Prog-metal is an acquired taste. Most metal fans can't even name 5 Dream Theater songs let alone 15, but most know PMU. Why? Because it sounds much closer to the mainstream metal of that era than much of their catalog. This is also why most Dream Theater fans diss the song -- it sounds too mainstream. I've been listening to these guys for 8 whole months now (almost 9) and this was the first ever song I listened to. I was mainly a Rush fan and I was really into the Test for Echo album but I wanted to listen to something heavier so I looked up bands similar to Rush and found these guys. While I was listening to the start of it I thought "the singer's probably going to come out and start screaming like in a death metal song" but I was really surprised when I heard LaBrie's voice is actually high-pitched. First of all I have to say I've become a big Dream Theater fan I was hooked on this album when it first came out and I bought it and I still have this CD to this very day excellent condition I might add these guys are musically trained and they can play anything that's offbeat in time in between and out of this world and the best of musicians I've seen or heard in my lifetime
So crazy to think this song was made before I was even born. For me it's a lifetime ago (I'm 24 now). So excited to see them for the first time this month with my husband.
1992 I was 20yrs old in college when this song hit MTV and got big. However by that time most rock/metal bands and music was phasing out of our culture and rap/hip hop was taking over. They never hit it quite as big as they would have had this song come in let's say mid/late 80s when rock ruled the world. I really really feel for you young folks, especially if you're white and into rock. It's a hip hop world nowadays. But at least you have the Internet to look back and see how good my genX had it.
Just yesterday a hippie kid came to me while bartending needing to sell me a “electric guitar” he wanted $40 for gas money so busy bar and all I ran out to he car to see what he had. I bought it and after looking into it its a music man JP 50 (John’s Signature axe) not being a previous dream theater fan that brought me here to check them out. Being a tool fan how have I never checked these guys out?!? Wow. Surely happy for the right place at the right time moment that led me here. A whole lot of badassery in a couple days time.
First heard this when I was 13 in fall of 1993, first day of middle school sharing Koss 'phones with a buddy's Walkman. I was so blown away that same day I went to Ameoba Records and picked up the Images and Words cassette, along with When Dream and Day Unite. That night I listened to the whole record, and loved Ytse Jam. Since then I've been a fan for life.

First time I heard this song & watched the video in '93 on headbangers ball, I thought I was witnessing sorcery. These guys are still going & as strong as ever. Maybe I was right..
The double bass in this is so clean and smooth. It's not as fast as some stuff today, but it's so clean and tasteful. The simplicity makes it so infectious.
The first song of the best album ever written... but damn, what a hack job on the editing! I saw Images & Words live in 1992 at a small club in San Jose, CA. It was the best show I've ever seen. Long live Dream Theater!
It was 1992 when my friend Luca, one sunny day of a still shy spring, rang at my door. He gave me the headphones of the Walkman and said "Listen to this". And my concept of music was never the same again. that many still begin to feel and love today.
I remember when Images & Words was released. Pull Me Under received some limited radio airplay at the time of its release. I'm so glad that Pull Me Under was played on the radio because it was my first introduction to Dream Theater. Images & Words was released in 1992 and I was so excited to discover a new Prog Rock band. Remember, Nevermind by Nirvana and Ten by Pearl Jam were released a year earlier in 1991, two albums that ushered in the Grunge era. I don't really have anything against Grunge, but it was very different from the Rock I had grown to love. At the beginning of high school, a friend of mine had introduced me to real Hard Rock and Metal. I began listening to bands like Metallica and Anthrax. He also introduced me to Queensrÿche with the release of Operation Mindcrime. Later, when Empire was released in 1990 I was already familiar with the band. Everyone was listening to Empire. Queensrÿche achieved commercial success with that album. So, after Grunge sprung onto the scene and was playing everywhere on Rock radio, hearing Pull Me Under was amazingly refreshing. After hearing Pull Me Under for the first time, I rushed out to buy Images & Words. I probably listened to Pull Me Under 1000 times and shared it with all my friends. I listened to Images & Words so many times. Pull Me Under was absolutely epic, I couldn't get enough of it. Another Prog Rock track would not strike me the way Pull Me Under had done until 2005. That track is Welcome Home by Coheed & Cambria. I feel lucky to have seen Dream Theater in concert as may times as I have. I loved seeing Dream Theater at small venues like The Warfield in San Francisco.
I first saw/heard this song on MTV when it came out in 1992. I was 14, a drummer and a huge Metallica fan. I instantly fell in love with this sound and the band. Sufficed it to say, this sound completely changed my approach to drumming and my interest in music in general.
To me, the best part of this vid, aside from the music, is LaBrie wearing the Napalm Death T-Shirt. James and Barney kicked ass on Cemetery Gates and Damage Inc., but back when this came out, only us true believers really knew....
great lyrics - EXISTENTIAL in art and tears and a lightness of knowing our insignificance and finding it a hug , a breath of air ----------- this refrain, the melody, and those lyrics are to literally die for - good for you, writer , awesome
What an incredibly talented band. Everyone of them is a superior musician. I prefer vocals in more of a baritone range and don't really care for that style of operatic singing, but still incredibly talented.
