FWIW: Its not the photons getting amplified its the elections: a high energy photons will hit the metal plate in the PMT freeing electrons. the additional plates when hit by the free elections release even more elections creating an amplified effect. Thats a nice piece of scintillation plastic. I would recommend getting a PMT and using as a really nice radiation monitor, & just use a cheap piece of plexiglass for your vacuum lid. I bet you could sell that scintillation plastic for quite a lot of clams. FWIW: I have several Scintillation devices NaI(Th) as some scintillation plastic but nothing close to that size. Also some BF3 & He3 Neutron detection gas tubes.

You are correct. I just made the video off the cuff. It was a nice day and I saw the effect while in the garage and videoed it with no preparations.
