I just found my grandfather’s old camera (the FTb) he’s had it since launch in 1973 and has been stored for over 30 years! I really needed this video! 😂
Wow, you found a treasure, huh? I bought mine at Facebook Marketplace on Oct. 2020. It came with three lenses, all Canon brand. You can download LIGHTMETERFREE on your phone app and use it as a light meter if you don't want to use the built-in light meter on your camera. Also, if the shutter is cocked and you are not using the camera, set the shutter speed at B, so as not to strain the shutter.
Omg Thank you very much, my grandfather gave this camera 4 years ago and I haven't used it because it seems so complicated, but with your video it seems fairly easy!!! Thank you a lot!!
I just bought this bad boy, I got a little scared from the comments that it was gonna be hard to learn but after watching this it's actually exactly the same as my Chinon CE-4! Main difference was battery and battery placement, excited to get it and shoot!
Thanks for this intense and detailed review 👍 Very nice camera, i will purchase a second one because the first was a heavy-used camera ( by pre-owner ), dust in the viewfinder, sticky lightmeter needle and so on.
I haven't used my Canon FTb for so long. I just bought a roll of Ektachrome and away I go again. I love this film camera! Thanks for reminding me of a few things Kim.
I still have two of these cameras as well as an original Canon F-1 that I have had for many decades. Except for the battry issue, it is a great beginner camera. I use a hand meter with mine. Great lenses and I love the breech lock mounts most of mine have.
Aaron Ughetto Thank you dear!! :) I’m glad you like it. Did you shoot with them? Show me the photos in case you have instagram :D mine is @kimgarza.art
Thank you so much for posting this video. My dad gave me a Canon EX Auto years ago but I only recently started thinking of whether or not I should use it. I can barely work a digital camera let alone a manual one lol. So even though theyre quiet different, I still got the general idea thanks to this video.
I've had this camera since the 70's and the 1.35 battery replacement for it now is made by weincell MRB625 at about 5.00 dollars each. online or at a good camera store.
That "line with the circle" sign to the right of the viewfinder is actually a sign where the focal plane is and not to show you how to cross the line and the circle in the viewfinder. It is found on every single one camera.
You are correct. She is describing the match needle system of metering. But the focal plane diagram is similar, so it helps new users understand the concept.

Hey , thats a very nice walkthrough. I need a help . I hope u can answer my issues. 1. My counter failed to reset to 0 when i pulled open the door lever. How to reset to 0 ? 2. if its a difficult task , can i use the camera by remembering the frames ?
The counter can jam when old. There is a fix if you disassemble the camera. But also Check for sticky foam rot along the film door, especially near the film winder.
Hi there Kim. I saw watching your video that you are using a 1.5 batery. I´ve read somewhere that the FTb QL was ready for using old Mercury 1.35V batteries. So if you use a 1.5 battery might be "faking" the light mettering. Did you notice something like that? Thank you very much.
Film has a ton of latitude, especially color film. I usually shoot film with no meter at all and get good exposures just by gauging the conditions by eye.
hello! I just started using the same camera. I just want to ask what if the small circle for the aperture doesn't move, how to fix it or what should I do? it only stays on the bottom part of the view finder. only the line is moving. hope you can answer my question. thank you!
Hello there!! sometimes the lightmeters of the cameras don't work, check if the niddle moves with differents kinds of light, if it does not move then the lightmeter doesn't work but you can use an app to measure light! some antique cameras didn't have lightmeter either. If the niddle moves then the lightmeter works but then you need to check if it is properly calibrated, just check the measure of the app with your lightmeter, if it is the same then is calibrates. I think I will do a video specific about this! Will be up in a few days :)
I try pulling up on the left knob of the camera to open the case but it wont budge. I am not sure if Im not pullling hard enoguh but at the same time I am afraid of going too hard and breaking that knob. any suggestions would help
Download the app on your mobile phone called LIGHT METER FREE. You can use your mobile phone as a light meter. After you download it, press on Camera Meter, set your iso to match your film speed, then you are ready to use it.
There is a rule of thumb called the Sunny 16 Rule. You set the lens at f16 on a sunny day and set the shutter speed near the ISO. Here is a video ruclips.net/video/yhViAnM1MjM/видео.html
Yours may be broken. When the film door is opened, the counter should reset. If it broken, you can work around it by just keeping tract of how many frames you shot. Or you can get the counter fixed.
Hi Kim very nice and useful video. Please help me to understand a think. I've the same camera and a lenses 50mm 1.4.SSC like yours. Using this lenses when I turn the f ring, the diaphragm opens and closes by itself. If I use any new-FD series lenses, the diaphram closes only when I fire the button. Can you please tell me if you also see the same behavior?
Actually couple questions if I may. I bought this camera because of its affordability and availability but also because I already had a Canon FD 28 mm lense. Can you recommend a good film brand for this and second question, would a wider lens of 28 mm be a usable lense for this camera? I’m sure this question is rather silly since the mount is made for this Camera but I just thought I would ask since it’s an older camera. Thank you for making a clear and very useful instruction for this camera
good question, haven't use it yet but you simple pull down the lever and click the shutter button, then it will start counting and when the time is up will take the photo
@Kim Garza i heard that the battery for this light meter was discontinued cus i did some lengthy searches in 2014-2015 before my beginning work came to a halt? Any chance i can get battery brand and product name, number?? Thank u much appreciated
I'm curious if I could do a long exposure (night/ astro / Aurora) with this camera. My dad had this camera and he passed away years before I got into photography myself. I use a DSLR Nikon d850 so it's quite different. Do I need to get a high iso film to do a long exposure night shot? My usual settings for G1 Aurora storm is 15 seconds, f1.4, iso 1200 or so. A powerful G4 or G5 storm I can do iso 800, f1.4, 5 seconds. So if I only have film that's iso 100, I'd have to do an insanely long photo, which would result in star trails, which isn't ideal. Advice?
The fastest film I know was in usage when I worked in a camera shop over 20 yrs ago was ASA1600. Those were typically bought by the sports photographers who needed to work with really fast exposures to freeze action. F:4 is not smaller aperture than f:5,6. It's larger. And the symbol on the top of camera is not an indicator of correct exposure metering, but is the exact focal plane mark (where the film is).
The red dot means : you have too less light in the surroundings, the FTb isn't be able to meter the light correctly. You should take a film with higher ISO then.
Hi Kim, Congratulations for the video it is very useful. I have a question regarding the battery of the camera and the light meter. Do you use a 1.5V camera? Bgiwrgos hi! Thanks for your message, I do have an accurate lightmeter, external and the lightmeter in the camera works properly, what I do is that I always have one lightmeter well calibrated (also I use an app) and then I check the lightmeters of the camera to see if the measurement is the same. It does not need to be exactly on the center, but if it is a bit of or down then you will have more or less light on your film, remember that is background, the more light you let enter the film, the more darker will be (as negative work backwards).
