DSG Transmission - Explained

  • What is a DSG transmission? How does a direct shift gearbox work? A DSG transmission is a dual clutch transmission used by Volkswagen. A DSG uses two wet, multi-plate clutches to activate separate drive shafts which send torque via the even or odd gear sets. Because the gear sets are on separate shafts, this allows for preselecting the next gear, allowing for nearly instantaneous gearshifts without a total loss in torque. DSG tranmissions operate a lot like manual transmissions, but they are electronically controlled and thus the gear selection can be either automatic or manual, but does not require the use of a clutch pedal as this is all activated automatically.

      Honestly I think I picked up a good portion of this surprisingly. Whenever people tried to explain how a manual trans works to me when I was younger, trying to learn stick, they honestly just confused me so much more than if they told me how to use the clutch and not explain how the transmission is actually working. However if I watched this video it would’ve made much more sense now.

    I just got a DSG car (ford fiesta) and have driven a 5-speed manual for many years. I heard a lot of complaints about the dual-clutch being jerky and not good at low speeds, but I've driven this 'new' car like I would have driven a stick, and it's not given me much problems. The clunky sounds it makes always makes me cringe, but this video really helps explain how my transmission is working. I've heard "it's a manual that shifts automatically" but this really gave me insight as to what that actually means.
    Thanks!

    I have an 06 Audi tt with dsg and really like it a lot . I was happy to learn that the C8 Corvette has an 8 speed DSG. I'm a guy who grew up with, and really like the standard transmission , but if you only have one car you drive daily there is a point in your life that you get tired of pushing in the clutch in stop-and-go traffic just to move ahead 20 ft. For me the DSG transmission is the best of both worlds. Sport mode regular mode paddle shift bump shift offers a lot of variety in a lot of fun without wearing out your knee. My brother-in-law had a Mazda Miata that he put 250,000 miles on with a standard transmission. He needed to have his knee replaced. I asked my sister which knew it was, she said his clutch knee.

    looks like this one had the same problem as my dct box has currently. the synchromesh rings are worn out causing heavy grinding on the thin gears which are needed so the shifter rings can engage upon them. this problem is pretty common for dct transmissions because of the frequent need for oil change (every 60k km) which IS NOT specified by the manufacturer. If the mechanic over sees this and your driving style is on the sporty side the synchromesh rings will start to wear out way before you hit the 200k km. The brain of the gear box does not know if the synchro is worn so it shifts without giving enough time for the gears to line up which is something you can do with a manual box. thanks for the video this is exactly what i needed to see.

      What is the actual cause of the dsg fart?

    • @ARentz07
      @ARentz07 4 года назад +2

      @@mbulelomankonkwana8038 First, the ECU cuts timing during the shift, but fuel delivery continues for a brief moment. So, some unburnt fuel makes it into the exhaust, which is hot. So the fuel gets ignited, making the sound. The reason for the timing being cut is to prevent the engine from revving while the shift is occurring.

  • @2K_Unlimited

    Great explanation all around.
    A more common preselection error would be gently accelerating to close the gap on a 2 lane road before reaching a passing zone. All indications to the computer are that the next higher gear will soon be more efficient at a higher speed. When you reach the passing zone, if traffic is clear, you step on the gas to use more power and shorten your passing time, best done in a lower gear.
    Also, I question the location of the gears as stated, you might check those. If 5th and 6th are run from the same shaft, there's no physical possibility of preselecting 6th.
    Honda claims on their DCT all even gears are separate from all odd gears to achieve the same effect. I have not looked at the DSG, but in an attempt to achieve the same task, it just doesn't make sense for any consecutive gears to use the same power shaft. Well, we hope there's a stop before reverse anyway, but not the others.

    I used to have a Mark5 Golf GTI. Occassionally it would take 1-2 seconds to engage after putting my foot down after creeping forwards waiting to turn at lights. I think you nailed the explaination in that the conntrol unit was confused and expecting to down shift. The dealership had absolutely no idea!
    Also in sports mode the downshift from 3rd to 2nd was very harsh as it changed as a much higher RPM.
    Now drive a Renault Clio RS, which I think has a similar assembly

    So basically its a manual transmission using an automatic transmissions clutch packs and pistons. With the combination it might last longer then both wear wise because you don't have to worry about all the clutch packs a normal automatic has or the clutch going out like a manual. Since it's all computer controlled, as long as the electronics hold up, it should have over 100,000 miles of life or 200,000+ maybe.

    i drove a 2015 Skoda Octavia diesel in Scotland and I think the Skoda used this trans. The car shut the engine off instead of idling at a stoplight (should have seen the looks on our faces first time it stopped) . Seemed to work real good, but had a couple of scares on steep hills when stopped. You had to release brake to restart engine, but then car freewheeled backwards and couldn't seem to cut back in forward. Took a couple of restarts but finally pulled forward, scared the guy behind too. Might just have been my lack of experience. Put about 1800 miles on. Seemed powerful enough for a fair size car with only a small engine, hauling 4 adults and lots of luggage.

    I just bought a 2017 audi a3 e-tron which is a plug-in hybrid with an interesting triple clutch gearbox DQ400e (also used in Golf/Passat GTE).
    I found some information on it (looks like electric engine is integrated with the gearbox?) but I'd LOVE to see a video explaining this drivetrain a bit more. I think it's quite unique also in the way the power from the electric motor goes to the wheels through the gearbox which usually is not the case (unless it's a CVT maybe).

    Drove a 2023 Tiguan with DSG and I didn’t like it at all. It’s not as smooth as a traditional Automatic, and not quite as intuitive as a person driving a real manual. For some reason when I came to a stop it was clearly jumping from 2nd to 1st, giving a little extra oomph against the brake pressure leading to a secondary small lurch. Dealership said it’s common when you first drive them and I’ll adapt to it?!

