Aww, I love ''The Horses'' music video. Why is it blurred? I like Daryl's version. No, I love Daryl's version! RIP Margaret Urlich .. The accompanying singer.
This song was a co-write between Rickie Lee Jones and her producer at the time, Walter Becker of Steely Dan. Truth be told, it was Rickie Lee's song, with Walter suggesting the key change going into the chorus. New Zealand singer Margaret Urlich (sadly RIP) is singing the background vocals, although she doesn't appear in the promo clip (as she was in London at the time I think). Model Gillian Mather appears in the promo, miming Margaret's vocals. This was a last minute addition to Daryl's Rise album, the producer was looking for another song and Daryl had been listening to RLJ's Flying Cowboys album, so he brought The Horses in and was able to convince everyone to have it recorded and included on the album. It wasn't even released as the lead single, that was "Rise", but when it was released it went to #1. It's become something of a national phenomenon, almost a second national anthem, over the years. I'm a big DB fan and far prefer his recorded version over RLJ's. Whilst I love the recorded version, the live version I find to be too much as it gets dragged out for 10 or so minutes, turning it into one big singalong. It's one of those songs I get tired of hearing these days unfortunately. I feel for Daryl, when he is interviewed, he invariably gets asked about this song and this song only, with the interviewers seemingly forgetting all his work with Sherbet and his solo career. Sigh......
"The sunsets were purple and red and yellow and on fire, and the clouds would catch the colours everywhere. That's uh, neat 'cause I used to look at them all the time, when I was little. Full disclosure , I don’t regard it personally as a very good song in itself as I think it’s lacking in overall melody . Since “ Howzat” was my only contact with Daryll until just now all I knew was that he’d made a good job of that track and could potentially be a good singer but couldn’t prove it .. well his performance on here validates my original opinion of his singing ability , he’s done exceptionally well with what I consider a run of the mill ballad . So I prefer Darylls version . 👍🏴
I think most of Australia would agree with you on that one. It has become one of our iconic songs, which like ''You're The Voice'', wasn't actually written by an Aussie. 😆 The video clip for Daryl's ''Horses'' always makes my heart melt. The model in the video is not the woman doing the vocals. The accompanying vocals was done by the late Margaret Urlich, who was a Kiwi singer that was doing quite well in Australia at the time. She would die of cancer in 2022, and would express her regret in not appearing in Daryl's ''Horses'' video. I also wish she had appeared in the video with Daryl instead of that model.
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 aww it’s a shame Hayley then that video had to be blurred out . That Daryll certainly can sing . I don’t want to give the impression of “ the love that dare not speak it’s name “ 😆.. but I know a decent chanter ( singer ) when I hear one 👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering There were moments in his time in Sherbet where his voice irritated me. It could get a little whiny, as you might discover when the Haniers do other Sherbet songs. His voice was heard a little too often in Australia in the 70's, so I know songs where his voice gets grating. I think age and maturity improved his voice, which is why he was able to have such a successful solo career in Australia. He's also a down-to-earth friendly and modest guy that gets on with his job as a performer.

I loved ''Chuck E.'s In Love'' when it hit the Ozzie charts in 1979. Dad wisely decided not to buy me the first Ricky Lee Jones' album, because he knew I was too young to appreciate it and that I would only listen to one song - the hit. He instead bought me the single. I got to hear the album a few years later, and I liked it. The Ricky Lee Jones video you're thinking of, Chris, is ''The Real End''. That was one of her more interesting videos from around 1983.
Ricky Lee Jones version 1989 (Flying Cowboys album), Braithwaite version (C) 1990 (Rise album). So only a year between them for such a different production sound. I've never heard the Ricky Lee Jones version before and only know Braithwaite's version from living in Australia for 11 years through the 00's - so it's fair to say I prefer the latter because I'm familiar and as you say, production wise it sounds newer, more modern.
Chris and Cynthia, 'little darlings,' each rendition of the song has its own merits. Ricky's rendition with its soft beginning and pick up in the middle hit me more than Daryl's rendition. Daryl's rendition leaned more toward a 'rock vibe,' while Ricky's rendition could be pegged as having an 'alternative vibe.' This may be because of the 'bluesy' and 'folk' vibe that Cynthia mentioned. Daryl's rendition was more vocal, and went in and out of 'soft' to 'loud' and the chorus of both renditions gave the song its punch......
Daryl for me but I never liked him. My GF dragged me to a concert of his when this song came out😑 I’m thinking probably 1991(?) Daryl’s voice doesn’t really cut it but I feel the overall production and arrangement in his version is more engaging
Do not know much about Ricky Lee Jones but heard the name before. Have to admit, she can sing well, certainly a lot better than Johnathon Brown's version of this song but a little too jazzy for my liking so kind of a labour to listen to it in full. But I did notice both versions here were approached to be similar in style. It is a nice song but more a pleasure to listen to the Daryl Braithwaite version and the female backing singer really suited the song better. Interesting most of that version that backing singer more or less finishing the song off.

Hmmm… I rate Rickie as a great talent just based upon the only thing that I know of hers, which is her self-titled debut album from back in the 70s. That’s a fantastic album that I can’t recommend highly enough, especially on vinyl. I first heard The Horses via Darryl’s cover, and although I knew it was Rickie’s this is the first time I’ve heard her version. Unfortunately I think Darryl did it far better; Rickie’s version seemed to be disjointed between her vocal and the backing band, almost as if she did it on acoustic guitar and they then played along to it and then the guitar was dropped out of the mix. The band sounded great, but Rickie’s vocal didn’t sit on it. By comparison if you hear stuff like Danny’s All-Star Joint or Coolsville or Last-Chance Texaco they’re just totally complementary. I have to give it to the cover here. Special mention to Darryl’s backing vocals done by the superb Margaret Urlich. She has a wonderful song that was a hit here in Oz (and I’m sure in her native NZ) called Escaping. Well worth a listen.
I should also mention that they didn’t use Margaret in the video clip, so if you happen to look for her song don’t be surprised to see a very different, but still beautiful lady in the clip.
