24:49 Marques ... He's right, go to a furniture store. You can actually pick what you want that way. And if you're having trouble, you can actually rely on the sales people. I spent months looking for a couch, burned myself out, and stopped looking for a year. Then, I decided it was time. So I went to the furniture store I liked the best and explained it to the salesman and then said "Can you please show me just 3 couches, that are like [description], and around $XXXX." He showed me the 3 couches, I asked a couple questions. Made my choice. Took like 30 min, if that. And I'm super happy with the choice.

I definitely don't think that they sell that well overall in China and the rest of the world. The iphone sells for massive discounts in India during the festival season around august September October. I got my iphone 13 for less than 499$ converted during that time. When you go out nowadays in metro cities of India, you will find 4/10 people owning an iphone which is a big jump from even 2 years back when it was around 1-2/10. The discounts apple pushes in India is making the Indian consumer choose it over the chinese brands. Also, In the Indian society apple phones are a status symbol of how well you are doing in life.

On the TikTok paywall subject -I’m a short form cooking creator and I have no idea why people would pay for recipes behind a paywall when there is so much free stuff out there. But, I know a few creators who sell either individual recipes or a bundle of them on their website from $3-$20 and while it’s generally a low conversion rate compared to views, they have made $4k+ in a month doing this. So my gut reaction was similar to Andrew’s but seeing this creators experience I would guess more people will pay for stuff than I would think. Sorry for the book

On the ecosystem lock-in at 1:00:00. I think what it comes down to in the apple case is that they build up a very high level of integration, within that ecosystem. And some of the following points were kind of mentioned but I'd like to summarise them again:
    - The integration is not only showing on the surface with apple exclusive features and seamless interactions among apple devices
    - The integration of the hardware in the perspective of systems integration and supply chain integration when designing and building the products. And also reusing parts over generations and between different products
    - Building high and low-level software specifically for that hardware or their OSs
And to conclude, this position of apple was build over many many years with is mindset in place from the beginning. And in that position they always were able to charge premium prices and build upon that dominance while saving money at the process that is already feeding them well.
And just to mention, there are obviously other facts that make Apple a very successful company.

Hi WVFRM cast members. Great pod as always. Apple's phone models being top sellers could be due to a multitude of reasons globally.
    1. As mentioned by you guys, there is oversaturation of phone models by android phone manufacturers. Samsung has 8-10 phone models released per year, creating no solidarity in the numbers when purchased numbers being totaled up. The same can be said about other brands.
    2. Android flagships really do suck since COVID started. Yes, they are "feature" rich. But when they can't nail easy basic features like battery life, durability, camera optimizations, its just not worth it to make an android phone purchase. An Iphone that's a year or two older, is still more well rounded than a cutting edge android flagship that does 1 good thing, but suck at the rest.
    3. Skewed data. It's quite possible that the data above, only skews to the upper and lower(working) class. Upper class people have been linked in social studies to the purchase of Iphones, whereas lower (working) class would favor more lower range android phones. This data mentioned in the podcast only links purchase numbers to smartphone models. As mentioned by David, Android as a whole still dominates the smartphone market share. Upper class people purchase smartphone on a yearly basis because they have the money. Lower(working) class people purchase phones on a yearly basis because their lower range phone breaks within a year and most of their work requires the usage of the internet and a smartphone.
    4. David talks about this, ECOSYSTEM. Apple creates an ecosystem that is an inescapable walled garden. People like to trap other people in this ecosystem.
    5. Refer to number 2. Android really just suck now (I still use android btw). I have a Samsung A52s phone from 2021. The A53 from last year and A54 from this year is very disappointing spec wise, with a massive price bump to boot that just doesn't make the model worth it any longer.
If this happen to a popular midrange brand, you can imagine that other popular good value phones from the same and/or different smartphone brand have made really bad value phones within the past few years.
The worst culprit to this are the phones with Snapdragon 695 SOC. It's a weak/slow processor, but having it manufacturers can slap "5G" on the box and hope that it would be a strong selling point.
It's stupid and ludicrous that now in 2023 we are still using a snapdragon 600 series in our midrange phones.

Here's one for your review check segment. I once bought a jacket with elbow patches and I didn't realise until I was out wearing it that one of the elbow patches was on the wrong side of the sleeve. So one elbow patch was facing forward and one elbow patch was facing backwards. Not the best time to first notice the error lol -1 star for quality control and -1 star purely because I had to embrace it all night 😂 3/5 from me.

having recently learned about Fruitger Aero, i’d love to see y’all have a convo about tech design aesthetics throughout time! like im curious about the ways in which both the cultural context, and the technology of the era influences design choices. maybe David could do another investigation/report like he did w/ the 7 keys to the internet!
great episode as always, Studio Team 💜

That top 10 looks sketchy at best. In just the EU the SG A33 and A53 are in the top 4. The iPhone 13 is #5. The Pro/ProMax rank higher. I suspect this list might be US, not global.

    • @artdogg50
      @artdogg50 Год назад

It feels mostly like a US list masquerading as a global list. Market share versus units sold don't often tell the same story.

David, make sure you pick adequate exercise clothes. Cheap clothes trap sweat and bacteria and fungi can grow. Though only women can suffer from yeast infections because of exercise leggins that don't have adequate ventilation, the same rule applies to men's exercise clothes. Be safe and do your research. Also, if you think about it, value is better described over time. If you get 5 cheap pieces of clothes that you have to throw out within the year - or less- vs one that can last you 3 or more, what is actual value? Value for your money and value for the environment. If you really don't care about clothes and prefer value, try thrifting. Get some great quality clothes at a lower price!

Idk if this means much, but when my mom bought me my first phone, she asked her coworkers--the younger ones, or those with kids, specifically teens--what kind of phone was popular with kids/younger generation and what would be a good choice and they said an iPhone. So that's what m mom bought and I have been stuck (happily and accustomed) in the Apple ecosystem ever since despite the fact that everyone in my family has Samsung. I am the oldest cousin on both sides of my family and all the kids under me who have phones have Apple. So you have this situation in my family where the entire family is split between older and younger generations and Samsung and Apple respectively. I got my first phone around 2015.

43:13 - talking about that upscaling.
We have some mobile processors, AFAIK last Snapdragon flagship one, as well as Exynos, are capable of RT.
Since they have some RT cores, this could be applicable to some mobile phones.
Let's say you're on mobile data and you would like to reduce data consumption, you reduce the video quality and turn on upscaling.
Would say that's a nice possibility.

I was surprised at how the gang were surprised at the iPhone's popularity on a global scale. I go to work and almost all of my coworkers flash around anything from the 12 to the 14ProMax. Although purchase power parity is significantly skewed when the U.S. and my region are taken into account, it doesn't stop folks getting their hands on the latest Apple tech.
Couldn't really blame them if the devices serve their purposes.

    With the "ecosystem" talk:
I'm currently trying out the Galaxy Tab S8+ and the fact that I Have to download an app, made by Samsung at least, to make it interact with my phone with notifications, calls(?), etc. already makes me want to hold on to my iPad Air 4th, and just rejoin the Apple life in EVERY thing but a computer. All of it just Works Well Together and I loved that about Apple. Samsung, and even Google, has Got to get their respective ecosystems working better because I'm thinking now, I return this Tab S8+, I wait a year, pay off my S22+, and go right back to Apple, cause it all works seamlessly right out the box.
