything. The only drums he used was Kick drum, Snare, Hi hat, Floor tom, and 2 Symbols. That's all he used, and he was badass. He can do it with less.

He gave it everything he had in this performance. It remains in my favorites and I revisit many times a year. A true artist for long as he could; only honor in that.

If you watched the whole show, he WAS freaked a bit about blowing it...therefore the crowds' reaction when he did!
Fletcher Hatcher or you can just leave him to whatever what he wants his name to be. that works too.
Like "Prince", "Madonna", "Moby", "Fatboy Slim" or any other musician that has a stage name. All terrible, right?
You can also see some relief there too. That part is fast and DEMANDS precision and PERFECT timing and you GOT to FEEL it. If any of those components are missing, it's going to sound like a cheap imitation.
Well, Jimmy certainly didn't need to fake any enthusiasm this time! His reaction was a perfect button on this freaking awesome performance. I honestly never expected anything on his show to make me tear up, but this did. Whole lotta nostalgia there, from 1981 up through the present, and it's awesome to see and hear that Phil's still got it.
Got chills when Questlove hit that fill.cheers to the director and camera crew to pull that off live too.

The man himself is a drummer, and with everyone expecting Questlove to play it as awesome as it should be, that's a lot of over-whelming peer pressure. The double kick drum with the toms, you can do it with a single drum stick, but to get the feel with the kick drum into the fill, and doing it as tightly as Questlove did, is actually very hard.
you seem to believe that a avarage drummer with 10 years experience, would be able to play this with all the nuances that were in this performance. you obviously know very little of music.
maybe at some point, you will also start to notice the subtle nuances that sets apart mediocre musicians from good musicians.
Yeh, I've played the drums since I was nine years old and can confirm it's really not that hard. (Even with the kick) Not that I'm dissing Phil or Questlove, got mass respect for both.

I loved this song, all my life! Then on the night of of February 10th 2018 my wife of 28 years died in my arms, from a blood clot. The ambulance came and took her away. They had worked on her for over an hour. It was a cold and wet night. I got in our car and headed to the hospital, this song was playing over the radio. It now, makes me feel guilty. I was a nurse, and I should have seen the signs of her condition. I’m alone with my guilt. We had been planning a special 30th anniversary. January 12th 2020 I spent the day with my wife next to her. I still have the $100.00 bottle of champagne. Phil if you read this, thank you so much. I have been a fan of yours and Geniuses since the 70’s. You are a gift to this world. Thank you 🙏

Now, this HE is a LEGEND and an ICON. He has earned that title, not what people call today, people that have been around for a couple of years and can't sing like that on their best day. They're icon, legend, diva, and queen. Those adjectives are earned and not be given away like candy.
At his consert in Norway in 2019, when this song started playing I literally cried my eyes out, so many memories of me and my dad when i was younger! I don't know how anybody else feels, but I LOVE the way Phil Collins' singing voice has matured as an elderly man. He sings In The Air Tonight with slightly different set of emotional flow throughout, compared to original performances, which I think gives it a whole new dynamic... again, adding to its timelessness. Excellent!

For his age I think Phil did an amazing job. Some say he was not as good. I say he sang great and as a songwriter myself, I will always want to hear the songwriter sing his song more than anyone else. Great job Phil. This song is so great, I now added it to my set list of Karaoke songs I sing. Everyone claps when the drums come in when I sing this song! Cheers!

You can tell how good a drummer is by the faces he makes. Questlove is focusing on the beats you can tell that by the expressions on his face, when he gets through the hard part he smiles. He is a true Drummer.
What hard part? Haha. The genius of this song is in the simplicity, any one taking drum lessons for a few months can play this.
