- Here you have the ending to the game, which occurs directly after the end of the last video. It's rather long, but it's still good IMO. It wraps up things nicely.
If you just want to watch the ending...ending...skip to 24:00.
Just in case it isn't clear, Vivi is the one narrating during the scenes. A lot of people assume it's Zidane or Garnet/Dagger, but it's not. It is also heavily implied that Vivi died, or "stopped", the proper term when the Black Mages die. It matches his narrating and why he's absent from the entire final scenes.
Also a little easter egg, if you have the Hammer in your inventory (finish the Stellazzio sidequest), you'll get a small bonus scene which you see here. Nothing special, but it throws a random reference to the main characters of FFVII & FFVIII (Cloud & Squall).

I was devastated once I learned that the on-screen text was Vivi's dying words. Shit happened a decade after I beat the game. Still killed me.

I just played this 2 decades later and completed it 4 times, and it didnt hit me until I thought of it....
@@Enarjay7891 Apparently its obvious in the Japanese text. It uses certain pronouns and "quirks" that only Vivi uses. So yes, he died :(

Yes.. Guys , you know the last monologue saying farewell was from Vivi right.. He has stopped moving , Garnet’s hair is long again, and Alexandria has rebuilt. so Zidane probably missing for around 1 or 2 years.. Every character was shown in the ending , except Vivi.. the one shown was his “kids” and none of them remembers Puck.
In memoria was stated that things has made lot of stir ups since 10 years ago (the time when Kuja’s plot in Gaia was started). Mr 288 also said older type of black mage like Vivi last longer.. while newer types like Mr 288 last for 2 years. so in total Vivi probably has lived about 12 or 13 years. Vivi confirmed it in Bran Bal when he was saying that those teenage looking Genomes are about his age. If that so, Vivi probably has same expiration year with Mr 288.
Since the mist is back again during disc 4, and Mikoto lives in black mage village.. it is possible that she the smart one helps black mages to reproduce Vivi “kids” using mist.. Similar to what Garland did to Genomes , Mikoto also said eventhough Kuja was evil he still brings them hope.. by putting meaning for their existence even though it’s not what they were made for. Plus also, Kuja succeed on applying Terra’s producing system and set example on how to produce black mages in Gaia.
Note : Vivi is watching from above at 26:13 , exactly on the right side of the shining sword.
This game is so beautifully made and written.
Do not forget, no matter how heartbreaking it is, it’s still a fiction. Peace out ✌️

This is the most beautiful ending ever in the history of video games. This game has taught me a lot. I am glad to have known this scene. Final Fantasy 9 will always be in my heart :)

the one who did the monologue IS Vivi. because in the original japanese version of the game, the monologue speaker uses a speech pattern and pronouns that only Vivi used throughout the game. so sadly yes, Vivi really is dead, or "stopped"

The first part with Mikoto in the background walking is indeed Mikoto, but the second part with black screen is Vivi.

I always imagine that Kuja survived somehow and Zidane spent his time with him until he died, before returning to Alexandria.
For those saddened by the fact that Vivi is dead. There is a nice memorial of him with wings on alexandria castle just as Steiner and Beatrix raise the Save the Quenn sword. Its hard to spot but look closely its him watching over his friends

His time ran out, those were vivi's clones/sons and you can see the "vivi's pointy hat in the sky at the end" and they say even vivi watching over them, when steiner and beatrix are raising the sword.
Also in the japanese ending, his talking on the ending is the same as the game(for example in the italian version, he used to s-s-s-s-say thing like t-t-that) :)
I've discovered about Vivi's death, like 10 years later the game...i first played it on the 2002/3.
This game is a pearl, the ending and the vivi's death beat 1000to0 Final Fantasy 7.
I think that is not vivi memorial. Its a symbol of the eidolon Alexander that is basically an eidolon hidden within the castle. And yes it is vivi's monologue in the end. After all the game made it obvious that he would "stop moving" or died someday just not as fast as the others but as you can see there is a lot of vivi in the audience so it is possible that creating more vivi base on the original is now possible. Knowing that the other vivi's could finally live a long time as him will surely make the original vivi happy wherever he is.
That moment when Dagger jumps into Zidane's arms... damn that brings tears to the eyes every time. One of the many reasons this is my favorite FF game... and always will be.
Ff9 ending as well as FFX always made me cry. That's why I loved these games so much ❤️

Even though Aerith is my favourite FF character. Nothing makes me sadder than Vivi's implied death. Even thinking about it leaves me with a huge lump in my throat. WHY VIVI WHYYYY?

