Tim enrolled in the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts as a mature age classical piano student, and then realised that he didn't have the classical chops to pass the course, so withdrew and went his own way. So glad he did!
There's a great deal of Tim material to enjoy. From his musical comedy to his Broadway musical compositions to his more serious studio albu and even the hit TV show Upright which he both stars on and co writes. Strongly recommend all Tim Minchin material, he hasn't written a bad song yet and Upright is so beautiful so make sure you have the tissues handy for both seasons!!
Not sure if people know the background to this but Tim wrote this song as an up yours to Sony (listen to second verse about Sony) who wouldn’t sign a recording contract because his music lacked depth and wouldn’t appeal to the teenage market. Hence his spin on Pearl Jams Jeremy during the song.. watch again with this in mind and it all makes much more sense.

Tim Minchin's performance was also a satirical comment on Pearl Jams song Jeremy. If you listen to Pearl Jam and then listen to Dark Side, you will notice Tim Minchin is saying talent comes second to having a 'Dark Side".

i kinda found it funny that you described him as "effortlessly funny" i know you meant it as a compliment and i dont disagree but the way i would describe tim is more one of the comedians who puts the most effort into his comedy, and i think this song is paricularly a good example of this "work/art ethic"

Actually I disagree, neither works without the other. Tim would not be even half as successful if he were not a prodigy when it comes to the piano. Lyrics are meaningless unless you have the musicality to back it up.

Tim is a skilled pianist and a great entertainer. My favourite Tim's song is rock n roll nerd, check it up if you like his style

Another musical comedy act you would absolutely love is Flight of the Conchords. Their HBO special they done is pretty damn legendary.
