I recommend watching the other version, but I'll leave this one up since it's already been shared quite a lot and I don't want to mess with that. Just keep the other version in mind.
When I uploaded this video, it suffered from some RUclips downscaling that I didn't anticipate - it went from approximately 540p to 480p, making it a little bit more blurred.
The other version avoids this issue.

This is full footage of Talking Heads performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, July 9th 1982. Originally broadcasted on Swiss TV and radio, but this footage is from an archive of the master tapes (except the last song)
Important notes:
Psycho Killer has some pretty weird mixing issues, but it sorts itself out after a minute, so just bear with it.
Everything else sounds and looks amazing, until the encore (Take Me to the River) which was missing from the rest of the footage, so it was edited in from a low quality recording of the TV broadcast.
It had very crackly audio so I synced the broadcast footage with superior audio of Take Me to the River taken from a recording of the radio broadcast, and I think it turned out well. (You can still hear about 25 seconds of the original audio at the very end, but I turned the volume down to spare your ears)

The setlist is fairly typical for their 1982 "The Name Of This Band is Talking Heads Tour" (to promote their first live album) between the Remain in Light tour and the Speaking in Tongues/Stop Making Sense tour.
It includes an early version of Swamp since they were in the process of making Speaking in Tongues while touring. They also often played Love → Building on Fire near the start of the set, but unfortunately didn't for this show.
I can't remember where, but I think I saw somebody say they intended to play Crosseyed and Painless for a second encore (which they often did on this tour) but decided to end after the first encore due to the overwhelming heat.

When in 1982 was this? I saw them at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta in early September of ‘82. A fairly similar show, although Tina was way pregnant when I saw them…

I’m 23 and love Talking Heads. I showed my 10 year old nephew “What a day that was” live and he said he added it to his 4th grade class playlist. That song is so catchy and the live version is just perfect. Wish I could have taken him to a concert…
To those asking about the sound mix: it’s most likely a recording from the sound or monitor board. And the engineer is ‘soloing’ certain instruments to get them sounding right. So what your probably hearing is a headphone mix of the sound engineer. The front of house audience wouldnt hear this,though.

Wow, what a show--I had no idea Talking Heads played live between their 1981 Remain in Light tour and the 1983 Stop Making Sense tour. Fascinating look at the band in a transitional point in their career. And of course the music is amazing.
Youth today should see this and experience what a true live show experience was like! And look! No phones all sticking up the entire time blocking everyone’s view.
Talking Heads were one of the best to ever do it!

Never could find that "Name of this band is Talking Heads" but luckily was able to make a dub of it.
Bought True Stories when it came out as a birthday present for my 7th grade girlfriend. As soon as she opened it, i pulled out my blank TDK and asked if I could run up to her room and copy it on her stereo.

WOW can't believe this footage surfaced. What a great document of the band pre-Adrian. Some very unique parts of this performance: 4 songs from Byrne's work with Twyla Tharp on The Catherine Wheel and a song from Jerry Harrison's first solo album. Thanks a bunch for this one.

‘82? This is post-Adrian. He toured on Remain in Light, And then I think essentially got booted. This performances is between records, pre- Speaking in Tongues…

Sounds like it was pulled off the direct feeds to the board, so vocals and drums are high but amplified instruments are running in part on stage volume. Definitely not mixed for a live recording.
Stumbled upon this after seeing a video for someone else at Montreux. So glad I did. Not my favorite tour but the rhythm section was tops. That is how you take the studio on the road!

I saw this tour at Forest Hills tennis stadium in NYC. I loved that all the different side projects got their moment, as Tina brought out a few of her sisters and they did Genius of Love.

I saw them in Los Angeles in 1982 . First time was 1978 at UCLA outdoors for free . One of a kind band .

in those days bands were genuine the lyrics were not controlled ,like they do control every thing these days ,old school you sang from your heart and what you said were more expressed ,the crowed were different and their were no Mobil phones to disturb the concerts

The sound is also typical of console recording from loud (or small venue) shows.
The guitar and drum is usually low in the mix, because this is exactly what is sent to the main speakers in the venue, and they need less of the naturally loud in the speakers. Simple math really.

