This is undoubtedly one of the iconic songs that Harry's made!
He knows there's a lingering sadness leftover from the past, but also there's a hope that we might learn to move further, crossing that line. It gives off a feeling of driving through a tunnel, towards that light. And what else is the way to express this other than through music?! That orchestral ending surely touches yout heart and just like a smile through your tears, you start to believe that maybe we will be alright.

From the first lyrics "put a price on emotion I'm looking for something to buy" is such an interesting way to express that he's feeling numb. The song in general expresses an emotion that I don't often see expressed in modern pop. It's not a sad song but it's not a happy song. It takes you on an emotional/spiritual journey from the depths of defeat to the revival of hope. I think it's shows a melancholic view of happiness as it explores the line between happiness and sadness.

I love the feeling in this song- putting a name to the feeling? That’s a tough one. I don’t have a definitive answer; it feels fluid. If I’m down, I hear sadness. If I’m up, I hear hope. Maybe both at the same time? Knowing neither exist without the other? I”ll relate what I hear to the mood I’m in. Makes the song change with every listen. It a good song for being quiet and just feeling what you feel. Mad respect for you, Tommy. Appreciate the time in the re-listen.

I felt the same way at first. Was not my favorite song. But it kept pulling me back in and with each listen got better and better. Like you said depending on where my head is it can be beautiful or devastating. It's almost like he's trying to convince him/us that its going to be ok. When the timing of the music changes its almost disjointed and uneasy, but then comes together at the end as if to say there is hope. And those barely there two piano notes at the very end.........the song is both beautiful and haunting at the same time.

There aren't many actual lyrics in the song but the ones there I do like. For me it's a close your eyes, sit back, and let it overtake you as it just builds. Layer after layer. More and more added each time. And the feeling it gives me. We'll be alright. Love it.

I wasn’t that into fine line for the first few weeks of listening to this album, it was ok, but I kind of didn’t really get it and far preferred other songs.
Then one night after a tough shift in the depth of COVID (I’m an RN in the emergency dept) and feeling unsettled in my home life I was listening to the album in the middle of the night when I couldn’t sleep. When fine line came on it really hit me I think it was the first time I had really truly got into it and it had me in almost a trance and sort of took me on an emotional journey through everything I was feeling at that time ending with acceptance and a feeling that everything was going to be ok.
Since then I love the song, I think it is Harry’s best work. Keep listening I think I takes a good few plays and the right mood to fully appreciate it xx

This song is so beautiful and joyous but painful in parts but in the end we will be alright!!! He is so proud of this song, this is what he was scared of making ... not a radio hit but he knew this was the music we wanted to make, we his fans are so grateful that he lead with his heart and not the charts! Harry Styles is truly putting out really wonderful masterful music!

This song brings me to tears. Everyone has their own interpretation but for me this is about the relationship between Harry and his personal life and Harry and his work life (the music industry, fame, pressure etc) and all the sacrifices that he has to make. It is the perfect ending to the album of self-exploration. No skips and no rearrangements of the song order. That would be like skipping chapters in a book or reading them out of order. Fine Line feels sad but is completely joyful.

The reason why I love love love Fine Line is because it had that feeling of rebirth -like a phoenix rising from the ashes. From the first line "put a price on emotion, I'm looking for something to buy" which basically means he's numb to the last line "we'll be alright" -it gives you that feeling of hope for the future. Then the music production, man. Superb. I'm so glad you gave it another listen! Harry said he felt the proudest when he wrote this. And I agree with your term "magical", it has that feeling

Thanks for listening again. I find the lyric, “spreading you open is the only way of knowing you” has multiple meanings. It can be overtly sexual, or it can be about exposing someone’s vulnerabilities.

