Hi WILLIAM LAST, Happy to read you enjoy this Lady and her "Black Cat" :-) AND... it's your "Dream car" too. Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
What an awesome Cougar! Always a favorite of mine because of the hidden headlights & sequential taillights. Glad Charlotte has kept this so car long. What a rarity. Way to go Charlotte!!
I had a store clerk laugh at me when I mentioned about the 1950's and 60's original car for the static display that was a clay model . Today the cars are designed in Auto CAD with a 3D printer to make parts or a 3D file for the CNC milling machine to make a part for casting. If someone took all the Maker's badges off their cars, you could line up 30 sedans or 15 cross-overs where I can only guess the Company that made it. I think that it's insane for Makers to build small 4 door cars when we have an Aging Population where people need large door to get in and more room inside . It's like the Radio stations catering to the youth music and Rap when that demographic was shrinking about 8% a year as people had less children while while immigrant entered with adult children over 19 .
Car is Awesome!!! 390, 4 speed and Black. Wow. ''78, a member of family finished his gig with USMC and bought a car, a cherry "67 Cougar in metallic green, black interior and a black and green 'hounds tooth' vinyl top. Pretty sure it was a 302 and automatic. For some reason, less than 2 years later it was gone. Relpaced with v6 Pinto wagon, van conversion style. He loved this car.
Back in the early 1980's - I had a Black '67, Red '68 and a '70 Green XR-7. The '67 and 70 were originals in mint condition, and the '68 was a ground-up 500 HP build. Times got hard and I made one of the worst mistakes of my life by selling them. Enjoyed watching the video - thanks for the stroll down memory lane. Cheers,
Hi SRm, Sounds like you had some wonderful cars :-) I think the quite came from Dr. Seuss who said, "Don't be sad it's over. Be glad it happened." That quote helps me at times when I've lost someone or something, and I hope it helps you too, Lou
I feel your pain. I thought i had to sell my nova ss after losing a contract for my then-young business. Took a bath on the sale. Turned out that I definitely could have kept my car. I am currently restoring two Novas right now: one base nova, and one SS .
@@larryhawkins3294 Hidden headlights are my favorite feature of classic cars. It's the reason I've owned several cars with them: '65 Riviera, '67 Eldorado '68 Cougar XR-7, '69 MK III from the late '80's through about 2002. I currently drive a '96 Collector's Edition Corvette Convertible. The most dependable system was the all electric one on the Riviera. The others had leaks. Currently there are all electric conversion kits for Cougars and I'd bet for the other models too, but when I owned those cars, either they weren't available or I missed that memo. I read an article that said the insurance cost of repairing/replacing those systems, coupled with owner complaints over units freezing in cold climates, caused car manufacturers to stop offering them. I lived in CA with all of my cars except the Eldo. I bought it when I returned to Dallas. Even if your home had a garage, it'd be frustrating to stand in freezing temps, at night, trying to free stuck covers, just so you can see, after a hard day at the office. I'm one of the few guys that would put up with that inconvenience.
I love Cougars Lou! I have loved them my whole life and I think by far they out do a Mustang by far! I love this old car very nice I am so glad she kept it original! Love the engine sound and those headlights and tail lights too. A awesome ride and the owner was a cool lady too!
The first time FORD ran their Ads on TV in 1966 , the car was amazing because it was the high-end model that had hidden headlights while the base engine was the 289 V8 . The Galaxie, GTO and Impala/Caprice didn't get hidden lights unitl 1968 . The Cougar's rear lights were from the T-bird concept for sequential and almost ran the entire width with the Plate space in the middle and gas filler flap . The first time I saw a Corvette was in the fall of 1964 when a new 1965 was park at a Company down the street from me. It was yellow with black inside and remember the wood steering wheel and black vinyl top and hide away head lights. The Cougar was what a person would see at a Futurama auto show , but the Mustang was so successful to pump out over 1 milion from april 64 to august 66 that Mercury wanted their version and built it at the F code plant in Detroit along side the Mustangs. While the Unibody was pretty well a base frame from the Mustang it was only the Trunk lid that was a Mustang part .

