You touched on strumming soft vs louder which is super helpful but could you also talk about how you strum with a more accent on 1 & 3? When I use a pik it all.sounds the same ... loud and hard. I like the softer sound so I use my finger/nail.
the best way to make the softer sound with a pick is to not strum all the strings. And also, slightly angle the pick towards you on a down strum so there is less resistance
