Jonny was in my dads old band Sister Ray when he was 14.
Johnny Marr. Ask him one question then sit back for 10 mins. Could listen for hours.
Amazing how many people never got the comedic wit of The Smiths. Brilliant lyrics with outstanding playing and arrangements.
Credit to Rob for listening and not interrupting Johnny
Growing up in Wythenshawe, Manchester in the 80's and 90's - wow I am lucky. The guest you had on today is a genius, pure and simple.
Such a dry Northern humour, and an utter true legend. The Smiths was that most important band in my life. Great to see him happy and loving life.
The great guitar player of our generation. No doubt about it.
I've been trying to learn some of his guitar work and it's mesmerizing, so cleanly played. I was lucky to see him in 1986 with the Smiths.
@@Osc1llateW1ldly It was the Queen is dead tour I was 16 and got served my first pint. I looked about 12. Amazing being that close to the band.
I didn't know you'd be having professionally non-comedic guests on here, Rob. This is a wonderful surprise!
I've never been into The Smiths, but I'm enamoured by the stories told during this interview. Really fascinating.
He's had other non-comedic guests on, most recently David Duchovny, who has done comedy roles but I'd never class him as a comedic guest. Maybe you didn't catch that one?
I was never into The Smiths either but there's no denying their impact and influence and it's great to hear from those that are a step back from the main spotlight.
Wow what a great guy! I swear people from Manchester have the coolest and best personalities!!
Rob is such a class act, that he's getting the soundest musicians like Johnny on now.. Brilliant.
Johnny’s son Nile is a talented guitarist and toured with Hans Zimmer this year.
Johnnys legacy on the guitar and his music along with his down to earth vibe, is amazing
I love you both, so that was super fun. Johnnys face when you’re doing Michael Caine is everything 😂❤❤👏
Been very lucky to see both him and his son play live with Hans Zimmer. It was incredible.
I love Johnny Marr.
Everyone loves Johnny Marr
Class human being right there, and I mean that with the greatest sincerity. And Rob, just let's him go (as much as Rob can, ha!) Thanks Rob, Johnny, and wonderful production crew! Dave J
Great interview with an absolute legend..keep rockin' Johnny✌
I met Johnny Marr’s mum in the airport in Milan.
Just as The Smiths we’re breaking, I was reading an article about them in a day old copy of The Guardian and this strange woman kept looking over my shoulder at the paper.
I suppose I gLanced at her and she told me that was her son. I guess she just must have been very proud. She struck me as a Wilmslow type. That’s the suburbs.
This is one of those rare occasions where I didn't want an interview to end.
Need to get johnny marr on would i lie to you great interview as always rob! 👊
I wasn't a big Smiths fan - but I knew the guitarist was really interesting! Then I heard him with The The - brilliant! Especially Mind Bomb and Dusk. Watch The The live at Albert Hall (1989/90) - Infected! JM is perfect!
Get into his music brother..

Mind Bomb is such a gem
What?!? I didn’t know he was part of The The, I’m blown away. I did know about his time with Modest Mouse, another band I love.
@@TarzansMom Read his autobiograpy, its superb.
Another great interview rob, thanks. What a good bloke Johnny is.
Wythenshawe- the biggest council estate . Where i'm from . Johny was my replacement in the band Sister Ray early 80's. 🎸😎
Love it Rob, a great guest.
Absolutely wonderful interview!
That was a proper ‘value for money’ interview. Thank you Rob and Johnny.
What a treat! Johnn Marr!
Always such interesting people with you on your podcast. Thanx.
Johnny “f@ckin” Marr. A genuine living legend and I don’t use that phrase lightly
Really enjoyed Johnny's interior monologue.
I'm a fan of the Smith's and later Morrisey without taking any notice of the shitty things he is supposed to have said or done. But because of the antagonism directed towards Morrisey I always viewed Marr with some reticence. Glad to have seen this. Dialogue is a great humaniser.
He was brilliant live on The The Mind Bomb tour!
Awesome guest
Wow! That was great!
Thank you! So interesting!
