    Just to clarify, the 1m cable I used in this video came with my iPhone 12. It's a USB-C to Lightning cable, not a USB-A.

      It was maybe too on your face but it is so fucking true at the end of the day, I’ve always been of the line of thought that if you have a good product you don’t need to advertise it as aggressively because people would just naturally come to it. You should be skeptical about anyone paying more in advertisement than on R&D if anything because you can only get that off putting feeling of getting deceived. But I’m personally the kind of person that deliberately avoids things on ads just because they are on ads...

After all IPhones are incredibly sensitive to ripple and can have Tristar (the chip on the logic board in-charge of allowing the phone to charge) fry with the slightest voltage spike.

    I cannot recommend the amazon nylon braided lightning cable enough. I have gone through countless anker, apple and other cables to say the least and the nylon one from amazon is approaching three years of use which is absolutely incredible. the only issues I have had with it is lint build up on the contact points a couple of times but using a q-tip and just scrubbing it off has done the trick. It has by far been the best cable out of the range i've tried.

      Shorter cables don’t need the same amount of emf shielding to keep data transfer integrity and the it doesn’t need as thick a wire gauge to keep down ohmic losses. The longer the wire(of the same gauge and material) the higher the resistance and the more voltage loss you will have.

    It might be absolutely meaningless at these scales but remember that conductor resistance is proportional with length so that at a given voltage you a higher % loss for the same material.
    Between the 1m and 2m apple cables I can easily guess that A) to keep the voltage loss consistent between the two, the 2m one needs to be slightly better in construction and B) the 1m cable ships for iPads and iPhones primarily, which only go up to 20V, while the 2m cable ships with MacBooks which go up to 96W, so then again, to keep the isolation consistent between the two the 2m one would require better isolation due to the higher nominal voltage.
    BUT Apple does rate the 1m one as compatible with 96W macbook bricks so who knows honestly...

    • @PotatoMcSpudface
      @PotatoMcSpudface 4 года назад +3

      Right, Resistance is equal to (resistivity)*(length)/(cross-sectional Area), so it makes sense that the longer cable is thicker to overcome the resistance inherent to increased length. As for the compatibility with the 96W brick, I think it's because USB-C Power Delivery standard has auto-negotiation for power, so that this universal standard doesn't blow up batteries. The limit of USB-C is 100W w/USB 2.0 data speeds, but many cables are rated for 60W to use some conductors for data instead of power to maintain USB 3- speeds. I do wish there was some kind of test in this video testing data rates for these different cables, but that wouldn't matter for the vast majority of people.

    I think a more realistic way to test the cable durability would be to fix the lightning end, and tug the cable, then reset the cable to resting position. It would simulate the extra force needed to pull the cable out of the phone and might give you the same cable fraying you desire. This is also doable with the stepper motor you have (just give it a limited rotation with a rack and pinion “puller”). I’d be willing to help you design and 3D print a fixture if you’d like!

    When the cable is shorter, there is less power loss in the cable. That’s why the 2M apple cable has thicker gauge wire so that it can maintain the same current over a longer distance.