I haven't watched the review yet but I already appreciate you going back to check out Fine Line again... Even if the outcome remains exactly the same... I appreciate you giving it a shot again. This was the first song I heard off the album (I always listen to title tracks first) and it was a visceral experience... I was lying on my back at 4 in the morning and I remember feeling like Harry had taken me on a roller-coaster ride when it finished!!
This song feels like experiencing an epiphany... Like things are push and pull.... Things can be great... They can suck... But you need both of those polls in everything that you go through.... Finding that balance and recognizing its okay to experience lows as well as highs.... It's a fine line...
and no matter what we'll be alright...
It feels like Harry reaches that conclusion at the end of the song.... The music swells as if he's having his ah-ha moment...
And I always feel just that when the song ends... That lingering sadness is kinda bitter sweet... He's sad now but he knows it's not gonna last

This isn’t my 1st either (probably 3rd-4thish), but it’s the one that makes me cry the most. There’s just so much passion and angst it hits me hard. If you really want to tug at your heartstrings, listen to it with just the vocals isolated: ruclips.net/video/St7nR-HqQb8/видео.html That literally floors me every time. So good, Tommy!! ✌🏻

You know, you are a special one, Tommy! I subscribe only a few channels, mostly the ones that have genuine, deep and interesting content, not just overreacting, fast cuts and funny faces. I like the somewhat slow pace you have on your videos, and the time you take to thoroughly explain your views on subject. This video is the perfect example of that. It truly feels like we’re sitting on the same table, listening to music and having a deep conversation about it. I think this is what most of us come here for. So, thank you for respecting us in that way. Love to hear your thoughts on music in general, though I originally found you roughly at the same time I found Harry. Can’t believe it’s only been a month or so.
About Fine Line: there are so many messages on this thread describing the mood perfectly, that I won’t even try anymore. I will say that for me, it was a grower, and those kind of songs are the best IMO. The ones you slowly learn to love. It is also a song that I don’t put on lightly. There is a reason why it’s the ending track of the album: it has a feeling of closure. I always sit silent for a while after listening to it. It sends me somewhere, and I know it’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced it the same way. And it’s okay. You either get the feeling or you don’t, it cannot be forced.
Thank you. For your reactions, for your channel, for understanding us.

Another very symbolic thing about this one song to the fans it’s how Harry talked in the past that when he produced for One Direction he didn’t exactly had the freedom to do whatever he wanted (artistically). There’s this song called Olivia in 1d’s last album, which Harry both wrote and produced, and he talks about how much he never felt like this song was “finished” because he really wanted to include trumpets in the end of it, but the other producers never let him because it would make the song not so pop and less “catchy”.
But then he went solo and had total control of what he wanted to do with his songs and he remembers thinking how good Fine Line would sound with trumpets and how he could in fact REALLY included it if he wanted because now he’s being completely himself and open and free about the type of music he wants to produce!
He even make a joke about how we should use the “trumpets” in life at every chance we get lol

The way I see Fine Line is like a soundtrack. I can see it as the soundtrack of a movie. The chorus simple repetitive line is on purpose to bring you in a trance like journey while the instrumental builds up. You are being lead to the most important line: we’ll be alright, after accepting that life is a constant fine line between happiness and sadness. This is the song I have connected with the most in my entire life and it’s probably because I am not a lyrics person, I First must like the music then I listen to the lyrics. Fine Line has short lyrics but so effective, every single sentence just encases so much more. Right from the start: put a price on emotion, I am looking for something to buy. So many times I dealt with depression and I wished I could just buy an emotion to replace it with. And maybe you can...drugs, meds. But as soon as you accept that you might not be happy all the time and that’s ok, you become free and there comes the hope that eventually, even if it’s just for one day, we’ll be alright, again.

I can’t even begin to explain how much this song means to me. I listened to Fine Line right when it released in a McDonalds alone. I don’t like to show emotion and when I finished this song I was sobbing, to the point of one of the workers giving me a McFlurry for free. This song has changed my life. I love the way it discusses the complexities of the fine lines between joy and sorrow, love and hate, life and death, etc. It brings me the most warm peace and also shatters me all over again every time. Last year according to my Spotify Wrapped (not including the times I played it on vinyl and on CD in my car) I listened to it 823 times. That’s a ... lot. I have so much respect for you coming back to listen again and hear our fervor. Much love and appreciation!!

