oh god the whoel student film part made me scream out "Stop i kinda get where you are coming from but you are giving the normies the wrong sense of what it is to be a gamer" i feel like i need to slap the dude who made that and then have a long talk with him about why he is an addict and why games arent at fault for it
Inspiring. I am a part of this generation touched emotionally by fictional worlds we can interact with. The experience has left me with an intensely creative mind, and I believe I now have some direction, some cause to devote this creative energy toward. Thank you so much for this video.
I felt that student VT portrayed video games in a bad light - all that crap about losing his grip on reality, the lines between games and real life being blurred and depictions of real life violence looking more game like??..??.. I found it quite disturbing and it has clearly come from a disturbed mind. the media would have a field day...
Video games allow us to live many different lives in many different worlds. They allow us to gain a deeper insight of ourselves and possibly issues that we are faced with. Many of the philosophical ideas that we are faced with in games hit us quite hard and ring true. Take any game that gives you a choice. There's a reward and consequence. There's a balance. Bioshock is quite notorious for being a deep and dark game. It shows the truth of consumerism and hyper-individualism.
Right on that point! The only well spent money the Gov't does these days. Back in '89 they had cutting edge tech for tank sims. Spend a few 100g's per video game sim for training vs. wiping out a million dollar tank, the cost of ammo, and also the pulling the trigger on a pixel numbs you to pulling that trigger on flesh and blood. I saw a History Channel show on what they have now, and it looks like their still ahead of the tech.
It wasn't meant to be a professional video. It was a heart to heart disclosure from one gamer to anyone who would listen. He wanted others to know they are not alone in addiction. I use that term in a real sense, because video games have all the qualities of other addictive substances. Instant gratification, great pleasure, ease of use, accessibility, and loss of reality. Sincerely, A recovering video game addict
Holy fuck. What a talk. I look at the future of video games and am simultaneously thrilled and utterly horrified. I remember Half-Life 2 was a tremendously immersive, realistic experience that had my heart beating like crazy. I don't play video games so much anymore, partly because I don't have the time, but there is always the temptation...
I remember the first time I beat Mega Man 2. I was maybe 8 or 9 years old, and up til then it was my most triumphant moment. The song that plays during the credits is what turned me on to trance music. Mega Man 2 changed my life.
I already feel that games are more involving and meaningful than real life. Life is fixed and limied, while videogames let you be whatever you want to be, along with the added bonus of being able to start over.
I used to read about David Perry in my old game mags and I owe it to him along with others such as warren spector, ron gilbert, john romero etc. for making me go from a gamer to game designer. Thank you, David. I even had a dream about him last night (weird, I know) where he turned out to be one of my relatives lol how I wish
"What am I spending my time on?" "Thousands or millions of others have and are going to play this very same game, and ultimately accomplish very little" well i gues you don't read books, listen to music, or watch movies because you can ask yourself the same question. hell, you can even ask that question about watching this video. the only real question you should ask yourself is, "am i having fun?" or "is this going to benefit me in the future so that i can have more fun?"
I'm 25, and enjoy video games as the art work that they are. They can evoke emotion, draw us into their worlds and let us do great things. They can build up our confidence and enable us to see paths to victory in the real world. About once a week I host a LAN party at my house for friends and family. The last one I held even my mom showed up, which was funny because she's not really a gamer and I had to show her how things worked. Everyone had a blast (you know, once I got over the shock that my MOM showed up at my condo to play video games). Studies have shown that video games strengthen the part of the brain that is associated with a reduced risk of metal diseases. Whether or not that means that gamers are at an actual reduced risk of metal illness only time will tell. However, when I was in college I was very addicted to video games, in particular, World of Warcraft. My grades suffered, and I had to retake at least one class (that I can think of). I left college with a 2.9 GPA and still easily found a job. In the end, the video game addiction didn't truly hold my carrier back, but still, stressful times. All this is to say, in moderation, I believe video games are the best and most rewarding art form, with even fast paced shooters like Call of Duty being beneficial. We are all human though, and we do not all do everything in moderation.
