A New Orleans legend. My folks and I had the pleasure to hang out with this man during a lunch at his restaurant during the 1984 World's Fair. It was a cold and overcast day...not very many people went to the Fair that day. We went to his place for lunch, and there was only one other group there. Pete and his band performed, and he hung out with the other group for a while, and then our little family. Hands down one of the best moments of my life...my dad and Pete Fountain trading stories.
You and me both! He's the only famous clarinet player that has recorded all styles of music, dixie, coutry and western, pop, swing and with the symphony and all very good. It only took me about 35 years to duplicate his unmistakable tone.
I just returned from New Orleans for my birthday, from Houston. I love the city..long may it live. Great people and great vibes post Katrina. NOLA is back!
love Pete Fountain's music....have listened for years....and never get tired of it. Could list over and over again and again. It's such happy music......
I was the only kid in our South Bend, Indiana high school band who had a crystal mouthpiece. I wanted to be just like Pete! That was 1957. I still have the container it came in today. It was an Obrien and cost $12.99 then. I actually had two of them because I accidentally hit my tooth with it one day in band and found out how easily they chipped.
Pete Fountain lost a lot of his prized possessions due to hurricane Katrina. He had a place in Bay St. Louis. He is one of the greatest. We miss the old New Orleans, it will never be the same.
would somebody please BRING BACK THE CLARINET! What happened? Where are the Benny Goodmans and Pete Fountains today? This is sweet stuff! Thanks for posting the vid!
These guys make it sweet. What an unbelievable achievement of exellence. The musicianship is the finest. Thank you again Jim for putting Pete on youtube for all of us to enjoy. Have a great night!
completely agree almost all my family had to move b/c of katrina my grandparents lost their house and everything in it i mover b4 but i still cry b/c i've always wanted to go back but now even if i do itll never be the same i miss it so much...
To my knowledge he still plays a 4* O'Brien Glass mouthpiece today. The clarinet he plays is an older 15mm bore LeBlanc 1612G, the G stands for gold keys. The 1612 model LeBlanc has forked Bb and articulated G# keys. Your series 9 is also a 15mm bore clarinet and a very good clarinet, I used to own one years ago. Jim
My father played with a lot of the musicians Pete played with. When Pete had a gig in Florida, he would stop at our place in Fairhope, AL and give us some of his home made cracklin.
i know him too he is some how related in the family through stepdad i dont even try anymore to keep track of how that link is lol. i litteraly ran into him at the wedding. at least he was kewl. i didnt realize it was him till much later.ill have to call my dad and see if he has jazz fest schecule
@sattakhim Unfortunately for those of us who would like to see this amazing work on paper, it is in large part improvised on the spot from a skeleton of chord progressions and basic melody...
Jack Normand-he was the orchestra leader at the Grand Hotel (now a Marriott) in Point Clear, AL from 1941 until WWII. Then he came back in 1951 and was there 40 years. My brothers carried on the band for another 10 yrs. See my site grandband click on "History" for pics and music
WELL COME JOIN MY BAND! Erm.. wait. I don't have a band yet. 8-( But at least, your comment is encouraging. You gotta LOVE THAT CLARINET! p.s. Found this album on iTunes. Is STUNNING!

Do you know what it means to miss Pete Fountain! New Orleans will miss him dearly!! R.I.P. Pete!
AS PETE always said "I speak with my horn" and he is the most eloquent speaker of all with that horn.

Met Mr. Fountain in the lobby of The Roosevelt Hotel once, he played the Blue Room. A real class act, a true man of Jazz. R.I.P.

You can play but your tone is yours as mine is mine.

Great jazz musician! Always let his accompaniment take solos without interrupting them. We will miss his clarinet and his personality.

I'm transported by a mellow clarinet to a place and time that the world will probably never see again - but it should.

I agree. All we're left with today is primarily the so-called "3-chord merchants", flashing laser light shows and fireworks.
