HOW THE FUNK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD IS FIGHTING TO KEEP ITS LEGACY ALIVE IN DAYTON OHIO! Stephen StarrJUN 19 2019. When Dayton’s The Funk Music Hall of Fame & Exhibition Center - aka TheFunkCenter - opened in December 2017, locals delighted in it marrying a proud musical tradition with hope for the revival of a city long down on its luck. Built to celebrate the Ohio city’s reputation as ground zero of the funk world, the center drew volunteers and experts from the Netherlands, Japan and the U.K. and superstar names from Dayton’s 1970s and ’80s funk scene, who pieced together the decades-old instruments, records and memorabilia on display. Unfortunately Wayne Cooper, who was from Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away from AIDS many years ago. He had a falling out with Larry Blackmon, who was allegedly jealous of his vocal prowess and the thunderous responses he received from audiences. After Wayne, Blackmon took the front because in his view Cameo was his band and no one was going to overshadow him.
I remember Wayne at rehearsals . He was full of life and an outstanding singer. When he sang you could see the audience just rise. Yes his vocals couldn’t be touched by anyone. I was a kid at the time and I remember just that. He always spoke to me with a smile. That’s what I remember about him. He passed with grace and dignity!!!
Tomi Jenkins and cameo one of the best to ever do it i wish Tv one would do a episode on Cameo.
I absolutely love Tomi Jenkins vocals. Thank you for being such an intricate part of the band Cameo. Love you.
