    2. engagement ring
    3. big ass TV
    4. corn horn shoes or eisenhoward jacket

What a great list. The #1 was spot on. There used to be dealerships who specialize in taking advantage of new sailors. I also found that corofams didn't do well on ice I used furniture polish to shine mine. I only wore mine while I was on shore duty.

There’s a military auto source where I’m stationed that preys on new sailors to buy brand new vehicles cause they know they can get approved for the loan.

Absolutely “spot on”! Excellent and sound advice (mentoring for younger/new recruits). I’m a mustang and second generation career military with two remote tours and nine deployments. Everything Garrett mentioned are the top pitfalls and mistakes made by many upon entry into the service. Great job!

Everything you said was spot on. Especially about the car, and extravagant purchases. I'm sure the Captain doesn't have a $2,000 watch. One of the biggest indicators that you are getting close to a military town is an over abundance of seedy pawn shops and used car lots. Drive around Biloxi Ms, Pensacola FL, Puyallup WA, San Antonio, TX, Dothan, Al. Etc ... & you'll see what I'm talking about. And don't even think about marriage until you're at least an E-5 ! Many of us have even made suggestions to the powers that be, that the last week of basic, and the last two days of tech school, OCS, and even the Academies be devoted to basic finance and life skills. And one biggie that deserves a minute is DO NOT buy any Firearms ! You can't bring one aboard, and unless you are in off base housing, you'll have to store it with the CMAA or Provost Marshal - that goes for Officers too. There's limited storage space, more "work" involved, and generally the "privelege" of being able to store one is for senior NCOs, Officers, and MP/MAA types.

Solid advice! I'd say this even applies at your first duty station. You really don't need a car if you're on base. Save the money if you can and walk to work. I was a minute walk to work or get a cheap bike. I'd wait a year or so for the car as that will be probably your biggest purchase ever.

The advice in this video is applicable to any service branch. I would add two more bits of advice. Don't buy a new car or get married until you are at least an E-5. Save as much money as you can during your first enlistment contract. Not everyone will be a lifer and your bank account could finance the beginning of your life after military service.

Some good advice coming out of boot camp. I'm not offended by your swearing just disappointed. As a retired LDO and Chief Petty Officer I can tell you swearing has its place. It should not be part of your daily language in the Navy as it loses it's effectiveness in communication. The best leaders I had over 30 years in the Navy very seldom if ever swore. Take a look at your Command Master Chief and see if he is doing it on a daily basis. I found that younger sailors did this a lot when they were very new in the Navy and trying to find their place. Leaders or potential leaders should be able to communicate without it. Trust me it will not be tolerated in industry after you get out. Or I suspect at most of your mother's tables. Just a thought from an old retired sailor.

It's funny how the barracks parking lot looks like a damm car show with a bunch of $40k-$50k cars. Meanwhile, these kids CO's are driving beaters to work. Theres a reason. If I could give financial advice to the barracks kids I would say, stop eating out every day and utilize the damm galley.

Alex 34 nah it's not hard it's just a lot of information to take in all at once and the computer training is super boring. I would encourage you to get top grad with the top grade in the class cause you get automatic E-3 if you weren't already and then a letter of recommendation to you next command for early promotion. Just don't get caught up in the stupid stuff people do here

Number 2 I cannot stress enough how much you do not wanna buy an engagement ring in A school. even if it's for your high school sweetheart who you've been dating for years, things will go badly eventually with that relationship. MAYBE if you know for sure you're gonna end up living together at your 1st duty station or something but even then just wait until you're at the duty station to get married and all that shit. I'm still trying to sell the ring I bought, luckily it was pretty cheap for an engagement ring but still

Once I’m 50 I’ll have over 1 million dollars if I kept it waited till 70 I would have over 4 million saved up on top of that I’ll have my 401k and pension from the marine core and a pension from the fire department. Uuugh the dumbest phrase it’s yo boi . I will break it down for you boots once you enter fleet/ school’s battalion take half of your after boot camp earning , open a Roth IRA then after schools when you get that enlistment bonus half again into your Roth also set up a direct deposit of 10% to the Roth . Next open a savings account and put 20% into it. Everything left over is your allowance. Now I know this may suck for awhile but long term you will be set for emergencies and life’s little curveballs. YAT-YAS

Biggest thing you can do to prepare is to stay in shape and study the material your recruiter gave you. Basic training had a lot of cardio and body weight exercises so focus more on that rather than lifting weights and be studying your general orders, ranks, etc because you’ll be tested on all of that daily so if you already know most of it when you get there you’ll be ahead of everyone else.

Zackariah Craig Jr who told you you can't have a mustache? It's been like that for a long while for all branches. Now in boot camp you have to be completely shaven but once you're out of boot camp you can grow a mustache. Regs state that it just can't extend more than a 1/4" past the corner of your mouth to the left and right and can't hang over your top lip.
