- We’re starting the next stage of our Franna crane project! This video is Part 5 in our crane project and we’re getting started on repairs to underneath the crane. In this video we show the step by step process to remove and disassemble the damaged steering cylinders. We also show removing the damaged air tanks and air hoses before getting the front left hand brake assembly removed because it is completely cracked! Stay tuned for the next part of our project!

After a lifetime of fixing my own stuff there is something magical about one of the world's finest machinists doing the whole job with one adjustable spanner. Brilliant!
It sure seems like a lot of machinest’s use adjustable wrenches, to me, I’d rather use a good actual size wrench so nothing slips or gets rounded over.
Curtis does a nice job using those but takes a bigger risk doing so.

@@Maxdubi 100% agreed. A Crescent wrench is a plumbing tool in my eyes.
We called em Stilson's after the maker of one of them. Bit like vacuum cleaners are called Hoovers.
Adjustable's and Stilson's were also called Fit All's though one foreman had a ruder name that starts with F.@@HeadStretch

Since Curtis showed it, it was clear that there is a lot of work to be done, if you want this machine to last a long time, doing those deep maintenance jobs is necessary, because at the same time It seems that its previous owner did not give it much care, the cabin is still missing, it has corrosion and everything that appears.
All the money and time gone into this, would he not be better getting a non rusty later crane and do customers work, Hourly rate income, not a loss
I say train the birds to weld, run the lathe and milling machine, and you will have a crew that'll work for peanuts! Literally! Great video as always, mates!
Lathe and welding, maybe, too much for them, but finding lost bolts and nuts, also giving milling inserts and small tools willbe great!)

I can’t get over how often he uses an open end or even adjustable spanner (wrench) without the slightest problem. I have flare nut wrenches because everything else rounds off the nuts.

The thing that amazes me is the image stabilization on the "doggo-cam", as you can see Homie bouncing along, but yet the image is mostly stable. It's also interesting seeing the shop / grounds from his perspective.

love to see how Curtis stays safe during these operations - safety glasses, jack stands, etc. working on brakes is usually a dirty job, but Curtis goes right into it. excellent training video on how to maintain this heavy equipment. None better.
But always forget the most important thing. To protect the skin to come in contact with different oils and grease. This is a unforced error. The skin will not forgive it.
Skin is so sensitive, and oils contain a lot of harmful chemicals. Simply buy some good rubber gloves for your health. It's worth it.
Very true. And no heroics lifting heavy parts, always uses the crane or forklift when needed.
Battier cream protects against oils and dirt.
I agree. I see a lot of RUclips videos where someone does something really stupid and your holding your breath waiting for them to lose a hand. But I never see that on this channel. I always notice that Curis is wearing safety googles when he should be or a proper respirator when he's arc gouging etc. Its probably because Karen is there to keep him from getting lazy or stupid. 🤣😂 Without women around the male population would probably just end up killing ourselves off.
The Franna saga continues! One way or another Kurtis will make it amazing, Karen will capture the action and Homey will make us all laugh with his antics 🤣👍👍🦴

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Well you were honest with the customer, and they accepted that this thing was either going to work or was buggered. Big castings are hard to work on, at least with big aluminium castings repair is easier, had that a few times to fix cracked aluminium castings, and the fix worked well. On some the plates to fix it made it better than new, even if the plate was more swiss cheese than metal before being welded in place. Never broke there again.
It was then that Karen realized that Kurtis was missing his true calling as a bird whisperer . Maintenance is so satisfying when done. Another well shot and edited video. Cheers from Vancouver Island BC Canada

It never ceases to amaze me how you know how to pull something apart and manage to put it back together again. It's such a shame you do not have a young apprentice to pass all that knowledge onto - but I can equally understand why not - no one else is going to have the same care and commitment you have. You are an inspiration. So too is Karen and "Homeless".
I agree completely. That is one thing we men have gotten away from. Passing down our knowledge to someone else so it's not lost. Curtis, you should definitely consider getting a hard-working young man that you can teach and have a 2nd set of hands in the shop
That costs money, you’ve got to have enough work to keep an extra man busy. They’ll get there just not yet.
In an earlier video he explains his efforts with employees. He has the ability to do it once right. Others don’t, and training time is really expensive, as it’s only money going out, with little benefit coming in other than spending your valuable time teaching someone. He learned, now it’s time to get paid for the education and hard work it takes to purchase and profitably run the business.
Let me tell you... i currently have an apprentice. He's 18, finished school, keen and wants to learn. Trust me i want him to succeed as well, however. It isn't easy! I'm trying to teach him how to think for himself and work things out for himself. Am i wasting my time? can you actually teach someone a skill that tbh seemed natural to me? I don't know if its a generational thing or not but today finding a extra pair of hands that are generally helpful and independent without needing constant attention are hard to find. I said to him on his first day, there are no "D" questions ok. If you don't know something ask. But some of the questions he's asked me or the things he's done. I've thought to myself, are you seriously asking me that or why are you doing it that way WTF. You can't just have a liability running around taking up precious time and attention everyday.

