Hello everyone! We made a Deep Dive Episode on the RD-6 with an easy to understand explanation of Track Write Mode (Song Mode) ruclips.net/video/ysJm9rfNW1M/видео.html in which we show how Song Mode / Track Write Mode really works (also applicable to the Roland TR-606), how to copy and paste patterns and how the RD-6 is synced to other devices.
I love the high production value in this videos. No annoying jump cuts, no out of focus, no focus hunting, no shadows. This is an example to everyone making videos on RUclips. Should be way higher rated!
Well you've forgotten one more extremely important thing: they have completely omitted the unboxing and description of how it looks! I thought this wasn't allowed and there was some legal obligation for YTers to waste 5 minutes of my life on crap like that!
A quick correction (thanks to Andrew Henderson for pointing this out): Copying and pasting patterns IS indeed possible on the RD-6. What a relief! Here's how you do it... 1. Go to the source pattern in WRITE MODE while the sequencer is stopped 2. Press FUNCTION + CPY simultaneously 3. Go to the target pattern 4. Press FUNCTION + PST simultaneously
🥁🎛🪛You can adjust the white noise or snare amount of the snare by removing the back cover and adjusting a trim pot just right of the center of the back of the unit, where the sticker covers the back. I took precise measurements and drilled a tiny hole in my back cover so I can easily adjust the sound without removing the cover. It is not wildly dramatic, but you can go from a very soft ballad snare to more explosive, old school, noisy burst.💥
Random garbage!? That's my favourite feature. IMHO, all synths & Drum Machines should do this. It's amazing what you can come up with when you leave things to chance. Just ask John Cage...
Thanks for giving me the "last step" information that shows how simple it is to change how many steps are in a pattern. I looked all over the internet, manuals included, for the same information and you provided it in seconds.

I would personally LOVE a video tutorial on the track mode. I do not do live performances and want to put tracks together from beginning to end in a studio environment. To be able to learn the ins and outs of using the track mode, would be great.
Sounds excellent but I’m so glad I found this review because the lack of swing is a bit of a deal breaker for me, Probably the Drumbrute Impact is the more useful, more modern choice. Thank you.
This was a VERY well done video. Thorough and really made me laugh when you buzzed the red version on screen, for functions that were not available. I do believe you have given some misinformation on a few points however. 1.) I have seen videos where cpy and pst DOES in fact work for patterns. You said this is not the case. I will try and follow up with links to said videos. 2.) You mentioned the RD-6 does not respond to incoming midi and this is also not true. You can fully program the RD-6 externally and to boot, external sequences respond to accent PER INSTRUMENT and not only PER STEP, so a huge bonus there.
Thank you very much 😊 If you find any info on CPY and PST working for patterns I would be very glad if you could report back here. But take a look at the color coding, CPY and PST has a solid white background just like the other elements that only belong to the track modes (like the letters 1 to 8 on the instrument dial corresponding to the tracks). On your second point I'm a little confused, I don't believe I've ever said that the RD-6 does not respond to incoming MIDI?
@@CaptainPikant I will definitely do so and I really hope I'm not wrong. I see your point on the colouring and that would be a major shame, if you couldn't copy patterns. Such a waste. Having to manually program identical patterns with slight variations, would be really time consuming. I apologize too, if I miss understood what you meant when you said no sound triggering/finger drumming. What I meant was, the RD-6 does respond to external midi, so you should be able to trigger/finger drum from another device, like an MPC, Beatstep Pro etc to achieve a live performance. The added benefit, is accent is per instrument in this mode and not per step, which really opens possibilities for more expressive and dynamic drum playing.
@@ASH-ou4cg Ah now I see what you mean! On the Digitakt for instance you can do finger drumming without any additional devices since it has buttons to trigger each sound individually - that's what I was referring to. I will update my review checklist and will mention triggering via external devices in future reviews! Thanks!
@@ASH-ou4cg Thank you so much! I'm very happy this works after all. I honestly can't tell you what went wrong when I tried this, but it did not work then. In my defense: The manual isn't much of a help here 😅 I pinned a comment with the correction!

Good review and deep dive on this! Snagged a barely used one for $120 and wanted a 606 esque drum machine. Couldn't be happier with the features on it. The ability to separate voices into their own processing chains is nice, I plan to use that and some gain staging to make that better. Good if you get a good price on it and know you're going to have the same limitations of the 606.