I really appreciate your willingness to dig a bit deeper as a result of the feedback you're given. That kind of give and take will only make the connection between you and your audience that much stronger (and it's clearly very strong already). You're a good egg, Tommy ❤ For me, Fine Line represents the journey from disillusionment to acceptance. Throughout life, we'll continuously straddle the line between good & bad, love & hate, happiness & sadness, but in the end, we'll be alright.
P.S. The design of that Hoobastank t-shirt is giving me serious Sid & Marty Croft cartoon vibes.

I think maybe you didn't get how powerful this song is during your first reaction, because it's hard to appreciate it fully when the song is paused three or four times to make comments about your reaction. Totally get that pausing to make comments is part of the whole reaction thing, so I'm not judging....just saying that this particular song is best listened to all the way through without interruption. It's so powerful, and no matter how many times I listen to it, it brings tears to my eyes when he switches from "we'll Bea fine line" to "we'll be alright". It doesn't help that this album came out just 11 days before my mom passed away (Christmas Eve), and this song has become a huge comfort to me.
LOVE that I've found your channel! You're amazing, even though our Harry rankings are so completely different😘

Golden started as my favorite song on the album, for months. The happiness it gave me literally inspired me to reflect on my life and I ended up leaving my abusive relationship. I got golden tattooed on my to remind me of that. That being said. After listening to fine line late at night, and driving at night, it easily surpassed golden by far after maybe 2-3 months. The effect it has on me when I just close my eyes, no matter how somber it can seem it makes me feel so content. The growing trumpets, the transition from falsetto to a more raspy head and chest voice as he gets more passionate through the song.

The first time listening to fine line I was so overwhelmed that I needed to listen in a loop, and I couldn't pay attention to the lyrics after some time because the music keeps elevating me, to someplace I don't even know...and that's Magic! After every line, they keep adding something (beat) preparing you to fulfill the experience.
I'm so into emotional music, and that is my favorite from this album.

I think this song is about how tough and frustrating it can be to get close to someone unless you're both able to be vulnerable with one another. The lyrics are filled with frustrated feelings until the end "Spreading you open is the only way of knowing you" (thus, the part about vulnerability - sort of like cracking a person's feelings open to reveal what's really inside them) - the beginning part has a theme "I am trying different things to really get to know you, but I am frustrated and give up (my hand's at risk, I fold)". I read it this way because I have been in this type of situation before! And in the end? I feel the mood of the song is simply reflective.

I would first like to say. You have truly given this album the proper respect it deserves. You took your time and evaluated each song in its entirety and had given what I believe was your honest feedback. Now for "Fine Line". My number one song on this album. It took a lot for me to say that because "she" was in the number one spot. I've listened to this album maybe 100× already, and am not exaggerating. However each time I listen to the album a different song takes the top place. Really they are ALL my favorite (maybe that's why I can't make a list.) None the less, once Fine Line comes on am in a trance. The song (for me) is broken down into two parts and I listen to it in that way. You have the lyrical content then the instrumentals. It's just captivating. It's downright an experience. Also, the decision to put the song as the closing was brilliant. It does rap up the album. All in all your videos were very pleasant and I enjoyed every moment. Thanks for the uploads.

