  • www.mountvernon... - 75 HP electric motor and batteries available for ultralight aircraft! Truly affordable aircraft can be found in Part 103 ultralights but fine as some of these are, their appeal is also limited, for example, most are open cockpit designs.
    A void in the availability of a dependable 40-60 horsepower four-stroke aircraft engine may be one reason we see few PSA. Some development of new four-stroke engines is occurring but the ones I've examined are heavier and provide less power than popular two-stroke engines.
    How about electric power? - What works with electric propulsion today are low drag, lightweight aircraft that do not require much power to fly. A PSA is nearly perfect in definition. Heavier two-seat aircraft cannot offer the endurance, instilling "range anxiety," and are still too expensive. Until battery energy capacity increases significantly electric power may be limited to PSA.
    My personal experience with electric power shows it can be ideal if:
    - the aircraft can carry enough battery to fly for an hour (hard to do while meeting Part 103)
    - the motor can provide enough power at low RPM (to reduce prop noise closer to electric motor noise)
    The entire system can be designed and integrated for safe operation
    I have been researching electric power, a technology with huge potential, and I believe a PSA is the perfect place to start. A new electric motor I am developing is designed specifically for aircraft use meaning it has high torque, low RPM, light weight and high reliability.
    Concurrently a new battery system I am creating has one of the highest Lithium Polymer (LiPo) power densities commercially available and is integrated with the motor, controller, and battery management system to provide safe, reliable operation.
    Electric power can work well using a PSA with today's technology. If properly designed, it should provide an endurance of more than one hour. Those who want to fly farther and faster could couple the electric motor with a small four-stroke aircraft engine for a viable hybrid.
    FAA is pondering a regulatory approach to electric propulsion but Experimental Amateur Built rules allow customers to build whatever they want. With a simple design and modern construction methods of matched-hole and jig-less assembly build time can be measured in weeks not years.
    Britain's CAA published a revised SSDR (Single-Seat Deregulated) rule that allows the sale of a finished single seat aircraft up to 315 kilograms (693 pounds) gross weight when equipped with an airframe parachute and a reasonable maximum stall speed of 35 knots (40 mph). This is a perfect PSA rule which I hope will spread to other countries.
    The future may reward development of viable electric and four-stroke power systems and single seat airframes with modern construction and ramp appeal. Let's call them Personal Sport Aircraft.

    The FAA should raise the part 103 max weight for electric aircraft. You could make a safety argument for it based on reliability. Get to 1.5 - 2 hours of endurance and this would be a no brainer.

    electric fans can run nonstop for literally decades. I'll take an electric engine over gas any day for reliability. No rediculously expensive maintenance either.

    next steps i foresee into electric personal aircraft development:
    airframe composed by cell modules(long tubular cell batteries that are structural members as well).
    photovoltaic membranes that would cover and act as wing surfaces, light, flexible and durable.
    active motor regen/braking (using wind speed to reduce ship speed by inverting the motor into a temporary wind turbine).

    I'd love to see an LSA (2 seat ultralight tourer) running this set up with some integrated thin film solar panels on the wings. For LSA fliers when you aren't allowed in the clouds or at night that could be some awesome VFR airtime

    Yeah great... But how many charges will that Battery pack charge? 200?
    If its graphene/ nickle plated anode maybe 600?
    Still have a lot further to go, but we're getting there

      The guy said 2000 cycles. Which is good for lipo. If they were LiFePO4 it'd be up around 4000 cycles, but they don't have the same energy density.

    Would be great to see this with Li-On batteries instead, since they can be drained farther down and would give a longer flight time.

    A rheostat controls the flow of current by varying resistance. So if you attempted to throttle a 75HP motor to 10% with a rheostat. 55.927 Kilowatts (75HP) * 0.9 = 50.334 Kilowatts AS WASTE HEAT! That's equivalent to 22 electric space heaters! That being said yes... the throttle-box does technically still contain a rheostat, but this is operated on 5 - 10 milliamp. It's strictly for producing a control voltage to the PWM controller.

      Ultralights can fly 25hp engines so you could reduce that speed. Id recommend using something like tesla batteries.

    how about combining a very small cc petrol motor powering a charger for the battery while in flight, give you extra hours if you choose clever, plenty of tiny engines like 80cc,ect

      That would be great if you used 2 battery packs. Charge the one not in use while operating on the other. If you could sync the flight time with the charge time, you'd really have something there. Indefinite flight on electric power. Well, until your charging motor ran out of gas that is.

    I have 750 hours of flight time behind rotax 2 strokes, most people have issues with them because they dont fully understand the operating characteristics of 2 strokes and what it takes to maintain them and operate them safely. things such as air density, temperatures, prop pitch, prop loads in flight, and several other factors all have an effect on engine operation, most people just dont grasp it. some people think just because they use an expensive oil (amsoil, rotax, redline) it offers them safety and protection from engine issues, which is false. The real problem is people who are NOT familiar with 2 stroke operation and their limits, I have talked to a fellow member of my club who has experienced engine failure and have come to realize he was clueless about 2 strokes, that fellow I have taken up with me and I have tried explaining to him about how to operate them safely and what their limits are and etc, and he just doesn't get it, I regretfully told him to sell his plane before he kills himself or injures somebody on the ground, no business flying

    I see so much promise with this. Balanced against the wildly and ever growing technology in designing and engineering new battery designs, this will be a reliable reality much quicker than anyone realises and then where will we be? I will be one of those whom will invest, then I buy one at a time when everyone wants and is buying one. I get assembled do my walk around and the FAA will put the kibosh on it before I run down the strip,,,,lol.

      +Randy Winner I wish someone would build a hybrid system with a small gas turbine continuously spinning a high speed alternator to provide electric power. The efficiency would be lower but the energy density of hydrocarbon fuel is still MUCH higher than batteries, allowing significantly longer flight times for a given weight of batteries vs fuel.
      And considering the high torque of electric motors at low RPM, I'd also love to see this mated to a low speed (

      Surferant666 The weight of that alone would put you out of part 103 not to mention the engineering issues for the aerodynamics. Flexible solar cells are around but still much more pricey than having a couple small panels where you store the plane.

      +pen mightygun purpose built solar cells can be made very, very light. and no capacitors are needed for this. with the right implementation, the benefit in flight range would largely outweight the disadvantage in weight. at least in a bright day.

      CNL _ Using some of the new solar voltaic materials like the paint might make it feasible but lets think about what this is supposed to be. A cheap way to get in the air. Also, whatever system you use has to keep it in the part 103 regs if you want it to be an ultra lite. Get too heavy and different rules apply.

    Just watch the one risk of Electricity and Aluminum is Electrolysis and Galvanic Reaction .
    You will want to protect or watch for any sign of that .

      +Surferant666 I doubt its a stepper motor, that kind of thing wouldnt make any sense as stepper motors are generally used for turning the motor a fraction of a centimeter extremely accurately. They are used for printers and other machines for manufacture.

    What about a ducted fan rather then a regular propeller? They're more efficient and if you can put together a 12 blade fan blade, they're quieter too. Just imagine getting twice (or more) the flying time out of the same charge. Just a thought.