I should mention that you can in fact swing the drums by sending a swung MIDI sync signal, at least that works with the Korg Minilogue. Shame they didn't add at least a pitch and a swing knob, but then again for the price it's reasonable
My favourite thing is the two trigger outputs, if you use them to trigger a TD-3 and a TD-3 MO then you can get some quite complexed melodies and modular sequencing going
great review. would love to see you do a comparison of all the 606 clones and judge them on how good they sound. I don't know much about the cyclone 606 or acid lab 606 but it's evident that the RD-6 hats sound better than the Roland TR-06. half tempted to get an original because of awesome the hats are!
Cyclone Drum Drone (606 clone) is really nice yet simple to use. Has some really handy functions as well but unlike the Roland Boutique 606 clone their is no delay or distortion effects. Not a deal breaker but if it had a few effects it would be the best choice. Me... Well I just ordered my RD-6 AM version and I plan on getting the Roland Boutique sometime in July. I think the three clones along with my Drumbrute and Drumbrute Impact will make some nice rhythms together.
Thanks for the overview! What I don't see mentioned in many (or any) reviews: As I understand it sends all sequenced events via MIDI OUT as separate MIDI notes per track/instrument. Thus it can also be used as a basic 8-track MIDI sequencer to trigger samples on a sampler/groovebox (or you could just replace let's say the bassdrum, in case you need a different one). Sure, it doesn't have microtiming, parameter locks / automation and swing, yet as far as I know you won't find a hardware multitrack MIDI sequencer at this price point (the volcas don't have MIDI out, so can't be used for that, and it should be mentioned that you probably can't change the assigned MIDI notes, so your sampler would have to be able to adopt to the received MIDI notes - it's between 36 and 51 as far as I know) (in case you know any others with a lower price point than IK Multimedia Uno Drum / Circuit Tracks / Elektron Model Cycles / Samples, Arturia DrumBrute Impact, I'm glad to be told). I'm quite curious about the upcoming Sonicware Bass & Beats (probably beginning/mid 2022, around 200 bucks) which could fill a gap in the field of budget but mighty sequencers.
Yes, you could use it as a very basic sequencer. But to be honest, the RD-8/9 and DrumBrutes (microtiming!) are so much more capable in that regard. The RD-8/9 even let you map the MIDI notes inside of the device without the need of a computer.
I just picked up one of these. It's a bit of a learning curve for me as I'm an idiot, but I'm loving it as a live jamming tool. I really need advice on the write mode and how to create a song. The manual doesn't seem to be very clear.
Already have a tr8 and tb3 but ive been super tempted to buy this and td 303 to go with it purely because of the 90s clear blue shell and the fact they are dirt cheap lmao. Im a sucker for clear casing
Sure, if you assign the corresponding MIDI notes to the pads you can trigger the sounds externally. Take a look at our RD-6 deep dive, there you can see us playing the RD-6 with a Midi Fighter 3D.
That is an interesting bug you found. First time I have seen this mentioned. You should really bring this to the attention of Behringer and let them know that you have mentioned this bug in a video. This would be nice to have fixed in a firmware update.
@@weplaywax Hadn't thought of that, but it's worth a shot. In the past I've had no reactions from them when contacting them via Facebook, Twitter or e-mail.
I would recommend a sample sequencer like the Korg Volca Sample. You can load any noises into it, its cheaper, and there are lots of parameters to edit.