@@loucostabile I am already a subscriber. This one was very special to me and my first “ New “ car . Yes I’m older . Mine had the exact same wheels and was ordered late 67.
Love seeing the winged messenger of the gods on the centers of the wheels ! Charlotte must baby this cat as both vacuum operated hidden headlights open smoothly. Cougar was positioned perfectly by FoMoCo between Mustang and Thunderbird. What a classy lady and her car!
Lou, thanks for covering so many Cougars and muscle Mercs. Great story behind this one. Neat lady - knows what she likes and what she’s got - even if was “The MAN’S Car”. Lol
Just the right options to order a 390 4 spd , tilt wheel , console , tinted upper front window , power disk brakes , GT decor, vinyl roof , power steering , Tilt steering and GT rims . It's almost the XR7 but I like that roof with no badges slapped on the side to collect water and dirt behind them . Not much that I would would change if I ordered one in 1966 other than no console but the headliner console option and maybe standard steerting .
Hi, Lou! Mercury may have called itself "The Man's Car" in 1967, but with Charlotte having owned this one for nearly all its life I think she will beg to differ! This was the first Cougar as you mentioned, and so it was with this car that Mercury became "The Sign of the Cat" (ROWRRR!). It was also around that time that the familiar red, black and blue signs with the Ford Oval began to appear at Lincoln-Mercury dealerships (and the two-tone blue signs for Ford). And just as the Ford Division had its horse-themed vehicles (Mustang, Bronco, Maverick, Pinto), Mercury would later have a couple more cats: the Bobcat and the Lynx. This car was like the perfect combination of style, sportiness and luxury, so no surprise that this was Car of the Year for '67. The Cougar went from ponycar to personal luxury car with the 1974 model year, and it even went four-door and, briefly, wagon for '77, when the line expanded to replace the Montego. Lou, you found us a real car gal with a real cool cat! Another fine presentation on "My Car Story"!
Kinda funny I never paid any attention to these cars when I was a kid. My friend had gotten his hands on a 67 XR7 and I got a ride in it. It was nothing to look at but it had a decent interior. I was so impressed with the dash on this car with all the switch's and gauges across the dash with the wood grain, really nice the way it was done. Anyway looking at these cars now I think they are one of the most unique looking cars now with beautiful body lines. And lets not forget the best thing, the hide-a-way headlights and sequential tail lights. I'm a sucker for hide-a-way lights and the sequential's were the icing on the cake, always thought it was James Bond 007 like...love em! Then they ruined this car and made it a big sloppy luxury slob the newer Cougar's are just to big...67 was the year for this car and with a stick very sweet really nice car but needs to be an XR7.

Hi Lou, some 67 Cougar facts: 1. Jaguar sued Ford because their Cougar cat resembled Jaguar's. That forced Mercury to add the name "COUGAR" under the cat emblem on the grille 2. 67 Cougar VIN #000001 the very first Cougar is alive and restored to councours condition, own by a collector in California. It sat in a quonset hut in New Brunswick Canada for decades before being purchased and restored here in the States. It's bright red with a white vinyl top Great video as always!!
What a beautiful car! I would love to see Charlotte drive it. I have a 2002 Cougar, 5-speed that I’ll be putting away for the winter. My dream is that one day it becomes a classic. One can always dream, right?
This car definitely gets a thumbs up. Almost forgot the GT package was offered on the Cougar in 67. I do remember that tilt steering wheel and fingertip speed control was offered as well. Power windows weren't available until 69.
Oh my, oh my, gorgeous, love it, want it! Many of us forget about the Cougar while all the glory goes to the stang...love the fact that its a manual trans! Hidden headlights on the Cougar and LTDs of the 60s really do it for me. What is the engine displacement, 289 (might have missed that)?

Очень. Очень. Очень красивый автомобиль как внешне так и в салоне.....Хозяева данного автомобиля молодцы что содержат это чудо в прекрастном состоянии. Это действительно неповторимо и очень прекрастно смотриться в наше время.
Wait, I knew of a guy who owned a 67-68 Mustang fastback GT(A) in the early to mid 80s. I'd see it 5 days a week when my school bus passed by his house, where the car sat in the driveway. It came with a factory 390, but because it also came with an automatic transmission, it was NOT called a GT. It was a GTA. The A is obviously for automatic. I would think it may be the same for Cougars(maybe). Great car and great video either way!

