Heard this instrument for the first time during Beating the Retreat ceremony in Delhi. Abide with Me was played with all other instruments not playing at all- in silence the sound of the tubular bells was so pure and so pristine. A soul lifting experience.
This instrument has been used in: -Shin Megami Tensei 4 -Deltarune -Terraria Calamity Mod -Rivals of Aether -Touhou Project Seriously, why does every single niche videogame artist use this soundfont?
Tubular bells are also popular with Hip Hop/Trap music; Lil Wayne 'Burn' , Young Jeezy 'Halloween Massacre', 2Pac "Hail Mary", etc. I'd argue that it's one of the few genre that actually does anything interesting with it that goes beyond the 1st down beat and into something melodic.
I have always wanted to learn this instrument and the xylophone they are the nicest sound in my opinion like the beautiful sound in the song “ come let us adore him sung by clay Aiken that Tubular bell chime ending is just amazing aaaah sounds like heaven just beautiful
Only instrument I ever played in a public performance, over 50 years ago. I was stage managing "The Beggars Opera", which called for church bells in the final act. There was no room in the orchestra pit. The musical director knew I could read music, and that I would be able to see him through a spyhole, so I played, only for three performances.
I remember we had one of these in my middle school band class. I think only 2 songs we played ever called for it but it was always so fun to play. Percussion really is awesome with so many different instruments all with different feelings that you get from playing them. Playing the massive base drum was probably my favorite with xylophone being my second fave. Oh almost forgot timpani drums are tied for second since they're so awesome I don't want to put them any lower.
I usually heard the sound of Chimes during Christmas season. Which makes me think Chimes is best for Christmas since it replicates the sound of Church's Bells.
Lmao the owner of this account is probably wondering why we're all here. If we gave him the sheet music, I wonder if he'd play that part from SMT4 for us
@@MusicArteTux that's my mistake. You missed a chance to play The Exorcist theme, which happens to be called tubular bells. Seriously, why has nobody played that theme on this instrument? It would literally be Tubular bells on tubular bells
Find it a bit perplexing how people are surprised by this instrument! The sound has been readily in the hands of composers since at least the DX7 synth! Soundtrack composers love this bell.
Question from a composer-I’m writing an orchestra piece and I actually think a more harmonic-filled sound would suit my work better. How do I notate or communicate that to chime players?
Does it hurt the bells if you strike them without holding down the pedal at all? My former band teacher never told us if that was the case, and I'm wondering because I'm planning on writing a piece where a muted sound would be better than a prolonged sound.
What songs feature this a lot? Ive never found one...apart from the song from the trailer "Joy" I put it on my channel if you want to hear it, but you never hear it featured so much in any other music.
@@kevindunne5753 The exorcist theme doesn't feature tubular bells. They only come around like, 5 minutes after the exorcist theme ends. They also appear in the closing section of the song. Other than that, however, yes. Mike Oldfield does indeed use the instrument a fair bit. Once you've listened to tubular bells, Amarok is just pure delight.
I’ve seen these a lot in large orchestras, especially in large churches. The person playing them often play other forms of percussion as well. So there’s a drummer, and then the “secondary”…?? Not sure what you would call it? Second percussionist maybe.
@@gnesix52 Do you know whether there is sheet music for the song "Tubular Bells". I have a hard time in finding solo pieces for chimes/tubular bells in general
My whole life i thought they were just the regular round shaped bell like you see on top of churches. I feel dumb for not thinking about the appearance based on its name. 🤣
wow I didn't know this instrument exist until people said they used this on SMT 4 Apocalypse "B2 Boss theme". Neato!
Well, actually it was the original SMT IV, but it was in Apocalypse too.

Yes, I think you are correct.
I’ve seen glockenspiel, xylophone; marimba and vibraphone all referred to as “keyboard percussion.”
Thank you for this very informative class.
I'd love to play Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield on one of these
If you'd like to get the right sound, you have to use a 12oz claw hammer instead of the mallet :)
Awesome job Gary.

I’m in percussion in middle school if u play the letter e it sounds like Taco Bell
how wonderful
can you play 4 tubes at a time with two precisionists? I'm writing for it and I need a chord!
I think that’s possible if you grip the mallets the same way some people play the vibraphone. With two sticks in one hand.

We can see Alan Wilder playing on this in the A Question Of Lust video.
