A new diorama project for 2024

- A quick introduction to a new diorama project I'll be working on this year (and beyond, probably!). I recently bought a new Scalextric set and thought it'd be a great project to put it on a permanent baseboard and create a race track diorama, using modelling and painting techniques to make a huge diorama :)

Scalextric was my favourite "toy" when I was young. I was never into railways or train sets. My dad made a track for my brother and I in the loft of their house. It only got broken up four years ago when my dad died and we had to sell the house. You used to be able to buy lots of accessories to build pits and grandstands and bridges etc and it all looks very period now. We also got hold of an old Meccano slot car set and converted the cars but they were great old 50's cars like the Cooper, Maserati and Panhard. Dad also reduced the voltage to the track to make the cars more scale speed.
Very cool! Yep, I've got a few of the old buildings too. I might paint them up and try to make them more realistic looking in a future video.
I for one would definitely like to see all of your updates for this project!
Thank you, that's good to know! :)
At first I thought you would want to run the race track through a war zone, but your vision is excellent as well 🙂I would certainly watch the building process!
Thanks :) That would be an interesting idea! The scales are not too different either...
Looking forward to seeing your new project. Never know you might inspire me to get my sons old Scalextric kit out and do something similar.
Thanks. I'll do my best! I have had to be very careful though, because it seems like another hobby that could be a huge money sink. I've had to stop myself buying more cars and in some cases remind myself that I already have that car in plastic kit form!
My Father did this for me when I was 10, the layout had Scalextric and Hornby railway track laid out on it with roads, trees, buildings and it all hinged back to the wall when not in use!
Very cool! A great way to save space!
How about a post apocalyptic diorama? You could also try a bit of "Gaslands\Dieselpunk" modelling with the cars too.
Whatever you do, it'll be great to see!
That's a cool idea, thanks!
I think that this will be fun to follow along with your usual builds 😁
Thanks - I hope I'll be able tp include some useful updates :)
Cool idea! Looking forward to follow the process!
Awesome, thank you!
Nothing wrong with taking your skill sets in a different direction. I think you will have a lot of fun with this project and will be looking forward to your updates on it.
Thank you - I appreciate your feedback and positive comments :)
A '50s/'60s layout wouldn't have many marshalls so later is probably for the best. Looks like a cool idea. Years ago, my brother had a model railway set up in his room which could be folded up onto the wall to get out of the way.
Yeah, it's tricky...I like the look of old school circuits but a lot of figures and buildings are more modern. Maybe I'll do something like the Goodwood Revival - modern, with an old theme.
@@ModelNerdI went to a slot car festival last year where there was a Goodwood hill climb you could try out but you had to power the car using an exercise bike.
@@BOABModels Very cool!
This looks totally amazing really looking forward to seeing this develop and come to life
Thank you
Sounds like a lot of fun to create and will be fun to follow along too. Modelling encompasses a wide range of things so this isn't a move away just a widening of scope. Just jealous that you have the room to do it.
Thank you. I totally agree. Yes, I feel lucky that have this much space. I see a lot of US based RUclipsrs who have huge basements dedicated to slow cars, but this 2x1m space is what I have so I'll make the most of it! :)
excellent idea, i hope you take us on the journey creating this. it'll be fun to see how you go about the the build stages..
Thank you - I'll try. I'll post just photos of the initial board / wood working stages, then videos on later stages
It's still modelling, so I don't see any problem. There is always something to be learned from other areas of hobby pursuits. Best wishes.
Thank you - I appreciate it!
Would love to see more of this!
Thanks Mark - appreciate the feedback
Great idea. Show us the progress every now and then. Tbh, if the black really is the track dimensions, imo the tables are to small for making a nice environment. But i'll wait and look what comes. 👍😄
They are small (but all the space I can spare unfortunately). However, a big problem I find with dioramas is having too much space - it is really hard to maintain a level of variation and randomness (texture, colour, etc) to maintain visual interest on a large diorama (e.g. a tank in a large field). So I'm looking at this more as 'lots of small dioramas'. There will be a pit area, several marshals' areas, spectators areas, etc - all quite small but hopefully all with a high level of detail.
Love this idea mate! I bought a touring car super saloons set last year and would love to set it up like you, unfortunately i haven't the room.
I'll just have to be content with watching your layout come to fruition. Good luck mate and look forward to updates.
Cheers
Bobby
Thank you mate! I've almost finished with the basic build phase now (foam, elevated areas, track almost all down) so soon I'll be able to start doing some actual modelling :)
As a motorsport fan, this looks amazing, the last corner on the final designs look Like a sort of less high speed version of parabollica at Monza, and I Like the little tri oval with the added on part to make it an infinity.Make sure to add the definitely safe concrete barriers of the 80s and early 90s,as that would look amazing. This for sure will take time, but if you say you have the space, then go for it,and good luck with it Stu!
Thank you! Yes, I definitely had Monza in mind when I designed that final corner :) It is actually banked, but in the modern Scalextric sets you can only get a 22 degree banking.
Well, taking the banking in mind I guess it is sort of a Zandvoort final corner then, can’t wait for it anyways!
What a great idea. Look forward to some updates.
Thank you
Great, looking forward to this.
Thank you David
Something different.... brilliant, thank you
Glad you liked it!
Hi. This looks like a great 'side' project. I hope you do make at least a few videos as it'd be interesting to see the progress. Regarding the "water feature". Would it fit into the extension table, in between the tracks? It may open up scope for some photography? i.e. Track with car/s, water, track, spectators. Or track, water, track with car/s spectators.
Thank you. Yes, I think that is exactly where the water will live. I was considering making it run to the table edge, but cutting it away would probably weaken it too much.
Sounds fun.
I hope it will be :)
Fantastic idea be great to see the Final version xx 😊
Thanks!
V Cool. Hope to see progress. #stillmodelling
Thank you
Please share your Progress!
Thank you, will do
Question, what design sw is that?
The 3D software is TinkerCAD. The track design software is Ultimate Racer.
@@ModelNerdThanks, I think I will try that.
👍👋🇲🇽
Thanks
With pitiful 'experience' with railway layouts, my take on this is the work outstrips the positives very quickly.
And decimates the resources for the regular hobby.
Plus is a net deficit regarding WAGs etc... so compensatory activities are needed in that department too!
Oops, sorry!
That's ok - each to their own :) For me I see this as a "dip in, dip out" project once the board is built. The track will always be usable and the environment can be slowly built up.
Dearest friend,
As you well know, I hold you in high regard.
We both have very little time; You can read and give me an answer calmly in the next few days.
I propose an invitation to my home in Italy, one day, in a year's time...
You'll only pay for round-trip, free room and board for you (and your fiancée, if you have one).
I live near Milan in a large three-bedroom house surrounded by a wonderful garden.
Milan is rich in history, and I can accompany you for the visit ...
First, we can get to know each other well on social media, of course.
It's just an interesting and nice idea for you... and for me.
We do not know each other at all, so my proposal is a gamble; I recognise that. Anyway...
Unfortunately, we Latinos, unlike you Englishmen, are emotional; it's a flaw.
Better you are more rational and balanced.
I aspect patiently a positive reply.
Bye.
Thank you, that's a very kind offer. Thanks for watching and following the channel.
Hi Stu, I like all phases of your modelling. I welcome this idea and look forward to the final decisions.
Thank you - I appreciate your support