I had a 68 GT/XR7 . Luxury and performance. I hit 110 easy. Mercomatic C6 and a 390 with 3:25 gears . Gold on Gold . Dont remember the exact color name. It had the lights in the doors, front footwells, B pillar lights, and overhead console lights . It was a California car. Wish i had kept it.

Hi Robert Amoyaw, Appreciate your kind words, and glad you're along for the ride :-) Lou
Screw the Limes!!
What a badass ride especially with the big block 390 legendary motor the one Bullit had.
Hmmm, what if that green Mustang was a Cougar Steve McQueen drove.......
Great car!
Hi Richard Bruckner, Glad to read you enjoy this car :-) Stay tuned, there will be a few more "Big Cat" cars on the Channel coming up, Lou
OMG ! I had a ‘68 GT Xr7 loved seeing this mine was black on black too but had saddle interior .

@@loucostabile I am already a subscriber. This one was very special to me and my first “ New “ car . Yes I’m older . Mine had the exact same wheels and was ordered late 67.
Thats a beauty. My cousin had a green one with a 289 auto. Don't see too many of them around any more.
Hi Tracey Bonner, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car, and thank you for sharing details on your Cousin's green Cougar too :-) Lou
Love seeing the winged messenger of the gods on the centers of the wheels ! Charlotte must baby this cat as both vacuum operated hidden headlights open smoothly. Cougar was positioned perfectly by FoMoCo between Mustang and Thunderbird. What a classy lady and her car!
Hi Dr Akbar, You're right about those headlights. I believe they work well because she uses them, Lou
Lou, thanks for covering so many Cougars and muscle Mercs. Great story behind this one. Neat lady - knows what she likes and what she’s got - even if was “The MAN’S Car”. Lol
Hi Matt's Kustom Kreations, Happy to share this episode with you :-) Lou
Great Cougar! Thanks Charlotte for showing us your cool ride.
Glad to read you enjoy this Cougar :-)
How often do we see a gal daily drive a four speed? You go girl!
Pretty cool for sure :-)
Hi iswc27, Find finding a "Car Gal" to share her car with us :-) I appreciate the kind words on this presentation, Lou
Wowzers
This is a top of the list car. Thanks for the video!
Glad to read you enjoy this "Big Cat" :-) You're welcome.
Hi Steve V, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Friends car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

An orginal and unmolested cat. That cougar is beautiful. The owner bought the car with 7,000 miles back in the 60s and has kept it all this time. Wow. That was a good one Lou. I'm glad the owner was nice and allowed you to showcase her car.
Hi jay kay Glad to read you find this car beautiful, and happy you enjoy Charlotte's story with her Black Cat :-) Lou
Nice car ! My first car was a 68 XR7. Which I still had it

