    The entire album this song is from is incredible honestly. Also, the spoken part at the beginning is actually the chorus to “Rebirth”, and this was the opening track to the album so it’s kind of a continuing theme. “The Slumber” is another great song of theirs from that album

      The Slumber leads into Worship. So if you do one of them, it should maybe be a double reaction of both, if you haven't done them already.

    Ategnatos is the first song on the album, while Rebirth is the last song. There is a lot of foreshadowing in this song of Rebirth, including the starting vocal and flute lines. This album is so good in it's entirety, well worth a listen. As an aside, I think you'd enjoy Cellar Darling, which is an outgrowth of Eluveitie. The former hurdy-gurdyist, Anna Murphy sings and plays in that band. Check out "Insomnia" and "Black Moon."

      Better to listen to tracks from The Spell, imo. First album was quite good, but the more experimental nature of the Spell is just more interesting to me.

    I'm really glad you finally picked another Eluveitie song, I was waiting for this. Sadly, it is not their best piece of work. Maybe if you are still interested in their work you should listen to Slumber from the same album or even better, check some of their older songs like Call of the Mountains, rose for epona, epona, helvetios or my personal favorite, Quoth the raven. I really hope you will one day.
    There is one aspect which I think is really important to take into account. The song is the album opening, and Rebirth is almost the last song from the album. So Rebirth is supposed to be the climax. Ategnatos on the other hand I think is supposed to just set up the stage and I think it does the job pretty well.

    It was suggested already, but listen to Apocalypse Orchestra for sure if you wanna hear unusual instruments. My personal recommendation is either Flagellant's Song or Garden of Earthly Delights.
    That said, this was a good video, Eluveitie is probably my favourite band though, so I might be biased.
    Edit: I almost forgot, but Chthonic might also be worth checking out for unusual instruments as well. (Taiwanese Black Metal, one of my other favourite bands)

    This was definitely a solid track. If I was to be really critical I'd say that the metal parts are pretty standard melodeath, but the folk elements added enough spice to make it more interesting than it would be otherwise, and the combination made it more than the sum of the parts. Actually really liked the guy's growls here. Good, rich tonality to them.

    Exactly my opinion on that track. It feels, like something is missing an the midsection was there just to be.

    The hurdy-gurdy is basically a mechanical violin, that has a kind of buzzing drone undertone to it. To me it kind of sounds like a cross between regular violin and bagpipes. That said, while I did hear violin in this one, I didn't notice anything in this that was definitively hurdy gurdy. Their song Epona (not to be confused with their other song A Rose for Epona) off one of their two non-metal albums makes the hurdy gurdy more obvious. And as a bonus for you: no growling.
    For learning about the Hurdy Gurdy, Rob Scallon has a good video on it: ruclips.net/video/gYJg9cLk1us/видео.html

      Still have 84 to get through so not quite yet. On average we should clear 13 a month so I'll be opening them back up around June or July. If I can come up with a process that keeps submissions slowly coming in then I might open it a month or two prior to that since I know I'll still be able to make progress and/or keep up with demand.

    Look mum, I made it into a CR video!
    Thanks for checking these guys out again, very cool to see more people exposed to them.
    The Hurdy-Gurdy is very low in the mix on this one, you can hear it live much better. Strange choice to make it so low in the mix, it's much more prominent on other songs, especially older ones.
    I have to go listen to Rebirth again, but to me both songs had more or less same amount of folk elements mixed in with the "metal", while Rebirth had longer heavy folk elements and the Gurdy was far more prominent in the mix as well as given its own solo moment. In this song the male vocalist, Chrigel, was more dominant, while Fabienne's vocals were almost like backing vocals or choir in this, lower in the mix and heavily layered. I personally do feel like there were folk elements woven throughout this, but definitely more subtle during the "metal bits".
    Some of their music definitely has less folk elements, and some have waaay more. Especially on this album (Ategnatos), some are far more "folky" and others are more straight up metal, but in general on this album they went "harder" metal, while the previous album they did was 100% folk/accustic (Evocation II - Pantheon).
    I think Chrigel being more prominent on this one may have soured the song for you more than otherwise! Unfortunately for you, he's prominent in almost all of their songs, sometimes he's the only vocalist.
    For songs that are more folky without being nearly 100% folk, I'd say "Inis Mona" or "King" is your best bet, probably go for "Inis Mona". Folk elements are, IMO, woven throughout, and the Gurdy is far more prominent in the mix on these ones. The "metal" bits are more like hard rock too, with a grungy feel to it. The only downside, is they are 100% Chrigel singing :)
    If you want to hear some stuff that is 100% folk and doesn't feature much growls at all, I'd recommend "Epona" or "LVGVS".
    Anyways, all the best!

