  • Unboxing and review of the Juya quilling kit purchased from Amazon, containing 30 colors, 600 strips and 8 tools. Trying to decide on a beginner quilling kit to buy? So was I! There are a lot of kits on Amazon under $20 at the time of making this video, but there seem to be two main contenders - this Juya kit and another by Tuparka (which I reviewed in a different video). In this video, I unbox the Juya kit to show what's included, do a quilling project to test out the paper and tools, and then give my final thoughts on how the kit performed. I end with a quick opinion on how the Juya and Tuparka kits compare.
    I'll be making a full tutorial on how I made the letter A, coming soon!

    I bought this kit. You are so right.. It absolutely REEKS!!! I thought at first it was maybe the varnish on the printed pieces but I aired those out in the garage and the stink is coming from the template. The plastic template. It's soooo bad and I have ornery sinuses that just react so badly to strong smells like that. But the kit is awesome. As a beginner quiller- it's a great kit to hit the ground running. But man oh man does that template stink to high heaven. Phew!!! I don't know how long it will take to off gas, but it might have to either sit in the sun or garage or both for a while. Did yours ever stop stinking? I absolutely love your channel! Your voice is very relaxing and perfect tutorials like this. Thanks for sharing all you do!

      First of all, thanks for the awesome comment!
      Second, yes the kit finally quit its unholy stench...unfortunately I can't remember how long it took. Weeks? Months? I'm sure I lost brain cells because of it, but I sure love those paper strips!

    Thank you so much! Your videos are terrific. How do you store your quilling strips? They seem to be getting away from me lol!❤

      Those strips have a mind of their own sometimes! I try to keep them together as much as possible, pulling off strips as I need them. I also try to keep them in their original plastic sleeve and in the cardboard box they came in. That said, I've got a gallon sized bag full of scraps - lots of loose strips I didn't end up using in a project. These are really handy for figuring out what length you need without wasting a "real" strip.

    how does one know how long of a strip to use? or how much to cut down?

    • @annigancreates6074
      @annigancreates6074  3 года назад +2

      That is a good question. My answer is to try something and see if it's the size you want. YOU are the artist, with your own quilling style and rolling tightness. Try it, test an idea (but don't glue it down), decide if you like it. It's what i do all the time. Whatever i don't use, I'll save it in my scraps bag for another time.
      Most of my projects are small, so using a whole strip will create a pretty big piece. I know people will be working at different scales so I like to show the method and people can adjust size/color to fit what they're doing. Just go for it and make something - even if you don't use it, it'll help you get a feel for strip length vs. size.
      I read a suggestion that you could make your own chart, making a flower (or coil, or other shapes) with different length strips. Then you have something to refer to, and plus you get a lot of practice! Anyway, long answer, but hopefully that helps.

    What kit would you use? Like to start using quilling with my Calligraphy. Thanks kim

      Calligraphy plus quilling sounds beautiful. I've gotten a few quilling kits from amazon. I like the beginner kit by Juya shown in this video. It provides the basics and the paper strips are really nice colors. I also got a kit by Yurroad. It is more extensive and expensive but if they have a beginner quilling kit, I'd consider that one too.

    Thanks for the video. Can you share where you get your supplies from, including the card stock paper and what type of glue you use. Thank you.

      Sure thing! I use 60 lb cardstock for the background paper, purchased at Joann craft store. My glue is Aleene's tacky glue. The rest of my supplies for this particular video are from the Juya kit that I was testing out, purchased from Amazon. There is a link in the description if you are interested in checking it out.

    Thank you 😊 for this video, I appreciate it. What width of paper do you recommend for beginners?

    • @annigancreates6074
      @annigancreates6074  2 года назад +3

      I like working with 5mm strips. It's a common width that often comes in beginner quilling kits, and works well with most slotted tools. I find that the smaller the width, the more difficult it is to work with, but 5mm seems to be a good one for beginners.

      It's true! This is the same video, but with a few changes. I felt I should take out the Amazon screen shots in case they're copyrighted. Better safe than sorry, right? But that meant I had to delete the old video and do a whole new upload. It stinks that I couldn't just replace with a updated one. Sorry for the confusion!!

      I've got a few videos where I show how I make letter outlines. The great thing is you can use the procedure for any letter.
