      I had a girlfriend who had a green cheek. He constantly made kinda quiet noise; basically whenever he was awake he made conversational little chatter. Every now and again he would get a wild hair (feather?) and start screaming.

    I met a conure in a pet shop who was amazing. You'd walk up to him, and he'd immediately try to get your attention by flashing his colors. When he was sure he had your attention, he'd hop down to the ground and start spinning around like Curly from the Three Stooges. And as soon as you started to laugh, he'd stand right up, and bob his head up and down and make a decent approximation of a laugh sound.
    Pretty amazing personality for a little chicken with the brain the size of a (small) pea.

He says many words and phrases including ‘Dickweed’ ‘How you doing?’ ‘I’m a good boy’ ‘Hey’ ‘What you doing’ ‘Whaaat’ ‘Poop’ ‘Hello’ ‘I’m a dickwack’. My first bird and he is amazing.

    I have a green cheek and I can agree that these little birds get rehomed quite often. I got mine from an elderly couple who never did anything with her. She basically sat in a small cage all day and was never socialized. Due to this she is very cage territorial, but generally pleasant out of it. Unfortunately, due to how her first years were spent, she does tend towards being quite bitey. I can handle her, but nobody else.

    First may I say I had to have a notebook ready for the *THIRD* time I watched this to try and educate myself. This video is perfect for someone with *ADHD*! As soon as I got to know one type of bird another popped up with new info. But it wasn't conure, conure, conure, conure,..
    No! It was Macaw, Parakeet, conure, parrotlet (sp?), parakeet, conure, conure, etc etc etc.. It felt like a hurricane of information!! I hope she doesn't teach classes. I'm kidding. I know RUclips makes you be brief. It's alot to take in. Thank you so much for the information though!
    I have a conure named Finn who looks kinda like the pineapple she showed us. But he is called a cinnamon fallow. Which aparently is rare. We didn't know till we bought him as a baby. He's also a naughty boy. Her conure grabbed her hair at 6:12
    Mine does the same thing. I wish I could classify mine like how she broke it down with all my birds info.

    Some of my favorite memories of the San Francisco zoo (also some of the most nerve wracking) are those of feeding the lorikeets. You would walk through an antechamber, pick up a cup of "nectar" and go into the net-roofed lorikeet habitat and wait for the birds to land on you and partake of your offering.

    I loved this instalment seeing as I have two Conures! Buddy is a 5 year old Green Cheek, and then I have Kiwi who is a 6 month old Pineapple Green Cheek. Buddy has been able to talk for years, he likes to tell us to 'stop it' when we are not paying enough attention to him or he wants to be picked up and put inside our shirts. Kiwi on the other hand just picked up saying 'step up', the same thing I say to her every time I want her to climb on my finger. These birds are smart, they have their own little personalities and keep you on your toes. They are a big commitment, but they are rewarding little companions.

      You may have been kidding but I whipped up a graph for you (link at the bottom of the comment). Conures are a type of new world parrot, while parakeet isn't technically a taxonomic classification, but usually describes a long-tailed parrot.
      Old world parrots cannot be conures but they can be parakeets (since parakeet is a physical definition, not a taxonomic one. Does that make sense?
      Here's a link to my graph, with the cladogram stolen from some paper somewhere. I got it through Google images. i.imgur.com/Sm7t9ba.png

      Wonderful video. I shared it with my Red throated Conure, who's name is Perfect. He loved it, and showed why conures can be so loud. He wasn't the only conure who was a member of our family, we had also had a jencap conure (a combination of a jenday and a golden cap), but she passed away.

    Wow you have a big Macaw! My husband's family has a blue and yellow Macaw and theirs just seems much smaller than Joy. It is crazy how long they can live, and how they can really feel like family members. Their Macaw will say hello or goodbye when people come and go, will help people call someone to dinner, and will even laugh if someone drops something or stubs their toe! (She has sort of a dry sense of humor, haha) They are a bit needy, maybe even as needy as dogs since they need interaction and social companionship just like dogs. Love all the awesome birds you guys have!

    I understand why Jessi has these birds as they are rescues, but please, if you are considering getting a bird, DONT!!! These birds are not made to be pets and are used to flying dozens of miles every day when in the wild. They just can't do that when locked up inside a house.

    • @UrbanPanic
      @UrbanPanic 10 лет назад +22

      But if you are really set on one, at least consider adopting from a rescue group. A good rescue will be motivated to spend the time to find the proper bird for your home, and give plenty of advice for successfully bringing them into your home.

      So true, like having a pet dolphin stuck in a tank is also sad. Only for rescued animals, not captured wild animals. Birds as normal pets makes no sense and is mean. Come to think of it, fish tanks are pretty horrible things, too. Poor fish.
      Human love = lock you up in a cage and keep you for ever and ever!

      This, this, this. I only know one person (personally) whom I would consider qualified to own parrots, and they are her entire world. She's spent her whole life working for parks, rescues, and zoos, so she knows just how smart they are and how much care they need - and that they will probably outlive her.

    • @rocrane4153
      @rocrane4153 9 лет назад +3

      Dino Fan The only way to reliably fix this problem is to only adopt from rescues, not to purchase from breeders. Purchasing them only encourages the pet trade. It's a horrible situation but one that we need to make tough choices over a long period of time to fix. We caused this problem, so we need to fix it.

    I purchased a Blue Crowned Conure when I was 17. Pre internet, I had no clue. Bird talk magazine helped. He (or she) was such a wonderful bird. Not hand fed but would say 'Thats good' when he wanted food. 'Give me kiss' when he wanted love or to bite you. Had to read body language Said night night when he wanted to go to bed, screamed when I came home from work, had to love him........I miss Verde bird.

    Very helpful lesson. I have a red-winged parrot which was labelled as a parakeet when I bought him 20 years ago. When I was a child we has a half moon conure. They are amazing animals but I don't think most people know how to properly care for them, especially the really large birds.

    I love this video. I have a pineapple green cheek myself, and she's not too vocal. But it's so important to raise awareness about how (as you said) "overly-exploited and under-appreciated" these birds are. They're so smart, and social, and beautiful, and neglected - and so many people adopt or buy conures (and parrots in general, but that's a whole other topic) without truly understanding what it takes to care for them. Especially ones with special needs, like Ginger.
    This video fills me with joy!
