Here's a video on how to be stylish in 2018. I'm sharing the style lessons that worked for me. Question: what is the biggest style lesson that YOU have learned?

Mine for 2017 (and continuing into 2018) was finding my aesthetic as well and curating a wardrobe as opposed to following trends and ending up with a closet full of things I wear once or twice and I’m over. You have been a HUGE inspiration for this!! xo

I have learned that a maturing woman (yikes 55 this month) can rock so many more styles than they think. I have learned that there is a fine line too between maturing age wise and maturing style wise. I no longer want to wear a mini skirt. Is this against my nature or being untrue to my self as I wore them endlessly for a good portion of my life? NO!! I have just evolved. I prefer the long line skirts with a thigh high split. That's what I have learned. Keep it fresh and keep it classy. Not because of age but because of who I am NOW, what makes me feel fabulous NOW. Thanks for just getting it Karen. Thanks for managing to speak our fashion language despite every single one of us having a different dialect.

Try continuing wearing your short skirts but with jeans, pants, or tights underneath.

I discovered that I lost my style and how I could find another more exciting one. Getting older, I will be sixty within a couple of months, has given my the freedom to do my own thing and let nothing bother me anymore. Thank you, Karen, your video's were inspiring and motivating.
Your hair looks great! Keep on growing ;-)

Ladame Auxfleurs, hi. I'll be 65 years old this month. I wear what makes me feel most comfortable and beautiful. Not my clothes wearing me. Always have been daring with fashion. From jeans to midi dresses, androgynous or super femme. Flatforms to kitten or mid- heels, men's shoes or trainers. At 65, i thought maybe i should tone it down (@60 i cut off my Mohawk). I regretted doing this. I learned that in 2017, whats normal for me is what i will continue to express. Artist, designer, dancer, writer and innovator. Embracing me in 2018. Thanks, Karen.

Since I was 13 years old I started breaking the normal parameters of fashion i.e. Never cared much about sizes, whether the clothes were from vintage or charity shops, or for men or women. Since that age (perhaps even younger) I enjoyed so much looking for "gems" wherever I could find them. So I would repeat all of the tips you mentioned, BUT I would add one: I don't restrict my hunt to the obvious labels, stores and shops that are considered cool or trendy, I love going through stuff in what you'd normally brand as "granny" shops/stores, or non cool shops. I have found some of my most worn and most complimented pieces in those shops :-)

As I am watching this video I feel like I have remained true to myself in terms of style. It’s what makes me feel comfortable and how I feel. It feels good that I’m no longer asking for the opinion of others or looking for the approving eyes. It is what makes me happy. And yes I love the men’s section too. I have a boy and I am always making outfits for when he’s older and I’m often tempted to buy things from there.

I’ve stopped worrying about my aesthetic being all over the place. I like a lot of different styles and looks depending on the day or the week, so instead of trying to be consistent I’ve just been trying to live for the day and what I like or feel like wearing in the moment. Happy 2018! Looking forward to more videos from you this year x

Amber S. Yes, i learned that my aesthetic is unique to me because i wear the clothes, not the clothes wearing me. Style wise - from one end of the spectrum to the other. Its unpredictable and fun and chic and classic.

the biggest takeaway for me from your channel is it has really increased my interest in the men's clothing section! I do lots of thrift/vintage shopping and I've always bought men's tee shirts. But until you came along it stopped there. Yesterday I tried on a pair of men's shoes for the first time! 2017 was a fun, fashion year for me - part of it is because I found your channel! Looking forward to more this year.

Thanks to you, I re-visited thrifting and scored a 100% wool cream/speckled, cable knit men's sweater. It's uber warm as I wore it with an off white ruffled midi skirt and cognac colored riding boots in the fall and dark denim jeans now.

So true about ignoring label sizes. I found a great camo skinny jean in a store but couldn’t get them past my thighs in my normal size! I put them back and started to walk away and then thought, hang on. What if you size up? Bought a pair two sizes bigger and the fit is perfect. I’m the only one who knows the label size and I’m pretty sure no one else gives a toss (as Karen might say)!
Other things: yes to monochrome, a 1000 times yes. Understanding what works with my body shape has been a game changer. Holding out for the sturdy high heel, whether block or slight platform. Never leave the house without lipstick, it makes you look put together, even if you’re not

  • @domd2261
    @domd2261 6 лет назад +26

I discovered men’s trousers and jeans. You can get the skinny fit so they don’t overwhelm, but they still sit high enough on the waist that I’m not in danger of muffin top. You can get the exact right size thanks to waist and leg measurements on most garments. AND YOU GET PROPER POCKETS!!!!! Now I refuse to wear women’s trousers for work. I have seen the light!