While in Germany with the Army I had a buddy lend me this album. I came in late one night totally plastered and listened to this cranked with headphones on. I passed out and tipped backward in my chair unplugging the headphones and blasting my roommate who kindly got me up and into my bunk.
This song always remember me a friend of mine who committed suicide. Years later I tried too but I was not successful. Now I have many reasons to live... R.I.P. Samudio.

I just showed my pops this song, he loves it. It’s actually one of his favorite songs now. Unfortunately he’s terminally ill, when he eventually passes on I will always think of him and how much he actually loves this tune. Happy I could show him one song we share the same love for ❤
My guitar teacher was a GIT grad with two music degrees. Dream Theater was his favorite band. Enough said!
I am the same age as the members of Dream Theater at the time of this songs release. I look at Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci and think...damn did I look that young too ? Holy hell they all still rock out all these years later.
aman jaman sekolah, memiliki kaset Dream Theater itu Keren.
Era dimana jam Istirahat orang kaya menggunakan HPnya buat mutar lagu Dream Theater.
dan semua bernyanyi Pull me Under Pull me Under dengan gaya memegang Sapu.
0:13 - Though accidental, that bit with the candles, book, and watch gives me heavy Final Fantasy VI vibes, and I love it.
Nice🎉
Mike Portnoy IS BACK in Dream Theater!!! SO Happy!!!
For some weird reason, this band slipped under my radar. I used to be a big Queensryche fan, and this group seems to have some of that flavor.
check out the album with the dude on a unicycle on a tightrope int he skyh i forget what it's called but it's the best album ever
@@weefek A Dramatic Turn Of Events?
If you like Queensryche, then you should listen to Dream Theater's first album, When Dream and Day Unite.
^
There's a whole genre of it. Check out Conception.
Personally it holds atmosphere of 90s and 2000s ... cool song, listen on repeat but not annoying 🤘🏻that’s mean good stuff!
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Same.❤
Just yesterday a hippie kid came to me while bartending needing to sell me a “electric guitar” he wanted $40 for gas money so busy bar and all I ran out to he car to see what he had.
How beautiful is this song. The lyrics ❤
Since then I've been a fan for life.
i bet that evERy thumbs down came from people who like nikelback and foo fighters.....after all these years DREAM THEATER STILL NEVER ARE SELL-OUTS..NEVER GAVE IN TO MAKING HIT SINGLES FOR THE RECORD COMPANIES!!! THATS WHY THEY ARE STILL....AFTER ALL THESE YEARS...MY FAVORITE BAND!!!!
Whats the problem with foo fighters?
I like dream theater and foo fighters too!😕
What a great addition to the band Labrie was. So good!
The vocals are just insane !! 🤘
i swear, dream theater are one of the greatest bands i have ever had the pleasure of listening to...such an amazing band:)
1:29 just brings me so much joy, I don’t know why
I remember hearing this for the first time, and luckily I recorded it on vhs, and watching it over and over. Then I bought the cd and heard the uncut version and my head exploded.
Супер вещь! Сколько лет прошло,но до сих пор будоражит! Хочется летать!!) Брависсимо!🤘
The intro is really interesting to hear compared to the non-edited version of the song. They must have cut at least half of it?
Jonatan OTW the original version is more than 3' longer (not just because of the intro xD)
Yeah, they cut it a little, and it sounds better to me. The original intro is too long.
They have to shorten it for mainstream audiences who have short attention spans lol
More than for modern audiences, they shortened it for radio play. It's hard to get an 8 minute song on radio, you know?
totally disagree, they cut most of the part, totally castrated the song, ceasing the good build up
My God I haven't heard this one for a minute it's still it's nice to know that this song still sounds good after all these years rock on dude
This has to be one of the best rock songs ever! I'm loving the drum
They are so over the top. Amazing, though. Brilliant musicians. It remind me of classical music in it's richness and complexity.
Petrucci is a classically influenced guitarist
Very underated Band. I'm still introducing this song (and Band) to people. Where the hell has these people been that never heard from these massively talented musician's?
Hello David
@@jacksonmcleod9708 Hello how are you doing?
1:22 just yeaaaaaaah!
Hell yeah😈
2:46 on "dust fills my eyes".....one of the greatest hooks in all of rock & roll - ever!
every time i listen dream theater i wait to hear john' s solos and melodic chords my fav. parts, amazing guitarist one of my guitar idols ,when i was about 17-18 years old i bought images and words for guitar and i played almost every part of the album, amazing solos amazing technique thank you john
this song is a masterpiece
Remember jamming to this song on the school bus on the way home from school lol! Was the newest and most original thing I had ever heard! Been a fan ever since.
A new Dream Theater fan when RUclips played this straight after one of my daughter's band's I AEMON tracks........soooo Avantasia too and just love it. Thanks I AEMON for bringing me here lol.
The drumming is phenomenal!!!! Always loved this song! ❤ Takes me wayyyy back!!!!
