That is exactly what I was thinking. The poor daughter is going to have severe PTSD from seeing her mother attacked and killed by the shark. One moment they were talking and laughing and the next, the shark mistakes mom for a seal in her black wetsuit. I’m so sorry for the family but mostly my heart goes out to the daughter. Also I think that the kayakers were so brave to go out there and help. I heard him say that at first he thought she was hurt by a propellor from a boat and was going to jump in the water to help. Thankfully, he heard his wife screaming not to go in the water because of the shark. There are now more Great White Sharks in the Atlantic because of protection laws. Sharks + Seals = Stay out of the water. Again, my deepest condolences to the family of Ms. Julie Halowach.

poppedcollards: Deer, pheasants, woodcock, waterfowl, antelope, moose, grouse, doves, rabbit, squirrel, elk, Turkey.... are all hunted legally and ethically. Through scientifically controlled hunts with bag limits and seasons. Waterfowl were virtually extirpated from most of North America 100 years ago due to uncontrolled market hunting to satisfy the restaurants of New York, Chicago, LA, St Louis, Milwaukee... Thanks to Teddy Roosevelt and 100,000’s of sportsmen market hunting was banned, controlled hunting by citizens and environmentalists (leaders like Aldo Leopoldo) instituted with licensing, small hunting fees, federal habitat stamps, excise taxes on all guns and ammo sold, state game wardens.... And bam - Mexico and Canada joined in. We now have the healthiest populations of waterfowl on the planet. Why? The hunting public has financed $ billions that has gone direct into habitat protection and restoration amounting to many millions of acres. While the great game of Africa is being decimated the wildlife of North America is thriving and increasing in many parts of Mexico, the US and Canada. From wolves, peregrine falcons to cougars and fishers. From river otters to bald eagles. Viable, expanding populations are the norm. As such there is ABSOLUTELY no reason why shark species specific hunting and fishing seasons are not instituted.

It’s sad when someone dies. I totally sympathize with the family. This being said, sharks live in the ocean, we do not. We visit the ocean, AND, we are edible. We are actually on the food chain. It’s their domain. They are making a come back which should be celebrated. It’s really unfortunate someone had to die, and it’s also a warning for people to be really careful when they go swimming. They are beautiful animals and should not be referred to as psycho killers and lurking monsters.

You know, I'm just overwhelmed by the compassion of the comments of those that give their "condolences", then glibly spout off how the ocean is the shark's home and what beautiful and misunderstood creatures they are. I think everyone knows of the necessity of shark in the ecosystem, that, yes, the ocean is their domain, and, yes, we take our chances when we enter it. That said, is it REALLY necessary to glibly mention it? How about a true condolence, and then to leave it at that. Otherwise, maybe, God forbid, if something like this happens to your family, maybe you can take comfort of being reminded of it yourself.
And no, I'm not an armchair warrior; I've dove with them in the water, and realize the rarity of attacks; I've never been attacked, thank God.

I live on the coast in Central California. Surfers know there are lots of Great White Sharks in the waters. They respect them and know they are in the Shark's space.
Sharks usually attack because they mistake people for seals. They really don't like to eat people.
    1) Don't go swimming near dusk or dawn (when they are active).
    2) If you think there are sharks avoid water with poor visibility.
    3) Don't splash unnecessarily.
None of these things will make you 100% safe. It is the Shark's turf. We are just using it.

I swim in the ocean every other day and on the other days I surf so I’m constantly in the ocean, about two years ago I used to swim with a tri suit cause I was being a baby about the cold and one more than one occasion seals (or sea lions I still can’t tell the diff specially without my glasses) swam as close as 10 feet to me and I wanna say they thought I was one of them but realized I’m not and swam away... I always heard sharks can only taste to see what the food is since they can’t touch or anything. My heart goes out to the lady who passed:( really a shame we can’t enjoy the ocean without worrying about being lunch.... then again the ocean is their home not ours we are invading at end of the day lol

Sharks have very bad eyesight, and it was probably pretty hungry if it was willing to go that close to shore. It saw a dark object about the same size of a seal, but when it bit her and realized its mistake it left her. Sharks don't eat humans.

Why do people try to say hey every once in a great while sharks make a mistake? Trying to defend sharks? Sharks are killers. Opportunistic killers. It’s not like they see a human and a seal and say oh human I’ll take the seal...

They waste so much money. Basically animals operate by hunting for food source, mating, protecting their young, and they do the aforementioned to stay alive and report the process. If a potential food source goes in their domain especially dressed in a wet suit almost looking exactly like a seal they attack. They do not ask for permission. Stay out of the water and there would be no attacks

This happened about 15mi. South, down the midcoast Maine area from me. Very tragic. Condolences to the family and loved ones. RIP. Idk if sharks are always making “mistakes “. These are apex predators. Millions of years of fine tuning & evolution. I don’t buy them just making mistakes, I think they’re just curious, hungry predators & we’re slow, weak, awkward out of our element and part of the food chain. I’ve grown up commercially fishing in Maine & Great Whites have always been around the Gulf of Maine, offshore. Never would’ve expected this though. Especially so close to shore. Although, I guess a lot more have been seen close to shore, as they said. My father lives down on the Cape in Massachusetts, and...Wow, the white sharks have been making a big comeback there, in recent years. With the marine mammals available around the coast of Maine it was a matter of time before they were increasing up here as well.

It looks like a job for Capitan Quint, Matt Hooper & Martin Brody . What a nightmare, this tragic fatality just reminds me of opening to the movie Jaws. If someone is on as surfboard wearing a wetsuit or even in a kayak he can easily be mistaken for a seal or a sea turtle to a great white hammerhead or tiger shark. I lost a friend who went out fishing and got killed in a drowning accident and the guys father survived and if getting killed in drowning accident isn't bad enough. Getting killed by a shark attack without doubt is a traumatic thing to lose a loved one in this scary & shocking manor to say the least, you gotta feel for Julie's kid and her family . RIP.

For the same reasons I wouldn't walk around in brown bear country unarmed is the same reason I wouldn't go into the ocean unarmed. That said, even armed in the ocean you're dealing with 360 degrees of attack angle with much lower visibility while being out of your element at a -100% speed disadvantage... which is why I won't do it, regardless of any conventional weapon being handy.