Hi Lou, some 67 Cougar facts:
1. Jaguar sued Ford because their Cougar cat resembled Jaguar's. That forced Mercury to add the name "COUGAR" under the cat emblem on the grille
2. 67 Cougar VIN #000001 the very first Cougar is alive and restored to councours condition, own by a collector in California. It sat in a quonset hut in New Brunswick Canada for decades before being purchased and restored here in the States. It's bright red with a white vinyl top
Great video as always!!
Hi gojoe283, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Good story! Ford should put this first Cougar in their museum.
She gets my vote; it is indeed a beautiful car. Of course I’m a bit biased; my first wife had a 67- Zr7 w/390 FE engine.
Hi Chris Moody, Glad to read you enjoy this car and have nice memories of your 1st wives car too, Lou
Very cool 😀 Awesome the origonal owner still own's/drives it .
Hi Michael Coffey, Glad to read you enjoy this episode :-) Lou
@@loucostabile 😀
Stunningly beautiful car!!!
High praise :-)
Thank you, Lou & Charlotte!, A rare Cat indeed.....I forgot about these Cougars, also....
You're welcome, and good news regarding seeing more Cougars....stay tuned :-)
What a beautiful car! I would love to see Charlotte drive it. I have a 2002 Cougar, 5-speed that I’ll be putting away for the winter. My dream is that one day it becomes a classic. One can always dream, right?
Hi mimi0731, Glad to read you enjoy this car :-) You're doing great being a fantastic Care Taker for your car, Lou
Lou Costabile Thank you. It has around 75,000 miles, mint. Hard to keep it that way in MN winters.
Keep doing the best you can :-)
This car definitely gets a thumbs up. Almost forgot the GT package was offered on the Cougar in 67. I do remember that tilt steering wheel and fingertip speed control was offered as well. Power windows weren't available until 69.
Happy to receive a "thumbs up" from you :-)
What a gem! These were so cool looking then and remain so to this day.
Glad to read you enjoy this car :-)
Even though the 67 Mustang Fastback is worth more I'd take the Cougar any day. Great shape for a "Daily Driver" all those years.
Hi Rich McIntyre, Happy to read you enjoy this Cougar :-) Stay tuned, I have a few more Jungle Cats coming up I think you'll enjoy, Lou
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car. The car features the factory 390 CI V8 engine and 4 speed manual transmission.
Love the car young lady! Manual is the ONLY way!!You have FANTASTIC taste!!! Beautiful BEAUTIFUL car...I would kill for a true Eliminator!!! Much respect from the manual only owners out here!!! Im not goingvto get into one of my cars but i have a 427 Galaxy which I put a Richmond 5 speed in..I kept the stock manual but had to drop a 1 to 1 transmission in ...Especially with 4.10s..Im 44 and im not married nor have kids but I so have a 15,000 Sq Ft warehouse here on my 5 acres I live on in Golden Peak..Vail Colorado.. Soooo impressed with your car!! You have NO IDEA how much respect I have for you.You are the coolest young lady ive seen in a while!! 2 thumbs WAYYYYY UP!!!! Colin
High praise :-)
Nice! Wild how she's owned it for 50 years!
Hi Red 13, A good story for sure :-) Lou
51 years, ya. She cares. Had it restored only 5 years ago.
Excellent automotive sculpture...cars really made a statement in those days.
Hi Mike Vale, "Excellent automotive sculpture" Well said :-) Lou

Her tiltaway steering unit actually uses vacuum to operate. She may just have a vacuum leak due to bad lines, loose connection and or a bad vacuum motor. There are also kits available from WCCC that replace the vacuum-powered headlight doors with electrically powered motors.
Hi Matt's Kustom Kreations, Thank you for sharing your knowledge and a tip, Lou

Wow Lou an original '67 GT - rare ride! Is that the original paint?? It is impeccable. The 390 never really seems to get its due...a real powerhouse - ask Steve McQueen! Merc's were always a step-up! This car was gorgeous then...and it's gorgeous now. The old-girl has done it proud!
Hi Audie Conrad, Glad to receive a "Wow" from you and happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Stay tuned, there are a few more "Big Cats" coming up, Lou
Beautiful Cougar!
Glad to read you enjoy this car :-)
Makes me miss my 1968 Cougar very much badly!
I believe the quote was from Dr Seuss who said, "Don't be sad it's gone, but be glad it happened." That quote helps me with people or things I no longer have, and I hope it helps you too.
It's great when someone recognizes immediately that this is a special car, unfortunately many of us don't have that gift, and have lost the cars we love, and for car guys and girls, we all have a story, but not this young lady, good for her
Enjoyed reading your comment :-) Well said.
OMG perfect car. I dreamed of one of these as a boy.. sigh.. what a beauty.
Happy to read this is a "PURRRFECT" Black Cat for you :-)
@@loucostabile it is at that ! ;) thanks for sharing.

Очень. Очень. Очень красивый автомобиль как внешне так и в салоне.....Хозяева данного автомобиля молодцы что содержат это чудо в прекрастном состоянии. Это действительно неповторимо и очень прекрастно смотриться в наше время.
I'm going to need help replying to this comment.