And I believe we’re about the same age with the old music that we love. I too love fine line but I won’t get into all the reasons scare. Just wanted to thank you for this and this whole Harry Styles journey. I don’t know why I haven’t subscribed before. So here it goes. And I have to mention for some reason I get the same feeling here that I used to get from the doors. Maybe that’s a weird comparison but it’s really just about the meditativeness and the journey add the music and the crescendo take you on. Peace and all the love.❤️❤️❤️

I think ppl get overwhelmed by how great the album is and by the end it's like 'ok, slow song great ending ' ho hum right? NOOOOO. When i heard the 3 chords come in behind the first chorus, my jaw dropped a little right? Then with each additional build and instrument it dropped further...by the we'll be alright line, I'm feeling like a better world and universe has opened up above me and the sunlight of the spirit is warming my very soul. Then the almost marching band type drums, then the strings come in and what i guess are trumpets from the very angels above just completes me altogether. Everything is better with this song in the world.

Its one of those songs that depending on where your head is at can be either uplifting or crushing. You can hear the raw emotion in the lyrics and the vocals - its so haunting with headphones (this whole album is meant for headphones). Goddamn you interviewed Doug from HOBOSTANK?Alice in Chains, The Police? Those bands are what I like to listen to. Rock fans are divided but this Harry guy is different. His unique voice bring people together.

I have been listening to Fine Line with head phones more lately and realized the genius of it. It’s still not my #1 but I agree, top 5. But it is so hard to rank songs in an album that is so good.

I don't think that anybody is wrong. You see that is why I don't really like lists. Everybody has different taste, and it surely depends on mood, life situation, age etc. which songs you like the most at a certain point in your life. I like all his songs, but I never rank them. This is your list, it is your taste, you should not change it. I understand if someone doesn't agree with it, but that doesnt't mean that YOUR list is wrong. :-)

I love looking through other people's comments. Some of you just have such a way with words that just hit and I'm like - yes, yes that's how I feel and I didnt even realize it. Or I didn't know how to say it other than "wow i really like this song" lol. So thank you everyone!

sounds silly but i really like every song of this album, so i never get mad with any ranking, but i admit that i was a little bit offended on how low fine line was, is just my favorite from the day one, it makes me so emotional, i feel every note and the few lyrics that it have hits me like a punch in my face, i want to cry but at same time i really feel that everything is gonna be alright

You my friend, are drinking my tea. Sweet Pure Leaf is the best. 😀. I was fine with your list. Everyone has their own preferences. The fact you could make a list is impressive. I find that almost impossible to do. This will be unpopular, but TPWK is my least favorite on this album. I love the message, but I thought it was a bit cheesy overall. I hate saying that but honesty is best.

I cracked up laughing on my first listen of TPWK. Like is he serious with this...is what ran through my brain. On my initial runs through the album, I would grin and bear it through to get to the masterpiece that is Fine Line. Haven’t had many opportunities for road trips these past 6 months or so (thanks corona), but had to take one a few weeks ago and I couldn’t believe that as soon as TPWK came on I cranked up the sound and was jamming to it. I love it when Pastor Harry brings it home at the end. Anyways, it’s still probably my least favorite, but I love this album so much that I even love to jam my least favorite song. 🥰

Even like Harry says, there's not many lyrics..hahaha Here is the night he performed the song and album for the the first time after releasing it. ruclips.net/video/31fSBLbTBcw/видео.html It's great that there are so many songs available that appeal to each person in a completely different way.

I agree! I think One Direction would be a pleasant surprise to him. I also think he would love Harry's voice in Home, when he hits those high notes. At first, I thought it was Zayn hitting those notes, then someone had said the song was written after Zayn left.

Yeah... for me, I find it hard to believe that Harry sang that falsetto part in "Home" but after hearing Fine Line, I think maybe Harry really sang that part.

@@darcyliz9993 Me too, and it sounds so much like Zayn in Home, but then it kind of morphs into Harry's voice. It's such a strange vocal to me. Either way, it sounds great and I love the song!

Yeah.... sounds like they used Zayn's voice in the beginning then they mixed it with Harry's. I really don't know if they record it before Zayn left but most MITAM songs (If I Could Fly and Walking in the Wind which is about the 2AM phone call of Zayn saying to Harry that he will leave the band)
      were written after Zayn's exit.