Me too. It's kind of funny, when the Zidane is looking up ay the airship, it looks just like the art of Aerith, when she's looking up at the airship in one of the arts from FF7.

Vivi life limit already expired the moment Alexandria finally repaired from the damage left by Kuja assault, it is implied that his soul is used to create his sons. The question is how they were created since no more mist after destruction of Iifa tree, thus no more black mage golem anymore. Cid cannot create the black mages since he doesn't know about the technology to create it.

Oluf The Explorer I think Dissidia Final Fantasy worked that to its advantage. It kinda makes sense because they fought together and all the protagonists were taken from different points of their own story. Just a thought but I finally realized it might be the case after playing Dissidia and remembering that line.

But it’s a double meaning since they’re saying clouds and squalls can’t stop them, and in case you didn’t know a “squall” is a real word that means a large gust of wind that brings violent weather, which comes from clouds
He dies. It is implied in the text where Puck meets his son. Vivi knew that he would soon come to a stop; and he just accepted his fate. Vivi taught me that life's not about the destination; it's about the journey. This what makes this game truly amazing.

Vivi is also my favorite, in fact my most beloved character of final fantasy series. He's immortal for me, he had cameos in other games and universe.
Notice that Kuja stopped moving right before all those vines and roots came slamming down on them. He was already dead, and Zidane was trying to protect his lifeless body out of brotherly devotion.
Just beat ff9 for the first time just a few moments ago... what an amazing game with a truly beautiful ending. Dagger running towards Zidane was cute as hell

Just managed to get it on my PC - haven't played for about 10-11 years - I'm 22 now - I won't lie, nostalgia + this story = many manly tears were shed. This is by far and away my favorite game I have ever, and probably will ever play.

With the Doomsday absorb dark set up he is a very impresive healer fore a black mage. I just finished the game (just the main story) and he and Eiko with her Phoenix summon where the MVPs during the finale.
Other people can disagree but i dont care, Vivi's death is the most depressing death in the series, Worse than Tellah, Golbez, Galuf, and Aerith combined

This is simply the most beautiful love story of all times. It touches heart when Zidane show himself and Garnet runs to him the fastest she can.
I think he still held on to the belief that Zidane is still alive, and died knowing he'll come back. So, I'm sure he had no regrets. Still sad though :C

And when I played the game,Vivi was actually my first favorite.

The best ending for any game I ever played. Nothing comes close. It is just the perfect happy ending. It was sad that Vivi died but black mages die very young. At least he had kids.

14 years later this still my favorite story of all time. Really wish they'd remake the game hd rerender all char models and redraw backdrops for high res and remaster soundtrack like they did ffx. Man.
Improve the damn framerates too, the transition from background to battle is still atrocious.

24:00 Best moment in all FF. Seriously. This game just has it all, and with a surprisingly dark story dampened a smidge by whimsical design, this managed to pull off the perfect happy ending. Everyone gets such a fitting end, Vivi's is bittersweet, as is Freya's, but damn - when Zidane makes that dramatic reveal I can't help but have a huge grin. The happy ending doesn't feel cheesy as many do; these characters deserve it, as does the player. Song of Memories is a song I'll never forget.
Vivi hit my heart hard, and left a legacy in my life. Live life to the fullest, always seeking to do the best, whether for yourself or those you love, no matter how much time you have left. We must know how to take advantage of the moments we have, because we don't know what comes after that, but learn not to fear the unknown. This is the teaching I take for life, through this incredible character that was Vivi.