World of Warcraft in october 2010: players: over 12 million revenues/month: 196 million usd revenues from the installation of the game: 2,4 billion usd (calculated with 50$/expansion set)
nedloh, "this video is not availble anymore" is a occasional error youtube experiences, try reloading the page it should come up, im watching it right now.
I believe, most people will spend most of their lives plugged in the future since learning, play, entertainment, news, connecting, and making a living will be better in it.
I think you misunderstood the kid. When he talked about "teaching" respect, he didn't mean "repeat to people that respet is important ad-nauseam". I think his plan was to create STORIES and interactivity within games that make people experience the kind of situations where they would usually learn about respect in real life. The big difference between learning these things through IMMERSIVE gameplay and real life is that the values transmitted in-game can be manipulated by the designer.
There is only so much information you can put into 20 minutes. It's meant to make you think outside the box and to inspire you to deal better with the overlapping of realities and how you can use that to your own advantage. The short film is a very well put together example of someone who's taken the time to think about gaming and how it's advancement has influenced us in our daily lives. Of course its going to be personal.
I think we might end up living in half-matrix pretty soon with the improvements of augmented reality devices, it will start with the augmented reality glasses (in testing by google) and soon the augmented reality will be way more convinient/fun/whatever than good old unaugmented reality.
Amazing, this presentation pioneers in conveying the true messages video games bring to us. They are emerging as artistic expressions, philosophical stimuli, social mediums, emotional experiences, and, most importantly, genuine entertainment. However, the video title needs some work. A more accurate title would say something along the lines of "The modern video game is becoming something which underlines, broadens, and brightens the experiences of life."
the line between real life and the video game. there are people and will be more people that won't beable to tell the difference between games and real and if that line is crossed than the world as we know it will be gone
The truth is video-games are amazing things, they teach us how to broaden our horizons on imagination, not to give up reality and spend 24/7 on a computer! Outside is more real than a computer could EVER be. And besides, we're already coming up with 3D games that DON'T need glasses!
Even if this is a rather old panel now, I'm still extremely surprised he talks about Entropia Universe at 4:47 onwards, because it's a game that almost "no one" knows or talks about; it's that "underground". In overall though this was a extremely infromative and interesting panel to watch and listen by a wise game developer.
sweet. World or Warcraft (WOW) is probably going to announce they have 15 million users by the end of this year. Right now they are between 12-14 million, and they have a huge expansion pack releasing in November.
It's not very often that I get abuse over a post written 3 years ago...but leave it to videogamers to be the ones to do it. I never met a group with so little interpersonal skills that they automatically resort to cursing and verbal abuse against anyone they don't agree with.
I agree mate, I didn't mean it as harsh as it sounded. These people need help, but I do still believe that they are playing on the rest of us, 50 years ago it was a case of get on with it, too many people are taking advantage of this 'lets find a reason for this' approach.
What's the first FPS game called that starts at 8:23 ? My school had a Playstation and the big guys were playing this game so I'd like to know, I remember how the smaller kids like me were sitting and thinking how awsome they were :)
at 19:02 I would disagree with you on that point. The most important reason why people get addicted to video games would be an escape. most of the people i know who play video games often (being a 17 year old boy that is nearly all of my guy friends) they all play video games to escape how "crappy" their life is or to "enhance" their life. Fun is not as immersive as a term as escape is and th depth of how people play games now is more than just fun. It may just be semantics but its important.
I really liked the evo timeline video, but I feel too many people now days judge games by their graphics alone. I know it's really the first thing people notice, but many of the old games are still just as fun today as they were 30 years ago. I'll take Pac-Man (1980) over Lair (2007) any day! Unlike movies, games don't have to have flashy video fx and 7.1 Dolby to be enjoyed.