Its not a BAD drum kit. Especially for like analogue freaks,. or Nostalgic synth folks like Myself i will say though it is ONLY worth the 130$ you do get what you pay for. I am very thankful I snagged My TR8 ARIA when I did. the 7x7 package. and I dig the performance edge that it gives, where one can go inbetween the normal xox sewuencing and 'on the fly' record live. Limited by a sixteen step sequencer. I dont know why sequncers dont have a ^4 step STANDARD at least,. however restrictions cause creativity by default
Hey Roberto! If you set the scale switch to 2 (32nd notes) and press the function button the pattern will play at double speed, so you effectively get double the resolution. This eats up double the amount of steps so you need to chain two patterns together to get to the final length of one bar. Check out the video description, we made a free Cheat Sheet for the RD-6 with all of these functions explained :)
Hi, Captain Pikant! Really love your channel's production quality. For a beginner on a budget, would you recommend this and the Behringer bass synth for a first look at music-making? Cheers
Thanks! The RD-6 is a good basic drum machine for beginners, but I'd never recommend the TD-3 to someone who is just starting out. I'll get into details in an upcoming video ;)
Thanks so much for supporting us Joe and welcome! If you want you can send us a list of your favourite artists and songs on Patreon, we're always on the lookout for new drum patterns to transcribe and use in our reviews and Drum Machine 101 😀
Great video! I’ve come back to it the past year and a half multiple times because of my interest in the rd-6. Now, I’m fully committed to buy one and make some noise. Recently found motivation again for music so a new instrument might open some new doors. Also, your production of the videos and sound is great. Cant forget your research that goes into the videos either, always supper informative. I feel I learn new things everyday about gear Ik lol. Keep this up!
Another great thing about the RD-6, is it incorporated the 'feature' of being able to use the tempo mode to change the decay of the OH, if the RD-6 is clocked as a slave, from an external source. If the RD-6 is clocked externally, turning the tempo knob will change the decay of the OH for another/different flavour of programming.
@@ASH-ou4cgI cant get this feature to work.I get different decays on OH and Cymbal when the machine is on master mode, but once i slave it on another machine the tempo knob makes no difference whatsoever.I asked about that on the Fb group but no joy.Can you get through the procedure please?OH and btw Captain Pikant your video is amazing!
@@Oblivion751 Hi there, to be quite honest, I am still waiting for my RD-6 to arrive. It is really behind, making it to Canada. The information I am relaying, is from what I have heard from multiple sources, on the Gearslutz forum. Apparently there is really nothing to do, other than slave the RD-6 from another master and turn the tuning knob, to achieve a different decay for the open hat. I really hope my unit arrives soon, so I can try this out in person. Interesting that you found the tempo knob worked to change decays while the RD-6 is a master though!
We're concentrating on drum machine videos at the moment, but if you want to know how the TD-3's song mode works you can take a look at our RD-6 Deep Dive episode - it's the same on both machines!
Absolutely! You can use your DAW as a sequencer for the RD-6 and freely place the beats outside of the grid. Using the note velocity you can even control which notes are accented, so that gives you individual accents instead of the RD-6's global accent.
why did you skip the midi ports info? you went straight to the usb. this would be important info since you made a point to say you can't record off the grid@@CaptainPikant
Hmmmmm, I might be tempted to get this model but only if I wanted to trigger it from my Yamaha DTX Multi 12, since I love synthesized drum sounds but prefer playing the sounds live into audio inputs. Doesn’t seem like it’s worth the effort, since there isn’t individual editability and only one output. Out of curiosity though, does it easily synch with the Behringer 303 duplicate? It would be sensational if Behringer ground out a simulated SDSV module - but one equipped with expanded user memory like on the SDS7.
Well you do have individual outs (they can be seen at 1:24). If you can configure the Yamaha pads to send the specific MIDI notes there's no reason this shouldn't work. Syncing with the TB-3 should also be no problem, there's plenty of options (see 8:54). If you want I can give it a try next week and report back to you.
First of all, Captain, your response is much appreciated. If performing such a test with the two units doesn’t detract from your daily responsibilities, I imagine a few people would enjoy learning how compatible they are. Even though I’m not that big a fan of the 303, 606 and 808 sounds myself, I know plenty of people around the Internet are because of Acid and House.
about to purchase my 1st machine thinking of the RD-3 or 6 to if see how I like it before spending Money on the Roland versions what machine would recommend 1st I was thiniing the RD-3 giving the history of the 303
Out of the two I think the RD-6 is more accessible. Like the 303, the TD-3 is notoriously hard to program because entering note pitches is done separately from entering the note durations and pauses (which can drive you mad sooner or later).
Is it possible to send swing to it please. Thank you. So I think you mentioned the MIDI was controlled separately. Does that mean you can't control it with another drum machine or sequencer please? XOX, meh!
@@EMAHGERD he only had the synclav AFTER he had the hit , it was an emu 2 he used for sampling before , the 808 was real ( emu 2 was pretty bad for sampling drums due to deltasigma convertor so it certainly cannot catch 808 frequencies, the sp12 was better for this)
was thinking about getting this and heard some complains that syncing it to a syth is appearantly a headache or doesnt work very well at all, can anyone confirm or deny this?
