  • Over the 13 years of our marriage, we gradually weaned ourselves off of tv. We share all about our experience and what that's been like for our young family.

My son is about to be seven and has never watched tv or a movie. I wish we could meet other families/friends his age that are at least hardly ever watchers.

That is awesome, I am old, and as a child the TV was only on at night, 2 hours? News and a regular show. I remember Bonanza, was one of them. I was a country kid, and my time was mostly outside. I think you are doing a good thing. Enjoy it while you can. Your children will grow and make their own choices later.

That seems like a much healthier balance than our childhood experience. Thanks for sharing and watching!

High five! I got rid of mine 10 years ago, and that was the day I actually started living my life.
It sounds weird, but I don't get bored anymore. I used to, when I did have tv, but without it, I don't think I have once. There's constantly something to learn or explore or get done. In fact, I only stumbled on this video because I wanted to learn to make cheese and yours popped up. It was a great video and soon I'm gonna give it a go. Thanks for teaching!

Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing! We can definitely echo the getting bored thing... once you start pursuing your real passions there just isn't time for it. Thanks so much for watching and happy cheesemaking as well! 🧀

Our children enjoy Friday night fun night. One hour of either Doc Martin or Andy Griffith. We did not have it for ten years at all, and I personally would prefer to go back to no tv.

    No tv
    No devices
Even in their teens, they do NOT need phones
I would get a laptop to teach them computer things and typing on, (maybe for educational games too) but not before age 10-12. Handwritten before then is imp.
Movies are nice a few hrs a week but if dad can’t control his tv usage, just get rid of it. My kids had/have to ask to turn on a movie but answer was usually no.
Music we play alot tho! We have a cd player. We listen to books alot too.

Kids will always find something to do. I can tell the ones on devices mostly as they whine about it and claim boredom but they eventually learn to join in with the normal kids (way less common now, yes-but they’re the normal ones still)

We have a television set. We have Wii, the original one, and watch movies on it. It isn't hooked up to any television service or have an antenna, though. People act like we are crazy! I was approached at Sam's one day about switching our television provider. When I told them we didn't have one or want it, the guy laughed and said he'd never heard of that before.... 😂

Really enjoyed this video guys, thank you! As a child, tv was a deep source of anxiety for me. Between the news and mystery shows my parents watched. But on the flip side I also used tv as a distraction and "coping mechanism" for my anxiety as well. SO UNHEALTHY!! I often wonder how much better my anxiety could have been as a child, had I not had the option for it, or simply had limits on it.
My husband and I have not had a tv throughout our entire marriage, and have full intentions of being very disciplined with keeping it that way when we start having kids in the near future. Thank you guys for all the content you put out. I am always encouraged and blessed by your content! Many blessings- Kate

I try to limit TV time for our kids by making it a treat at the end of the day after our school day and chores are finished. I see children and toddlers with devices all the time when we are out. That is something we have just never done. Our oldest son has a cell phone because he drives, and we want him to be able to get help in an emergency. We use it for grocery pick up or directions if we are on a trip. We also don't pay for TV. We have internet and a smart TV so we can stream most things for free. I would love to get to the level at which you all are. My husband however likes his TV so I will have to settle for cutting the time down and not out. Love the content you are putting out!

The best i can think of is old fashioned local in person lessons! Our kids take violin with a local instructor. There might be local groups you can join too. I started playing guitar at church a couple years ago and have learned and grown a lot in that time just from being challenged in that environment. Good luck! Thanks for watching!

That can totally be challenging when everyone's not on board. Maybe try introducing it in fun but subtle ways. Like a no technology family night where you bake something or play a game together. For a while we did a family Amish night (doesn't have to be called that) where we put away phones and screens, dimmed down the lights, maybe even lit candles, and just did things together like read books or played games. Just an idea. All the best and thanks for watching!

Hello, new follower here! I don't think zero TV is ever going to be our family's reality but we are pretty intentional about what we do watch-- travel and nature shows on Discovery Channel, a handful of RUclipsrs, and a few cooking shows are our favorites. However, we are definitely considering limited/purposeful screen time for our little ones who are just around the corner. I think the biggest setback would be interference from extended family and friends, but then I'm expecting that regarding a lot of the decisions we will probably make. Do you experience criticism or interference from your own family and friends about choices you make for your family, and how do you overcome it?

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  Год назад +2

That’s a really good question. I think those comments bothered us more initially but overtime they’ve gotten less and less or else I just don’t care or notice them anymore. I think as we’ve gotten more confident in our values and the choices we’ve made for our family, it’s gotten a lot easier but it’s been a process! Thanks so much for watching and all the best!

Thanks for sharing and kudos on taking those steps! You're setting a great example for your kids, which is the best teacher. Just like habits take time to build, they take time to change. One thought might be to slowly implement new habits over time that can help those around form new habits. Like a short family reading time or playing a game together might be something your child really looks forward to as time to connect with you that can replace at least some of that tv time. Just some thoughts! Keep it up! And thanks for watching!

Controversially, while I do think we need less screentime, I do think we should be making nurses' lives easier when trying to do a necessary procedure on a little person who might make it difficult.
The distraction isn't because the nurse doesn't want the kid crying, it's because kids flinch and thrash and might hurt themselves. Anyway.
I also think that TV is just one more way of telling stories, and stories are great fuel for play and imagination. I think kids need less or even no screentime before they can read and write, but I also don't want my kids disconnected from the wider culture. I knew kids from when I was one who didn't have a TV and they just were so left out of conversations and games with kids that were based on cartoons etc.
It's a tough choice, but it sounds like you're thoughtful about all of it, so I'm really happy it's working out.

Kids not in front of screens are nearly as apt to thrash about. They are self calming, self discoverers AND mom was right there.
