These are so true. Been practicing balance in the garage for a few months. I rode 2 weeks ago and found myself naturally standing from a dead stop in technical areas. I literally spent the drive home thinking to myself “that’s new, never done that before”. It’s a result of confidence in balance and is unbelievably useful, saves so much energy. I’m officially a student of the Larson academy now. Thanks Rich! There is no end to the progression, keep them coming.

All your lessons, and many others actually, all start and end with muscle strength for most casual riders. Since I began riding again after a 45 year hiatus I have had to re-learn how to bend, twist, and otherwise use neglected parts of the anatomy. Starts with upper body but never ends on core and leg strength and use. Loosening up the hips is essential as riding progress depends on decoupling your upper body from the bike bottom, a skill you need for everything off-road.

These are the things I love to discover/learn! Wouldn't have tought to formulate this technique and use it consiously.
Learning what to do when it doesn't work out is such a key to getting better! It opens the possibility to try things and learn from them and takes the anxiety out of your head.
Would have prevented my last crash/tipover:
I didn't quite make a loose-gravely hillclimb and killed the engine in gear -as I learned. But my XR 600 is kickstart only and I couldn't get the front to swing out to the side going backwards because it would slide on the loose gravel. The engine also doesn't hold the bike, as the auto-decompression kicks in as soon as the engine starts turning backwards (to prevent kickbacks when starting). And I couldn't kickstart the engine (kickstarter on the right) as I needed to hold the rear brake.
I was pretty stuck there and tried one too many times to get the front to swing around to get the bike turned, the rear went into an even steeper part and I slid backwards with both tires locked and crashed.
Using this technique I could have gotten off the bike to the right side, whilst holding the rear brake and handling it from there.
Can't wait to get back into a similar situation.
Thanks for all these videos, makes me exited for the sport!

I ride mostly seated due to back issues, but I do sometimes take off with one foot on a peg and then swinging my other leg over as i start rolling out. Usually its much easier to do this than throw my leg over. Getting old is so much fun, hahahaha. As for balancing, whenever I'm riding on road I always try and avoid putting my feet down, even at traffic lights. Sometimes I can hold off all the way to the light change (much to the amazement of car drivers watching it all) but some lights just take that little bit too long, haha.

These are great tips. I can do some of them but my biggest down fall on my KTM is having no clutch feel for the technical drills like this. My old YZ450 I had no problem since you had that feel through the cable. I can start and stop on hills with no issue since I know where the engagement point is to keep moving or to get moving.

I use the dismount technique since my legs just will not reach the ground seated. But these are the foundation - since I started practicing balance and slow speed turns my riding has improved a lot. Also started to practice aggressive starts into a hill climb with a short run up - maybe a bike length or start at an incline. These force you to be up on your legs to keep the balance and traction going up the hill not sideways. :D

But my ejection fraction is only 30-35% so I get tired really easy. I have not set up my suspension for my weight yet and I'm sure that's a major factor. What about the pegs being moved down and back? Does that make it easier? Taller bar risers? Any specific technique? I'm looking for any advantages I can to help. I'm 6'1", 260lbs on a 23 TE300