@@donaldchilnerjr175 I wouldn't get my hopes up 😞 In order for this to work the machine would have to be designed from the ground up in a way that the parameters can be controlled digitally (like Elektron's Analog Rytm or Analog Four). As far as I understand this doesn't seem to be the case here.
@@CaptainPikant monotron had some updates. It was pretty analog. The tb3 would be super killer to do all the automated movements. The development of the devil fish they supposed to be making would be awesome
Yes you can do all that, the RD-6 reacts to incoming notes via MIDI IN or MIDI over USB. Depending on the velocity of the note it plays a normal or an accented drum beat (which means you aren't bound to the global accent anymore when feeding it MIDI).
You're right! Initially the UNO Drum was much more expensive, but some time after Stimming's negative review the price dropped. I have a few things to say about the UNO Drum - I'll pack it all into my review when it's ready!
@@CaptainPikant I suppose I bought it when the price dropped. It sounds good but I am still waiting for IK Multimedia to give us user a sample converter. If they want it to compete with the Volca Sample 2

I'll stick to volcaBeats, almost same stuff, plus every instrument can be a bit "tunned", and a reverb/delay global postpo. Korg lacks of a more detailed sequencer functions though.
I don't believe the RD-6 can be controlled by MIDI CC. There's no mention of it anywhere and yes, that would have been a killer feature! How do you like the TR-06 so far?
@@CaptainPikant I think it ships in a few weeks in America. I have a unit preordered. I like the sound of both units, the 06 is to cool to pass up. I missed out on the 09 and now prices are getting really high for a used one

🤠 The only drum machines that have no limits are sampler-based. Then again, you could just use a drum replacer plugin in your DAW
Does the "clone" device also have an analog CLK output for f.e. interfacing with vintage synth like Roland SH-101?
The information was very clearly imparted. Well structured and not an “Erm….” In sight.
Yeah! Don't Lose My Number by Phil Collins!
10:34 hey! Could you, please, explain this "trick" with a little bit more detail? :)
@@CaptainPikant Thank you so much for your answer and the Cheat Sheet!
Thanks for the informative video.
I will subscribe to your channel.
love your content! sorry I'm finding it in Q2 of 2021
I joined your Patreon! Very excited to see more!
Hi Nolan, thanks for your kind words :)
That's a very interesting piece of information, didn't know that! Thanks!
@@CaptainPikant yes, give it a try! It is subtle, but works and offers a little more variety to the already static sounds.
@@ASH-ou4cg I hope you ll get your rd6 soon if you havent already! Please let us know how your hats behave!Cheers!!
Could you do a tutorial on the behringer Td-3? I would love that!
We're concentrating on drum machine videos at the moment, but if you want to know how the TD-3's song mode works you can take a look at our RD-6 Deep Dive episode - it's the same on both machines!
Color coordinated trainers were a nice touch 😄
love the footswitch part! 🤣
If you're using with a DAW based midi sequencer then you should be able to use the drum sounds outside the grid as a sound modular correct?
Absolutely! You can use your DAW as a sequencer for the RD-6 and freely place the beats outside of the grid. Using the note velocity you can even control which notes are accented, so that gives you individual accents instead of the RD-6's global accent.
Also support for triplets means you really don't need swing per say, if you want a swing feel look into using triplet patterns
why did you skip the midi ports info? you went straight to the usb. this would be important info since you made a point to say you can't record off the grid@@CaptainPikant
Funny how instead of having pots for clap and cymbal they have one pot for both and a switch to select between them in the sequencer.
Love that distortion
Thank - you 🎶💥🎶
Toffe video man! Ga zo door!
Captain Pikant: "Hi tom."
People named Tom: "How did you know I was here?"
:D
Distortion sounds sick on the kick and snare but a bit grating on the hats
Nothing a little reverb can't fix.
I guess it is nice that you pull individual sounds out of the main mix and through the individual outs
Hello, in the manual it states the 2 trigger outputs are +15v is this a print error ? It seems very high any help appreciated :)
Can I use other samples on rd 6 with any DAW? That is, occupy the sequence of the rd6 but with other kicks, hats, toms?
The RD-6 can't play any samples itself, but you could use it to send MIDI to a drum sampler in your DAW.