Love you! You are my all time favorite RUclipsr ...first I’ve always loved consignment shops... I used to volunteer in one and was that ever a bonus. They had marked a genuine Cartier tank watch for $39.00 bought it because I thought even a copy would be a great price.. turns out that the salesman from the Cartier store here in Houston said “ no madam this is a genuine Cartier! Almost everything I buy at consignment shops is outstanding... it’s like I’ve got a team of sources that just want me to have the best at a price that I can manage while still being impulsive. Also low heels..comfort and forget the size... they are arbitrary... one time in H and M I bought a 2 a 6 and a large! Clothes are made in developing countries and size is just a number regardless.

Karen I love your chanel you are an inspiration. I am 69 yrs young and have a curvy (read lumpy) figure. I used to be a lazy shopper, going to local stores and buying clothes just because theyt fit me. I became so bored with my look so I started looking online (still lazy shopping). Although I still find it hard to fit into the largest size offered I am becoming more "edgy" in my choices, thanks to you my wardrobe has changed dramatically. I now go out with more confidence and have an "I own it" attitude to my choices even if they are a bit out there. Keep up the good work. We are listening.

For 2017 I have started to explore other everyday outfits than simply jeans and printed t-shirts! I always loved dresses but never wore them. Turns out most of them were a bad fit one way or another. I’ve had a huge wardrobe clear-out, and have realized I simply hate skirts that are too short. Gotta be around knee-length or longer for me! And I’m much more focused on boycotting pure polyester and plastic products as they simply make me sweat and feel clingy. Quality over quantity, and I’m really thrilled to explore a new aesthetic, a mix of minimalism and almost-over-the-top wow statement pieces.
I came across your channel late in the fall but you’ve already been a big inspiration for me. Thank you so much! ❤️

Karen, I am DYYYIINNNGGGG!!! I had no clue your long hair was a wig, it looks AMAZING! But so does your short hair too, of course! Can we please get a sort of how-to, everyday basics relating to wigs? I have been wanting to get into them for a while but I find the whole process (buying, putting it on, styling it) to be SUPER intimidating! I know there are probably a ton of videos out there about this, but honestly it would just be so cool coming from a real person like yourself!!!! XO!

First I like to thank U for your blog and the good content in it! About personal style I think is a evolution question. Rigth now I'm a mature woman with no needs to follow rules or trends. I have been a person that enjoy to be an outsider. That's is something I'm grateful from my mother. My clothes was different that some else. She designed and looked to a seamstress. Now I'm more classic with a twist and that twist is my taste. Thanks for the inspiration Karen! Keep going!!!

The biggest lesson I learned in 2017 was to embrace my GRAY HAIR (that I have been coloring since my early 20's). I had to chuck half my wardrobe because I can no longer wear earth tones, but that's not such a bad thing is it? Your best advice for me in 2017 was IGNORE SIZES. I buy what works and tailor as necessary.

I have realised that I love fashion and am a chameleon. I have tried so many times to fit into a box, dress for my apple shape or my age or my lifestyle and now i have found that i love all looks. I was more casual as a stay at home mum but now i am working again i love the dressing up in work wear and trying new looks but adding colour. i love romantic ruffly, velvety looks but also like oversized, tomboyish looks. i am all and nothing and i feel okay about that now. Being comfortable is the best advice. Being short i loved the idea of heels, but i was never comfortable in them so flats and trainers are me, but with sequins and colour and pom poms. can't beat it. I am a bit of a trend nerd.

Thanks to your weekly videos my 2017 focus was on re-establishing "MY" style, and actually having fun with clothes, shoes, accessories again. Honestly Karen watching your weekly videos really excited me and reminded me to have fun with fashion!!! 2017 was evolving my natural style, of structured garments paired with flowing pieces ie sheer/patterned overthrows (I've been doing kimonos for nearly 10 years now but last year it was fashionable).
Any advice or comments on how to keep your style "after" the fade has fading, without it looks dated or "so last season"?

I turned 50 in Aug of 2017, I spent the last year doing a style/closet purge and my new style lesson is Quality CLASSICS & BASICS with statement shoes! Also "do more with less" Buffulo Exchange has taken most of what I've gotten rid of. That bit of cash from them has offset the cost of a few replacement basics. There are about three more items I would like to have in my wardrobe for now.

Thanks KAREN for the shout out to women petites trying the boys section. My 13yo son was having a fit about wearing Zara boys skinny jeans I got on sale and kept for 1 year. 3 pairs--2 new with tags. He is so skinny (95 lbs) that the waist was hopeless even with a belt. He and I are the same height. 5'3". I have been wearing boys tops but not pants. I thought I am not giving away new-with-tags pants! So I tried them on. They fit GREAT! I scored 3 pairs of skinny jeans and then got some fun color ones on sale in the Zara boys section. If you are short and size 0-2, Zara size 13-14 pants are great & coats. But T shirts you need to go 11-12 size.

Great advise. I have learned a ton about my style from you this year and I’m having a lot more fun with clothes now. Sticking to who you are is the best advise. I’m 37 and I finally feel like I have found my aesthetic.