First time I heard this song & watched the video in '93 on headbangers ball, I thought I was witnessing sorcery. These guys are still going & as strong as ever. Maybe I was right..
Uma recordação da minha juventude em plenitude com esta obra magnífica do Metal Progressivo. 💙🔥
Just got tickets in the 2nd row for Houston. I am JACKED because I've never seen them !!!!!!
SEEN THEM 4 TIMES!!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!! for me...APRIL 17TH NASHVILLE!!! MY 5TH TIME!!!!!......enjoy my bruddah!!!!!!!
How was the show?
This takes me back when music was amazing. First heard this when I was 12 years old. Love it to this day. ❤
Still the best thing they have ever done. Awesome song.👌
so this year this masterpiece turns 30! wow! Still sounds great (I prefer the normal 8 minutes version)
Total 80s rock voice! Very fine!
The double bass in this is so clean and smooth. It's not as fast as some stuff today, but it's so clean and tasteful. The simplicity makes it so infectious.
It's like the 80's today!! Love it :)
The first song of the best album ever written... but damn, what a hack job on the editing! I saw Images & Words live in 1992 at a small club in San Jose, CA. It was the best show I've ever seen. Long live Dream Theater!
How come I've never heard of these guys? This is awesome!
Welcome to the dream world)
True metal.
The band is phenomenal!!!
Incredible Band! Hi! LARA from Argentina!!🇦🇷🙌🙌🇦🇷kisses brothers
Cuando descubre buena música gracias a Shaun😉
Veronica Paco y eso que el solo escucho los primeros discos. Los que siguen están fenomenales 🤘🏻
Metal genial!
But putea a Mastermildb :(
Aun recuerdo cuando escuchaba este tema siendo un niño!
Saludos!
Yo también la acabo de conocer por Shaun
Ya hasta me la estoy aprendiendo
I first saw/heard this song on MTV when it came out in 1992. I was 14, a drummer and a huge Metallica fan. I instantly fell in love with this sound and the band. Sufficed it to say, this sound completely changed my approach to drumming and my interest in music in general.
Uma relíquia dessa não pode cair no esquecimento nunca...
The drumming is out of this world, probably one of the greatest drum piece 😮
Mike become the knight recommended dream theater and here I am 🤘🏼
They play amazing live as well.
San Pevo chech out the song the glass prison, a nightmare to remember, and panic attack :]
San Pevo same man
Me as well
yo that's how I got into Dream Theater too, nice
i was listening to BOC and I never knew how much this guy sound s like old recordings of BOC. Keeping up the Progrock. Love it.
Mi mejor canción que e conocido en toda la vida y es impresionante y me encantó
I heard Pull Me Under by Dream Theater yeserday around after 1 am to 3 am. Best song and band.
To me, the best part of this vid, aside from the music, is LaBrie wearing the Napalm Death T-Shirt. James and Barney kicked ass on Cemetery Gates and Damage Inc., but back when this came out, only us true believers really knew....
ENOUGH SAID ..MY TRUE DREAM THEATER BRUDDAH!!!! YOU ARE WISE BEYOND YOUR YEARS!!!!
great lyrics - EXISTENTIAL in art and tears and a lightness of knowing our insignificance and finding it a hug , a breath of air ----------- this refrain, the melody, and those lyrics are to literally die for - good for you, writer , awesome
I like this version but I Prefer The 8 and half minutes version
AlexArteaga.12 yeah I believe it was cut too short at parts
this is the radio friendly version
@@MrLeprachaun666 this is the MTV version, the radio version is 5:54
Yeah live at budokan version. Budokan to me better DVD and álbum for understand essence of band was in DVD that i stayed fan.
The key solo was dissapeared :( I hate this version
here we are 2024 with 2025 approaching fast, what a rush to be raised during the metal era never let it end
What an incredibly talented band. Everyone of them is a superior musician. I prefer vocals in more of a baritone range and don't really care for that style of operatic singing, but still incredibly talented.
Everyone wants to sound like Eddie Vedder or Chad Kroeger......but I understand.
Yes!
While in Germany with the Army I had a buddy lend me this album. I came in late one night totally plastered and listened to this cranked with headphones on. I passed out and tipped backward in my chair unplugging the headphones and blasting my roommate who kindly got me up and into my bunk.
The bassline in the beginning is just🔥
Happy Birthday John Ro Myung, born January 24th 1967,in Chicago,Illinois, bass player of DT,great player
Mike Portnoy- level 8000 legendary drummer .
Maxed out perks
Maxed stats
Chill guy
I reject the premise that it is humanly possible to dislike Dream Theater. How does one even dislike a band as amazing at them?
This song always remember me a friend of mine who committed suicide. Years later I tried too but I was not successful. Now I have many reasons to live... R.I.P. Samudio.
❤
♥️
My condolences
❤️
Glad you didn't succeed
Omg this band is one of my favorites, made my father watch these guys before he passed, he actually liked this
Excelente banda 😎
Love these guys. Did a light show for them back in the late 90's.❤