No matter how many time passes, from VI to IX, I will have a special little room in my heart for these games... They gave me so much fun and joy playing them the first time, that it was like my oasis in those years... but I have to say it, because it is like it is: from those 4, this romance is, without a doubt, the best of them all ( the only one that could made me cry like a baby drown in happiness) (still makes my eyes teary T.T )

It's not Vivi's death that's devastating, it's that he never got to say goodbye to Zidane and died thinking Zidane was dead.

some people are saying the time skip is a few months.. but its about two years id say.. and i came to this conclusion cuz the average young healthy persons hair grows 6 inches a year.. daggers hair went from shoulder length to butt length. so on her height thats at least a foot. so at least two years passed since zidane left...
Writing this comment at the game's 20th anniversary. Still makes me cry, oh vivi. 😭 The music, the characters, and the ending... Everything is amazing.
Nothing to be ashamed of, i came home from Marine Basic training back in the day and my brother was finishing the game. Same feeling of nostalgia and Many Manly tears. Now i am going to go dig this bad boy up again

Thanks for uploading this so long ago lol. My PC version crashed after Zidane said "I'mma go get Kuja" and watched the airship leave (it crashed after the cutscene finished). This was much longer than I expected the end to be lol.
When "Some time later..." appears on the screen and the music starts, i always immediately start crying. I'm a 30 year old man crying alone in his apartment on a sunday afternoon. Wtf broooo.
Oh my goodness.... Vivi dies??? my heart just stopped! The best character in the game period! Heck one of the best in the whole series.... wow... it took my this long... the ending was super cute. I like how square gave a quick throwback love to 7&8! And I liked how the game started with the play and ended with the play. Great game!!!
During the Beatrix and Steiner scene, just before the monologue continues, you can see Beatrix starting to run towards Steiner... as if she wants to hug him...

I always thought the ending monologue was pronounced by Garnet/Dagger, but now I´m not so sure. I have read endless explications branching from different believable theories, and even though the general concensus is to rely on self interpretation, I crave for concrete evidence evrytime I play this game... which probably speaks loudly on how one of its central themes (paradoxical call for impossible resolution, I´d say) has impacted my life. This ending is beautiful but it tears my heart right back to when I was 11 as I looked to the screen and looked at "The End" words and listened to the prelude for 39 minutes, torn by grief and light-heartness...
In my opinion, the best storyline ever creates for a game.
I think there is suppose to be a kissing scene on the last part. XD
Interesting thing to think, as Cid and Helda have adopted Eiko, and her calling them dad and mom, that means in the future Eiko will be queen regent of Lindblum.
And thinking how possibly Eiko might be Garnets cousin or even sister, having them as rulers and family is pretty cute!

When I was a kid, I once did a silly playthrouh where my characters were named really odd things. And I made the ending really silly (...to a 14 year old me) because I named Vivi "idiot" and made Puck say "Wow! Look at all the idiots!"

I finally get to see the ending, I had the ps1 version and every time I beat the final boss, and Zidane and the gang would warp out the screen would turn white and stay that way. It never showed the ending cut scenes and credits...a bad cd disk I guess.
Agreed. This remains not only my favorite RPG, but also my favorite game overall to this day. It's absolutely timeless.

I've played through Final Fantasy 9 once a year, every year, since the game released. I always find something new to love about it.
Played ff9 about 20 times until 2006/2007, until PS1 became obsolete I haven't played it since 🥲

@@taroupriapus9760 Sorry for the late reply! Unfortunately I never played the original so I can't comment on that, but the graphics did look much better based on the comparisons I've seen! I don't think that much has changed, but I can't be too sure!
I really love the ending to this. Although the way Zidane showed up was pretty expectable, it was wonderfully executed.

This is the most beautiful ending in gaming history. Nothing even comes close. That look on Garnet's face when she sees Zidane. It just says so much. "How DARE you leave me alone!" "Do you have any IDEA how empty my world is without you?!" Then after pounding his chest... "I understand. I really do. But you are NEVER to leave me again!"
