Baradwaj Rangan is one the best interviewer to listen to...And it's really interesting to see even the greatest filmmakers talk to him with so much passion. Thanks Film Companion...🙏❤️
Given that he has to review ALL movies, not just the good ones... I cry for this man I mean, just think about all the junk churned out just to burn money to avoid paying I.T.
The need to place an actor high up the altar is pathologically high in the Tamil crowd ... This is how MGR, JJ could establish a political base in TN politics: what is their acting/political prowess otherwise? The language gets atrociously narcissistic when our crowd calls the above sinname, sigarame, etc ... Is it necessary? The trend sadly continues with Vijay, Ajith, etc too. And our menfolk will get excessively defensive because I criticise the above ... All Rajnikanth has to do is to display swag at every turn: not act. The crowd is happy. The crowd gets slightly intellectual when it comes to Kamalahassan but still far from reviewing him technically. And sadly speaking, a whole lot would shame the latter over the former on personal grounds. I pray the above changes.
After Kamal Haasan.. I think Ajith did a variety of roles regardless of heroism/socialism/positivity in character and doing so till date.. Very Very Underrated.. Citizen Athipatti role, Varalaru with feminine touch, Villain disabled character, Mugavari depressed performance, Mangatha badass and lot lot more.. He trusts the director's vision and I don't think any other Hero would dare to do such roles and pull it of like him.. Even Vikram denied the Varalaru role.. After all I am a fan of Vijay since childhood but Ajith is unique daring ultimate star
Nice interview. Have been reading BR' blog reviews since the early 2000s, when he was still in a corporate job. Good insight into films and film reviewing. Very important to be able to watch all types of films by entering that world. Whereas the regular film goer would watch a film either because of the director who made it or the cast and crew they like. Not a lot of people are immediately willing to watch a film they know nothing about or they don't know who the cast and crew is. Would like to know about how it all started. An insight into his childhood, BITS Pilani engineering background to corporate job life to taking the plunge to becoming a movie reviewer.
I agree with your point of view towards Heroism in Tamil Cinema. I think many actors are afraid of leaving their comfort zone because they give importance to safety. I also wish that they would experiment more and would take some "risks". I think some of them have to get off their high horse and become actors rather than heros. An actor is someone who should be able to play any chatacter which is given to him/ her. And yes the old formula/pattern gets boring sometimes that the main lead is always the good one, but these are roles which actors like Vijay and Ajith prefer to play. Even when they start the film the "Hero" being the rowdy at the end it always turn out him being the good guy and everything what he deos is right. Maybe they learned some lessons from last decade from Movies like 96 or Super Deluxe etc. And perhaps we see some changes and surprises in this decade😊 And also some new faces😉
I too watch 50-60/month global cinema from Tamil to bengali to korean to isreali to argentianian & been doing it for over 2 decades before the netflix started . His reviews sense are good however he is quite biased on several occasions & shows a lot of superiority complex by looking down on commercial cinemas
Many people are against him for liking commercial films like Bigil, Sarkar and Viswasam. And the word bias doesn't make sense here because his review is not about whether the audience would like it or not, it's about his perspective of the movie. Even is he is the only 1 who liked/hated the movie, he is going to give his thoughts even if it doesn't match with the audience. We can say his opinion is not what majority audience felt but bias is not the right word
Its not watchable in theatre's its meant for mobiles and laptops. You go to a theatre to have a different experience and you should feel like you are in different world.Malayalam just show the reality of life and some of them are dragged.
