Hope you find this coloured pencils lesson and project useful. I'll be uploading more projects like this (and a bit more advanced) in the coming weeks. There are lots more of my free lessons over at ArtKula.com if you don't want to wait!
I like that it is step by step in real time and shows the whole process with a reference photo as guidance and comparison. Awesome especially the real time and dtrp by step
It’s the simple subjects which teach best, I think. All paintings are made of simple subjects, each needs individual attention and then continuity within the composition.
Phil, I wanted to thank you for the informative and helpful tutorial. Your explanation of how and why you chose those colours with such a limited palette was very enlightening. It was helpful to see how you started laying down the colours and creating transitions. Your thought process was well-described and easy to follow. Additionally, I really appreciate your easy-to-listen voice.
Great to watch this excellent demo again after several years. I needed a refresher lesson, and it’s really very thorough. After the first time I watched it, I did a very satisfying drawing of a doorway from the south of France, which is now framed and hung up. Thanks again Phil.
Thank you, Phil. I loved this video. I've just read through your free guide and I'm looking forward to creating this drawing and learning how to use colored pencils. Your future projects also seem interesting and challenging.
Phil: I am currently enrolled in your Draw Awesome course and loving it. I have never done anything with colored pencils, but I sure am looking forward to doing some in your Draw Awesome course now!!
This is an excellent lesson demo. I like how you compare and get a feel for the original photo on what colors will emulate the color of the pear. I am new to colored pencils and techniques and looking forward to giving it a try with my own projects. Thank you.
This is awesome!! really easy to follow the instruction and techniques. Hope you can make a tutorial about how to draw a pearl with colors pencils. Thank you in advance🙇♀️🙇♀️ love your videos!!
this is a truly fantastic tutorial. But you know that luminous green you rejected at the start? that would have beautifully given you that reflected light green at the bottom of the apple.
Thank you. A very useful exercise. I did use a blender pen, however, because I unwisely (I'm still experimenting with paper) used a textured pastel paper. Even pressing hard left lots of paper showing through but the blender worked well. Can you recommend paper that works well with coloured pencils?
Thank you for this great lesson. I'm a complete beginner but still managed to pick up a few valuable tips eg. mixing /transitioning colours or living the highlights free. I would be grateful for some general advice as to paper; should it be smooth or toothy etc. When I draw the paper gets clogged up and won't take more pencil at some point.
Hi, always enjoy your videos. I have the Fabriano toned paper, sand colour, and I've struggled to colour on it. Am I doing something wrong? I still see like holes, if I can say that, where the pencil has not coloured and when I rub over with my finger or tissue, the colour wipes off, leaving it looking dull and like I've not coloured much. I've used Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor pencils.
hey what do you mean by squinting the eyes exactly ? I'm not sure I get this right I can"t see the shadows any better trying to squint or close my eyes what am I doing wrong ?
and this is why I don't care of colored pencils... they are too fiddley and take waaayyy too long to produce results. A watercolor painting could be done in 1/3 the time.
It isn't a race to see who gets finished first. You see fiddley, others might see an opportunity to focus and meditate while expanding their observational abilities. Plenty of room for all techniques.
@@renel7303 Sure.. depends upon what your goals are... my goal is to create something tangible in the 30-60 minutes a week I might have available to me. If you have 3 hours to create a small object with colored pencils and enjoy the layering and blending of 5 shades of the same color... then more power to you! 🙂
Why are you even commenting on a video about colored pencils technique? People watching this are actually ready to spend that extra time because they love colored pencils. It's like if I were to go to a watercolor painting video and say how that is not for me because I hate brushes (and it's not, because I couldn't care less about watercolor).
@@eliciabonnieWell.. if you did do that I would say.. GREAT! you are sharing YOUR OPINION with others.. making conversation and perhaps sparking a lively debate about brushes and watercolor... that is what the COMMENTS section of youtube is for. Thx for reading my comment and starting a conversation about it! 🙂
@@pesto12601 but this is not a debate it's you telling us we should use something else, like none of us ever tried other methods to draw. We're into colored pencils, we don't care if watercolor painting takes less time. That's not the point. We want tricks to improve with pencils, not brushes. For that we'd obviously be watching the wrong video. So if you don't care, don't comment here to patronize colored pencils users about the wrongs of our choices and rights of yours. Newsflash we don't care.

You are an excellent instructor who broke these foundational skills down in a truly understandable and doable fashion. Thank you for the lesson!

Amazing! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Best coloured pencil video I've seen. Most people concentrate on application. Choosing the colours was really useful.

Thank you Phil. My previous attempts at drawing have ended in frustration but your thoughtful videos are exactly what I need to get started again.
Great tutorial.
You're the best instructor for me, anyway. Thank you so much ❤

My mental health.

brilliant, moved on from colour pencils but will go back and try this pear, cheers
Brilliant lesson as always regards Steve
Thanks Steve :)
Really inspiring video. Thank you
Awesome
Great video! Thanks for sharing 😊
Perfect love it
Being colorblind I tend to use less colors. I just work on getting values right rather than trying to match color.
I can see colors and use the same technique. Values are more important than color
You should use graphit or charcoal then
I'd imagine you're a better artist because it's harder to concieve the colors you use, my gratitude goes to you ❤
Thank you for a fabulous tutorial. Watching step by step is really helpful.
Very impressive lesson👍👍👍
excelent!

i have crayola colored pencils in hand and im ready! Wish me luck... 🤣
I like prismacolor pencils which are wax based. But I also like inktence water soluble.

If you download the free ebook from the link beneath the video it covers paper recommendations for coloured pencils

How did you transfer/trace your original drawing to your drawing paper, please?

If you buy the Faber Castellated 24 pencils today, the colors/numbers are different, at least they are in set I bought from Amazon in U.S.
Just a beginner with coloured pencils. Where do I find your ebook?
If you click on the title it's in the description. Click on "more" to find it. Happy drawing. 😊
Gheeze, take a photograph. Good technique practice tho.
Where is the reference photo
See the link beneath in the video (in the video description)
Why would you want it to look like a photograph?
It's called realism!
You mean what someone else did a couple years ago.
🤓really?.🤨🙄