1979 Patrick Gym at UVM. Unbelievable show. At the time I had just seen Elvis Costello and little did I understand in both cases it was musical genius at work. There’s only 3 in my mind over the decades, write it, produce it and perform it. Meanwhile all were musically gifted and could play several instruments with ease, oh yea they were also the front man of their perspective bands and had great vocal ability, oh yea, seldom did they ever cover any other band, 90% of their songs were theirs and original. All 3 leveraged a multitude of supporting instruments and musicians to support the multi layered sound each created. Oh yea, each were able to evolve over decades 52:27 and stay relevant, except Prince with an untimely passing. Yes Prince, Elvis Costello and David Byrne. I’m 61 and appreciate masterful musical minds like the aforementioned and trying to avoid the “get off my lawn” label or perception, but hey music in my era lives on while todays Disney, Nickelodeon and I heart music created pop stars never endure the test of time when measured on their pure musical acumen and talent.

I love how all of DB's solo stuff literally sounds better with everyone else. Like if my big hands was made with them it would have easily been a hit, it's so so good compared to his solo variation. It's so unfortunate how they're all still around to still do things, but he let ego really get the best of it.

According to Chris Franz's book, they all did some blow now and again but David wasn't a big user. David was just a natural weirdo. Coke was just everywhere back then but none of the band would be considered strung out heavy users of anything.
Yea, looks sort of into something doesn't he, and I don't mean his antics, in his eyes and face. Saw him in Vegas 2020 or so and waited by our parking spot which just happened to be by his tour bus for an autograph but he never came out of the door. Then we were like, oh ya he's ply at the Bellagio by now, like he cares about the tour bus tonight.
Nah … Byrne was never much into drugs: he supposedly tripped a couple of times, and smoked a tiny amount of weed at parties way before Talking Heads got famous, but is otherwise just a delightfully peculiar person. Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth are who famously got addicted to cocaine and did mountains of blow, from around Talking Heads’ second album through about the middle of Tom Tom Club’s career. Their drug use was a big part of why Talking Heads broke up so acrimoniously, Byrne just wanted nothing more to do with them and basically informed them of the breakup via press release-not the height of tact, but it’s somewhat understandable. Then Weymouth, still pretty strung out, accused Byrne of everything from witchcraft-like actual witchcraft, taking part in human sacrifices in Haiti while gobbling hallucinogenic plants, really nutty accusations-to mind control … to just being kind of a dick. How much of her accusations were due to drugs is debatable: Weymouth is supposedly now sober, yet still comes across in interviews as kind of unhinged. And how Byrne handled band relations may not‘ve been great, but they were all kids then … and since then I’ve not heard anyone in music say he’s anything other than delightful and kind and polite. And he and Weymouth have since buried the axe. Regardless, the point here is: no, by most accounts Byrne was not a big part of the ‘80s drug scene.

The noisegates threshold is not set right so they don't 'open' when they should, to let the sound of drums vocals etc pass when they are supposed to. This causing chopped sound.
My sound engineering teacher once said : "Those damn noise gates, they're like children. You cant leave them unchecked."
We here have an example of this in the beginning.

You know your a great band when you can open the show with your one big hit (at the time) most bands lead up to their big song well done now put away all your personal bullshit David and get this band back together ! We the fans DESERVE at least one more tour outta ya all !!
Deserve? We don't deserve anything. Talking Heads are done, and have been for decades. Byrne has gone on to make a ton of great music on his own, why would he go backwards? Byrne is 71 years old, and his last tour win awards. After what Tina and Chris have said about him, it's surprising he even talks to them. Just get over it, they won't tour again.

What a find! Great set. I think this is a transition period for TH though....post Belew era and pre Bernie Worrell. Still great but not as explosive as the previous tour with Adrian Belew and not as slinky perfect as Stop Making Sense.
Especially adding the second backup singer on SMS. Those two low-key stole that movie.

If Chris, Tina and Jerry could do this AMAZING job on Catherine Wheel material, why was it David, and not Talking Heads with Twyla Tharpe ?
They do an amazing job playing the songs but it would be strange to get the entire band involved on the full thing - I can't imagine the others being very interested in making a soundtrack to a dance project compared to David. Although Jerry/Brian Eno/Adrian Belew/Bernie Worrell/Steve Scales/Dolette McDonald all contributed a little bit to a couple of tracks so it did have some crossover with Talking Heads besides David anyway. Just that David was the main one interested in making it.
I believe that David was the only one of the four dating Twyla Tharp. 🤣