This blue version looks and sounds great
Hmmmmm, I might be tempted to get this model but only if I wanted to trigger it from my Yamaha DTX Multi 12, since I love synthesized drum sounds but prefer playing the sounds live into audio inputs.
XOX, meh!
thank *YOU*
This plus volca drums?
What cable do you need to connect to a mixer? I only get sound from one (left)monitor (via mixer).
Just a mono quarter inch cable. Maybe you plugged it into a stereo input by accident?
Nice! 👍
How do I go about getting these transcriptions ?
Did Paul Hardcastle's "19" use a 606? This kinda reminds me of that sound. Anyway, great demo.
I think I hear that characteristic 808 rimshot in there, so that would be my guess. But other than that they can sound very alike.
Paul hardcastle sampled an 808 into a Synclavier, I think he mentioned in an old SOS article
@@EMAHGERD he only had the synclav AFTER he had the hit , it was an emu 2 he used for sampling before , the 808 was real ( emu 2 was pretty bad for sampling drums due to deltasigma convertor so it certainly cannot catch 808 frequencies, the sp12 was better for this)
Excellent review, very very good video. Terribly designed machine.
The DR 110 clap is very sweet.
Yes, it fits the 606 soundset pretty well :)
was thinking about getting this and heard some complains that syncing it to a syth is appearantly a headache or doesnt work very well at all, can anyone confirm or deny this?
is it possible to just plug in our headphone and play as standalone without the need of a computer?
Yes
Anyone know where to get one of these in america? All of the websites I've found are out of stock
I wish the td3 and rd6 had motion sequence. Like the korg electribe
Yeah, me too... Behringer could have taken the RD-6 to the next level with very few changes.
Maybe a update firm ware
@@donaldchilnerjr175 I wouldn't get my hopes up 😞 In order for this to work the machine would have to be designed from the ground up in a way that the parameters can be controlled digitally (like Elektron's Analog Rytm or Analog Four). As far as I understand this doesn't seem to be the case here.
@@CaptainPikant monotron had some updates. It was pretty analog. The tb3 would be super killer to do all the automated movements. The development of the devil fish they supposed to be making would be awesome
Boooiii good one... more please! Nice vid.. good relaxed voice and nice video! subbed... ✌️
Did they fix this clap volume issue in later units?
I have no idea, I'd like to know as well.
is it possible to connect it to a midi keyboard and play the sounds with the keys?
and can you also use a sequencer with it?
Yes you can do all that, the RD-6 reacts to incoming notes via MIDI IN or MIDI over USB. Depending on the velocity of the note it plays a normal or an accented drum beat (which means you aren't bound to the global accent anymore when feeding it MIDI).
@@CaptainPikant thanks!
can i use the distortion on individual channels?
Unfortunately not, that would have been a great feature!
What about the UNO Drum as an option ? It is about the same price...
@@pocojoyo Yes, a sample converter would be awesome!
Can the RD6 output midi notes ? or is the midi out just for sync ?
it has a midi out/thru port only for sync
I would beg to see a video about RD6 mod ! Also you forgot to talk about the drumatix from acid lab, which is (more than) a 606 clone but still a clone imo :) great content as always !!
Gonna be my second synth :3
Great! Sounds like a 606!
I'll stick to volcaBeats, almost same stuff, plus every instrument can be a bit "tunned", and a reverb/delay global postpo. Korg lacks of a more detailed sequencer functions though.
Does it have more than one clap?
one clap yes
do i need it a daw to get sound or can i play it straight out of an amp or speakers
Yes you can just hook up the main out (or even the individual outs) to any amp system.
Hi Captain Pikant!
Are u the "bad gear" dude?
Most certainly not - the different voice, accent, arms and hands are a dead giveaway ;)
@@CaptainPikant Yeah, im pretty sure u are. Great video, gonna watch some bad gear videos now. Peace
can you get a deep bass kick on this?
Trig out to a bass synth like a MS1
great video! looks like a fine option to a MIDI hardware rig using a DAW. Amazing channel, like and susc
I’m subscribed and I own the tr-06 :-) Brillant content!
If you hook this up to a digitakt is there a cc list? That would take it to the next level
@@Zeal808 luckily, Behringer has released the rd9 a few days ago.
@@distortimus7631 facts! I’m curious forsure .
