The material of the clothes enhances the sound (thicker cotton will work best) but it won’t create sound where there isn’t any. You have to “snap” your techniques, going from relaxed (before releasing) to tense (where the strike would make impact) very fast. Try just launching your arms forward and then bringing them back to chambered position as fast as you can while wearing any karategi to check if you get the idea.

I think people like you worry too much about macho stuff and won't to be "seen" to be doing Mhui Thai and the like just dont get Karate, Kata is not a display of "hey everybody look what I can do" it's more a display on mental inner strength and scenrenity, just to have the inner discipline to be able to train like that in itself should be enough. Most people can't get off their own couch after a days work. Please have respect for people who train like this. Karate may not be the "everything" Martial Art people are looking for these days but it is beautiful never the less. Oss
