Excellent Dave. It's getting clearer. You explain very clearly and the addition written handouts are priceless. Thanks so much. I've just purchased your book too!

These 3 videos have been very helpful. I had been watching other presentations from Family Tree DNA and came away more confused than when I went in. I now have a better understanding of what I am looking at. Good presentations.

Did up to Y-111 with FTDNA. Match TONS of guys with surname CHANDLER. I am considered a "Control" for Group 7A of the Chandler DNA Project at my 111 markers. My birth surname is the same as my gg-grandfather and Ancestry matches and paper trail indicates he was biological as well. So we (Chandler DNA project administrators and myself) believe there was an NPE in my lineage prior to my gg-grandfather (b. c. 1850). I asked the project about Big Y. They didn't think it would do much good and left it up to me. Cost is the main concern then. However some guys at the project who match me at a GD of 1 (Only dad matches me at 0. We have a unique mutation that no others have) have taken the Big Y. I would think that my additional test would add data to the project so kind of puzzled as to why they would not think it could be beneficial for me to test Big Y. I may check FTDNA and have it done anyway. Maybe others in the DNA project will see that I did and do likewise. Thanks for the explanations. Answered a lot of my questions about STR's and SNP's and Genetic Distance, etc. If you can explain it to a "Genetic Caveman" like me, you can explain it to anybody. ;-)

I'm thinking that there are two moments when David says "snips" (SNPs) when in fact I think he meant STRs. Can David Vance check that? At about 1:17:41 and 1:17:47.

Timothy Martin is correct - both of the references he mentions should be to STRs, not SNPs. The transcripts are correct, I just misspoke in the video! Thanks for the catch and the attention to detail!

I saw you had VANCE in Greenville on a previous chart. Greenville Co, SC? THAT place comes up TONS of times in my Family Finder matches. However, my own research in the Chandler Family Association Genealogy Panel indicates it was a major, major, major crossroads in the 1700s. VA emigrants and probably coastal or further eastern South Carolinians and probably other migrants converged there. Possibly explains why I see those matches in my FF.

The costs have come down quite a bit in 2 years at FTDNA. Down $50 for Y37 (and you can't buy anything lower) and down $200 for the Big Y700. I hope one day you can get an autosomal test for $40 and a Big Y for $150, that'd really make it a lot easier to test a lot of people.

If you are not closely related to anyone, I stronghly believe tasking the Big Y-DNA is the best action, the only reason for not doing this is that you can't afford it.

Mr. Vance, great job of explaining, easy to listen to you speak. I learned a lot and will, no doubt, watch this series a third time after I get my Big Y test back.