    Question: I thought you said that the main purpose of a dual clutch transmission is to separate odd and even gears for speed, but in this video you state that the output shaft #1 had the gears 1, 2, 3, and 4. The other shaft handles the rest of the gears. And one clutch is connected to one shaft, which means that the purpose of this DGS is just wrong. What am I missing? :)

    • @ethelmini
      @ethelmini 8 лет назад +1

      That's actually 2 shafts, one above the other, just like in the whiteboard video. 1 & 3 on the top shaft, 2 & 4 on the bottom.
      They didn't explain how 5 & 6 work on an extra shaft, I can only assume at least one of the first four gears acts as an idler???
      Anyway, all those (big) cogs look like loads of rotating mass, you'd barely need to engage a clutch to keep feeding torque to the wheels!

    I think what people describe mostly about DCT transmission is in stop an go traffic especially if they were used to a torque converter tranny that is only felt in first gear and reverse Charles you should mention that there is a version in the Jetta hybrid with dry clutches and seven speed.

    what are your opinions on dual clutch transmissions? are they good/reliable?

    • @winemeer7383
      @winemeer7383 7 лет назад +2

      Spawn223311 Transverse 6 speeds (wet clutch) are very good. Some early versions had problems with their mechatronic units, though they have been adressed and fixed. They are very strong boxes and this have been proved from the tuning scene. Stock clutches can handle huge amounts of torque if the box has been remaped. Gears are also pretty good for a 350nm rated gearbox. They can handle almost 750-800nm before giving up. Keep in mind though that they need to be serviced every 40k miles (fluids and filter) and this is really important for gearbox life.
      Later 7 speeds (dry clutch) are not so reliable.( Im not talking about ttrs/rs3 dq500 units, those are 7spd wet clutch and really good) They have some issues with their clutch packs and their mechatronic units (completely different from 6spd) seem to fail often. I really hope that vw has adressed the issues.

    So if the Dual-Clutch Transmission does the shifting why would some cars still have the paddle shifter? is it because of more driver control? I know that F1 cars are DCT but have paddle shifters. I mean ultimately, wouldn't it be self-defeating for a DCT to be controlled manually again ?

    • @EngineeringExplained

      +TheGreenCommunity It's nice to be able to control what gear you're in (that's the only way it works in motorsport). Also, F1 does not use DCT.

      Early VW and Audi models did have problems but most if not all were rectified by 2014. I have a 2015 S4 DSG with 82k haven't had an issue yet. The problem is most people will not service the DSG under the dealer recommendations therefore shortening the life of the DSG causing premature failure.

    As much as these types of transmissions being claimed are better I personally hate them, in slow moving traffic they are all over the place in gear selection, out on the highway when you go to overtake a slower moving vehicle when the computer sets the gear box up to go to the next higher gear and you put your foot down and have to wait for it to wake up and select a lower gear, at least with a traditional auto trans there is no waiting for a lower gear to be selected, you put your foot down and done, and with the 3 vehicles I've driven with these DSG trans non of them where smooth with gear changing thud and clucking noises every gear change, feel the gear change shock through the vehicle makes for unpleasant driving experience and a personal dislike for DSG trans.

    you should explain why these transmissions are unreliable as f**c.

    • @droceretik
      @droceretik 8 лет назад +49

      +TheRealDeal Then you should show the evidence that DSG transmissions are unreliable as f**k. You are asking for an explanation which relies on your statement being fact. In your evidence you should give the failure rate compared to other transmission types, the average service lives, the number of failures per vehicle service life, the number of days off the road due to DSG failure compared to other transmission types. Also you could include number of warranty claims for DSG failures and the average cost of DSG failures compared to other transmission types. Do you have personal experiences with DSG reliability? If you have had a vehicle with DSG, how was the car driven? Was it serviced properly, was it thrashed/abused? How many miles did it reach before failure/problems?

    • @JoJoJoker
      @JoJoJoker 8 лет назад +4

      They are less reliable than a typical 4-speed torque converter transmission because they are more complex and have clutches. Drive both a Mk6 & Mk7 GTI with DSG. The Mk6 is making a scratching noise upshifting to 4th. That said, dry dual-clutch transmissions are the ones with major problems. They have no oil bath.

      +TheRealDeal had to replace the mechatronic control unit on my a3 2006. Fortunately it was real easy to replace and code, but the price just for the unit alone was $1285. Unit started failing at 70,000 miles, car now has 98,000. Doing some research, I see that its such a common issue that Audi/VW extended the warranty of 2007 - 2013 for the dsg. Also, if the new a4 is any indicator I think Audi/VW will eventually stop using dsg.

    • @MrLobsterity
      @MrLobsterity 8 лет назад +7

      +TheRealDeal The clutch is unreliable, because it is an expendable part and always needs replacement after some time. All people I know who have DSGs and are driving in Moscow traffic jams, are going through clutch replacement about every 80.000 kilometers. Maybe their clutches would last forever if they have driven only on highways.
      The competition between DSG producers is not high yet, so they don't care about the cheapness of repair at all. It happens so that for my manual Lada Samara the clutch was engineered like expendable part, and the new clutch costs 18$ + 2 hours of mechanic's job, but in DSGs the clutch is engineered like a part of gear box, so the new clutch can cost more then 1000$.

      Илья Медов The same for my ford escort, when i swapped 2.0l engine in it, i also changed the clutch. On a car simple like lada classic for example changing the clutch is almost as simple as changing brake pads.