How could anyone not like this conversation? Take note the whole fucking world right now!!!
That's the first episode I've seen which didn't involve recounting when Rob first met his guest.
I love The Smiths and I love this chat!
Cool interview Rob! Do more with other musicians!
It's good to have the maturity of Brydon amid entertainment's excessive egotism
christ where'd that come from? Johnny's a good guy
No questions about Moz! Well done Rob! 😎
Wow what a brilliant mind 🙏
Saw Jonny at MSG with the killers, great night!
What a nice guy.
haa!!!!! so good watched entire thing and then Brydon breaks into his mike Caine review! ha brilliant

Taught himself, very interesting. Everything we need to teach children are the four 'R's. Reading, Writing, Arithmetic and Reasoning; things that can be learnt pre-school taught by parents. Unlimited Free Play and the questions that arise from those experiences will expand on that base for every child - on their own time/energy. Just as Johnny did in that library. Kids are naturally curious and the barrier to that is just the technical aspects of those four 'languages'. The youthful sponge of the human mind does the rest. The closest thing to a teacher would be mentors, people who could give an assist over the hurdles; and also systems mentors for complete things like engines, electronics, sewing machines, how to sail, etc. All based on the child's drive, resilience and curiosity. For credentials we could publish a series of steps and provide tests for each level thus identifying fully-trained doctors etc.
BTW 'Reasoning' is just 'Alice in Wonderland', Dad jokes, etc., covering the mental traps in the human mind, the 'unintended outcomes' in the design of the human mind.
@M W Montessori use classrooms so no.
Your real argument is 'nothing is broken, innovation is a dangerous illusion'.
He was brilliant with Modest Mouse!
The best of the best
He lived in Timperley, same place as John Squire.
Mozza next 😊
I can’t figure this tab because of the friggin’ capo! Those things are cursed I tell you! I don’t have one and I never want to get one.
Johnny's a true don, but I have to say, we do know what trees are in Ardwick!
The word Legend is overused. Not in this case.
Actually theres great comedians and comedic songs at Glastonbury... bbc need to get you to host specials from there... this would be great look (if Glastonbury is your bag? ).
11:27 Hans Zimmer talk
Rob trying to look like a cool Morrissey in those National Health-esque specs! Carries it well. Just get the hearing aid in now.
I'm guessing Mr Marr is a fair bit older than me, but when I'm his age I'd like skin like that!
He’s a longtime sober vegan. Good luck.
it's called money.
@@butterflymoon6368 Does that mean I'll end up looking like Keith Richards then?! 😟
Oh Johnny Marr, yes who's this?
Anyone have a Morrissey advert before the video 🤣
no
Thought it was Han Solo!
ARGHH JOHNNY
Sorry... did I miss the Punchline? Wow... great to see two fantastic artists discuss their ideas, work and perceptions.... umm... Jonny seems a bit enthusiastic for a member of The Smiths... so can I take the plastic bag off my head?😉
or, as morrissey would say: "everything is imbued with a sort of crappiness".
7:54 Missed opportunity for an impression
😂😂
Only thing JM is guilty of IMHO is not going grey gracefully, especially eyebrows🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣🖖
Veneers, an eye lift and just for men? He's more preened than Morrissey.
Rambo?? Rimbaud?
He's near He's far He's jonny F#$King marr
Ashley Jensen is the most beautiful woman in the world.
And no,he isnt noels dad!
I didn’t hear a word of it, I was too distracted by all of the ‘perfect teeth’ and the orange complexions
Needs to get a lighter wig.
false teeth and rug
You do? Good for you to admit it to the world.
Next album title.
False. The rug is real.
Pretty sure Rob's hair is real
@John Hetherington That's your critique of one on the most influential guitarists in the last 40 years?
You've just made a complete twat of yourself 😆
Johnny Marr and Noel Gallagher do exactly the same one-finger head scratch, just sayin
Massive Smiths fan in the 80s but Johnny Marr hasn’t been good or relevant since The Queen Is Dead.
Strangeways is awesome.