Back when I worked in a hydraulic shop the only way to get anything done was to make it look like there was nobody there. No lights visible, no cars in the car park, doors closed and locked.
Love your dog. Also, really like how you lay our parts and components so neatly. Helps keep them neat. And, seems to help with focus.

Hi Cutting Edge. Do you have any employees? One of my old bosses used to say, "If any of the lathes, mills, drills aren't going round at least 80% of the time, we aren't making any money", great videos, brings back memories of repairing hydraulic cylinders.
It's fun seeing the smaller steering cylinders after the series that just finished up with the big orange cylinder! ☺️
I watched this video and came away with a new respect for your ability. The issues with the rear brake was difficult at best. I admire your tenacity investigating and solving the removal issue. I have no doubt the brake and air tank problems will be solved. I can't decide which I enjoy more. Watching Homeless or the Butcher Birds. They show the warm side of you both. I look forward to the next video!

I am continually amused by the term "banana bolts", because it is so absolutely dead descriptive of the attitudes that have caused them to remain in use in the US. It truly is bananas. (And I live in Texas, which is about as bananas as we get, in places.)

When I first saw your torch cart I was thinking wow that is way overbuilt and then I remembered all the heavy equipment moving around in the shop and realized how important a heavily built welding cart would be.
This channel is becoming a great native bird and cool dog POV source. Somehow this works so well with the engineering.

Burning nuts off when working on steam locomotives is a normal thing. Some of those haven't been moved from when it was built. I'd guess that was the case with the Franna.

The homie cam is just too precious!
Curtis, John from FarmCraft101 channel, taught me a trick for not losing any hydraulic fluid, as in no drips. Hook a vacuum cleaner up to the return tank and create a negative pressure in the tank, not a vacuum, just negative pressure. Then, the hydraulic fluid will go back to the tank when you crack open the fittings. No fuss, no muss, no oily rags.
Really loving the channel and as an Englishman I also really admire the engineering of Australian heavy machinery like this. They go millions of miles and if you get stranded in the outback, which I can only assume could be a life or death situation, they are made to be serviceable by one guy and a tool box. Learning a lot from this channel, love it!

I watch your videos on my lunch break. I'm not a machinist - I work in instrumentation and controls, but every once in a while I need to fab myself a little mounting bracket or something, and lately the voice in my head has been narrating the process in an Australian accent.

Nice work again.. my wife was feeding magpies here in VIC in the 90s drought, and within a week it turned from 3 birds to about 40 !!😂, so she had to stop. We just made sure they had water at least and they moved on eventually.

This was a nice diversion seeing Kurtis' skills in the world of automotive repair. Great camera work by Karen getting into all those awkward places! Cardboard is often better than a creeper, especially in tight quarters or when thing drip. But it will be sad to see the old shop crane go, it has a character all its own!
A huge thank you also to Karen for getting under the truck with Kurtis to film his progress. That brake assembly has been broken for quite some time, amazing that the truck operated as well as it did. Thanks for a great post and catch you next time, regards to all 👍
Such a killer project. Fun seeing something repaired that's for your OWN equipment. Very useful crane for sure, and going to be better than new with everything refreshed.

An interesting video. Between the approach you take to the work and Karen's excellent filming technique, what could be boring is not.
The relative ease of removing the gland nuts on these cylinders brings to mind the ones where you were bouncing on the end of a ~6' extension. Figured you were trying to loosen a nut
with ~1000+ ft-lbs of torque that day.
Hi Kurtis, I"m from Kentucky, USA. I have watched your welds with dual shield. I am a 45 year veteran welder/fabricator. Repaired power plants and oil refineries. Have a shop still with welders, Moriseiki lathe, and mill. Do a lot of repair work still. Are you familiar with spray transfer. 0.45 wire, run at 27 volts at 270 amps, and IPM is 450 inches. Hot penetrating weld. Gas shield is 95 argon/5% oxygen. Ploughs deep. Gotta be careful, the light and heat will rip off any unprotected skin. I was a certified weld inspector, and educator. If it melted, I could weld it. Lost my son, in 2020. We worked together for years. You remind me of Ben, full of piss and vinegar. Many thanks for the videos, lot of memories flying around my head, when I watch you. We are a dying breed. No one works like we do anymore.
Well, one upside to insomnia… I can watch Kurtis as soon as he releases.

Well I was an Hgv fitter for 12 years after leaving school to 1999 and seen some things get wrecked but never once seen that assembly get smashed.

10:24 go dumpster diving at furniture shops for large cardboard pieces. Also bike shops are great because bike boxes are double wall, really thick. Best box I've used is a large plasma TV box (72" I think it was) because the side with the picture was really slick and made working under the truck a breeze.
So Costco, Best Buy (Australian equivalent), appliance store for cardboard, giant-size