Karen you have good fashion sense, and everything you are saying makes even more sense. You can wear a paper bag and make it look fippin' hot. I've learned that I should continue to watch your videos, and heed your fashion tips, because you look fabulous. I'm loving this look you're rocking right now.

I loved any thing with fringe on it this last year. I found fringed cowboy boots from DSW and bought all 3 colors. Also a fringed crossbody bag. Your air guitar playing at the end was fabulous Karen darling.

My biggest style learning in 2017 has been embracing that I am plus + petite (size 14/16 and 5’3). This led to me trying new brands esp. in the plus space and investing in a few great pieces. Simple lines and modern shapes have been my go to and I won’t look back!

First let me say I'm here for your line of women's menswear. Yaaaassss! Just make sure it goes to a US size 16! Also, I've definitely picked up a lot of style inspiration and tips from you this year. Vintage/thrift shopping and shopping the men's dept are definitely new things I did in 2017. Also, having the courage to be unapologetically fashionably me. ❤️

Once again you nailed it again! You are my favorite style RUclipsr. :-) Since I am petite I'm going to start looking at the boys and girls section. You also helped me step out of my style comfort zone in a way that I play around with my existing clothes and style thme in a different way that works for me.

Love this video! I cant believe your gorgeous hair was such a bargain! ;-) good on you! In terms of my biggest style lesson - going bra-less! I guess it was moving to NY (hello bra-less summer), but I love how it looks in the summer with spaghetti straps (super effortless and comfortable). And in the winter, wearing a soft triangle bra under loose tees or knits is the best. I have small b00bs and in my mid thirties, I have decided I dont need to wear padded bras for anyone anymore! I feel comfortable, confident and cool. Happy new year Karen!

One thing I learned is that everything doesn’t need to match. In fact being too matchy-matchy can take away from an outfit. All that’s needed is one element that ties everything together and it can be a belt, hat, jewelry, shoes or any accessory that brings everything together.

I used to spend so much energy trying to match my outfits perfectly. And in the end I often didn’t like them because they looked mediocre and boring. Now I just put things I like together and tie the look with one common thing.

Love your dance at the end. What I learned in 2017 is that I love pearls and lace. Lavender tones with lace, Victorian style fitted then flair out below the waist. Yet I have also embraced the jewel tones as well. Also, I have gravitated towards heels and tall boots.

Karen, you give the best fashion advice on RUclips and I've learned so much from you. I would say my style is classic/minimalist (at least that's what I feel is me), and I agree about ignoring size labels, but you've inspired me to raid menswear because you're right menswear is simple and classic/minimalist which is what I love and you can add girly pieces to it (and I bet better priced too). I'm going to attempt finding knitwear and shoes in men's section and see what else takes my fancy. Happy new year lovely 😘

Great vid Karen!!! I've learned to purchase pieces that really SPEAK to me. When I do I get the most bang because I genuinely love that item and feel good and look good each time I wear it. I've also learned that I prefer a neutral color scheme with interesting prints in my tops!!💋🕶👜

I know this drives people with natural hair absolutely batty, but I just LOVE a natural big beautiful fro and I sit there in awe and imagine myself running my hands through it haha! I know that sounds uber creepster but I can't help it 😆 One thing I really learned from you this year was to toss the sizing! I'm a size small and I went straight for look rather than tag size at the store and it's been so freeing!!! Thank you!!!!

My biggest lesson for 2017? Uniforms are my friend. There is nothing wrong with uniform dressing if it works for you. In the winter, I am all about thin turtleneck sweaters, scarves and skinny jeans. In the summer, it is all about graphic t-shirts - the more interesting the better. The accessories (bags, scarves and jewelry) add the funk and fun.

GENIUS! I've learned for myself to wear high waisted or to tuck in my shirt as I have a ridiculously long torso with comically short legs 😌
Also I prefer less clothing! I culled my wardrobe by at least 85% and getting dressed is endlessly more enjoyable now 💪

Hiya Miss K! May all the best things of 2018 be part of your life! I feel that the biggest style lesson for me is dressing for my physique & for whatever gives me a lift in mood, in contentedness, in anatomy (over 40 girls in da house)! If I put my best self out into the world...i just feel good! Thx for always encouraging this in us, my Sis! 💞🕊Yeeeesss...when the music moves ya...you must move! 🎶🎼💃🏿 Luv it!

K, I started following you about 6 months ago and it has been delightful but girl my wardrobe budget has expanded watching you. 😲. Love it though. The one thing that I’ve picked up from you is the great fem/mas twist. It’s so me. I just purchased 4 pair of the kitten heel boots in beige, red, black and blue. Hugely discounted and fabulous all year long. Thanks for the great tips Karen. It’s been fun watching you. I follow you on the gram too. I’m MargoGArt+Design on instagram from the opposite coast in the SF Bay Area.

I learned to be daring, matching items I wouldn't normally match and feeling comfortable in my fashion choices (even if other people don't like it). I.e. sneakers with dresses, sweatshirt with pencil skirt and shorts with warm tights😊
