  • In this video I will restore a Hot Wheels Redline Custom Volkswagen for a subscriber. This car has the metal discoloration issues we have seen in the past so I painted this car with "metal" paint and then over sprayed with pink urethane.

A long time ago, I used to paint bodies for slot cars. A trick that I used back then will undoubtedly come in handy for you. Mix Elmer's white glue with water until it's quite thin and then 'paint' it on with a tiny brush where you don't want the next layer of paint to stick. It comes off with more water when dry. You can get VERY intricate using this method. I even used to paint flames on the slot cars.

Only thing wrong was the wheels were bent. i think you may have sanded most of the detail off. I would do the detail work on this one cause it would make it stand out more as the sanding took it away. Looks way too smooth now. A lot of the body details are gone.

All your work is terrific and well done. I have bought some restored cars that used a painted undercoat like this and they can be appealing and pretty at first, but i find that over time I become unsatisfied with them because it just doesn't look like metal. Now I feel that I would rather see a car with some nicks and gouges in it than to see a painted base finish. To me it doesn't look like a spectraflame paint job any more, it just looks like it was sprayed with a metalflake paint. I like to be able to see the metal under the clear paint. I prefer your work with zinc and want to learn how to do that.

You could smooth all of those pits with primer filler, something usually found in auto paint supply stores and you can get in aerosol cans and finish it with sealer for those lighter pigment colored cars to get an even color. The primer filler would need sanded to smooth out but the sealer you do not sand, you would paint the color after the designated drying time. I have never restored hot wheel cars but have done a lot of die cast growing up and I am a paint and body guy by trade on real cars now and would imagine the little hotwheel cars would smooth out just as well.

I have watched a few videos. When the metal can't be sanded, you should consider fiberglass, it will save the car if it's in a terrible state, the paint will also be a lot smoother.

I just saw a video that said you couldn't do anything about a yellow windshield. I think there's a way to fix that. I'm a big sneaker collector and I love to restore sneakers. Sometimes part of the translucent sole on Jordan's gets yellow(something that can't be wiped off) so we use 40 volume cream salon care. Put a small layer on the soles, cover it with plastic wrap, and set it out in the sun. I don't know why it works but it does. Just a thought. Thought it might help you.

Don't know a whole lot about Hot Wheels but a hell of a lot about real car painting repair and detailing. You may want to try simple rustoleum` or Duplicolor gloss silver non metallic it's very close to original metal color. Sand with 1000 repaint sand 1000 and 1000 flexible sponge till perfectly smooth then top coat. If you need to use a lacquer topcoat you need lacquer or acrylic enamel primer / undercoat. Duplicolor is probably safest bet. If any danger of a kid actually playing with the toy, use a gloss clear polyurethane top coat

Forgot another simple but important thing. It's important to use a tack rag. The sticky cloth picks up fine sanding dust that otherwise can't be removed due to static cling. Available where ever paint is sold.

Question, I tried a different method in creating a custom paint job. What I did was after stripping the paint from a 55' Bel-air Gasser, I painted it with an enamal Chrome paint "Dupli-color" once dried I hit it with a Acrylic Spectra-flame Orange and let it dry for a few days. After it dried I used Krylon Gloss Clear Coat and the instant I sprayed it the spectra-flame orange started to bubble up and peel. I had never seen this before. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.