    • @aenorist2431
      @aenorist2431 3 года назад

      Exactly how it is for me. I would be their biggest fan, if they ever dissuaded Chrigel from singing.
      And yes, I know that is never going to happen, which is a crying shame, because to me it ruins what would have otherwise been a great band.

    • @LaughingMan44
      @LaughingMan44 3 года назад +1

      @@aenorist2431 Doesn't ruin it for me, but I understand why others aren't a fan of his singing. TBH though, some of my favorite songs of theirs don't feature much of his harsh vocals.

    Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Think it was just the epic chorus that got me, which usually I find these types of choruses kind of lame, I but I liked this one for whatever reason. Loved the flute and folky parts too. The stereotypical speed metal bits though were just so disappointing and kept this from being great for me. I did enjoy the screaming when they dialed back the fast riffage and added the flute (and like I said in the chorus too with the cleans). Don't remember the other track that we checked out from this band so I'll check it out after this.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  3 года назад

      I think it's the back and forth that ruins it for me. It's either super metal or folky with no sort of compromise. I'd have loved it if we had seen a nice combination of the two.

      @@CriticalReactions Funny... there's quite a segment of this combination that I was listening to when reading your complaints. And then another one + ornamentations of folk along the epic ending.
      Listen from 3:40 and then from 4:35 in your video. And then the whole finale of course.
      And, the hurdie-gurdie is part of the layering not beeing very up front here.

      @@CriticalReactions You might like In Extremo. A German band that takes authentic Medieval poems and songs and does a sort of half-metal, half-traditional version with homemade instruments. The song "Herr Mannelig" is an example, for contrast see Garmarna's more traditional version.

      Those two songs are linked, the opening talked lines are the lyrics of Rebirth chorus, and even the name Ategnatos translates to rebirth in Gaulish.
      Really the whole album is linked around the myth of the cauldron of rebirth, but Ategnatos and Rebirth are more closely related to each other than the rest of the album.

    This was maybe not the best pick for highlighting the hurdy-gurdy in specific. Deathwalker, The Slumber, Epona, Thousandfold or even Breathe would have been much better for this purpose.
    Later edit: I forgot maybe the absolute best example for hurdy-gurdy insane lines, that being WORSHIP. It's basically the main instrument you hear there, maybe only behind the drums.

    It felt to me like it should've been two separate songs. Just from first listen ( not being too critical ) it was a bit of a mess.....with some good, powerful moments or segments.
    I liked how that punky-thrashy beat played during quiet segments at the start so that it's totally up front. That helped build tension or anticipation. Other than that the drumming wasn't too impressive in terms of tastefulness but then again it was probably best to leave it that way since this wasn't exactly a prog song where the drumming is expected to be flashy and intriguing.
    The musicianship is great, conveying vibes effectively however the song as a composition felt a bit underwhelming....incomplete, I dare say.
    There was a brief moment around 04:20 when the growalist (growling vocalist, I came up with that term just now, lol ) sounded like Jon Nodtveidt in Dissection's Reinkaos album. Nice B)
    The vocals are very well recorded and mixed in this song. Wish the focus was more on the female vocals than the growls but overall the vocal mix was good.
    A hurdy-gurdy sounds similar to a bagpipe except it works on strings....from what I remember. Interesting instrument indeed.