I think you're missing his point. He could know more about the car that you're driving than and he could have learnt that from a video game. He's essentially trying to say that we are getting closer and closer to a world where we can effectively simulate reality for it to become a training tool. In a video game, his cars can go up 320 kmph, his driving reflexes probably won't get challenged in the real world in the same way so driving in a game is better for him.
As amazing as these games are, I can't imagine getting the same thrill that I get while water skiing, or the same calm as fishing from a canoe on an Alaskan Lake, or the same fulfillment that I get from reading to elementary school students, or the same taste as Pad Thai. It is a good thing that the gap is closing, but there is a long way to go.

Can we watch the student movie about his addiction somewhere else? It just ressonates with me , that storry! i wanna show it to other people but withouth david perrys part!
Ryan, I think we are in the same wavelength, I just want to put across that I know they need help and understanding, I was actually a nurse, but I couldn't handle it, but I still believe there are too many people taking advantage of the system, grace only goes so far...
What the fuck is it with these noisy ads on the video suggestions? RUclips, if you're going to show ads at least give us the choice of using the mute button.
I feel bad for the video game addict in the video presentation. He has no life outside of video games, no girlfriend, no real life experiences. Am I one of the few born in the mid-1980's that enjoys video games as much as I enjoy going out and talking to real people, hiking, drinking with friends, interacting with others or doing outdoors activities? How sad for that man who admitted he lives his life in front of the TV playing games. Very sad!
Life is the canvas and video-games are but a single stroke of the brush. The best moment of the best game can't even begin to compare to your first kiss. Even bad things, like getting pulled over by a cop, stimulate more emotion. If life could be likened to an RPG, you're all still level 1's running around beating on the same old level 1 mobs. Level up already! Take some new quests. Try a college course. Make a friend. Burn something down. Go hunting. Raise a family. Vote for your government.
this sort of mirrors what will wright was saying when he gave his TED talk on spore. wright wanted to create games that show us implications of macro decision making and maybe that could potentially create within us a sense of responsibility and purpose. unfortunately his game sucked, but the potential is still there. video games as an emotional experience is already here for millions. take the half life 2 series for example.
If you look at an atypical heroine addict and an atypical video game addict their behaviors are much the same. Just as with people addicted to just about anything that gives them pleasure its just a matter of maintaining their own identity separate that which they are addicted. When the thing desired becomes your life it destroys that life sometimes fast or slow but inevitably "you" are ground down and all that remains is the need.
But you must understand that because people are unique individuals, experiences cannot be compared. As such, his life may be far more satisfying to him than anything you've experienced. And does it matter that his is a virtual world? The argument that reality is real is insufficient without detailing what makes real better. Just a thought.
"But maybe brainwashing isn't always bad... Imagine a game that teaches us to respect each other... Or helps us understand all the problems we're facing in the real world." This is so very tragic. "teaching" people how to respect each other won't help them understand the moral reasoning behind respect - it will be an artificial, temporary 'understanding'. You either have it in you, or you don't. Living and learning is the only genuine way to become a compitent, genuine person in society
Note: This keynote was done before the iPhone, before casual games had a place in the industry, so most of the statistics shown will have changed drastically by now. The average age of a gamer has dropped and the value of the gaming industry as a whole is far above their predictions.
As the average millennial ages, their time spent gaming decreases. That means gaming will always be thought of as a hobby, not a substitute for actual daily life.
Video games already are better than real life.
+WiiAnd360WithMe :,( its true
so weird watching videos where they talk about the future and i am here right now,in the future (at least from their perspective at that time)
true story
And here I am still waiting for Star Citizen...
yeah, wot about half-life 3? comon, HL 1 was in the video he showed...
Bruh
Wow looking at the videogames he showed in the montage, 2006 feels like a really REALLY long time ago.
talk about "a really REALLY long time ago"
I was at that video game music concert at the Hollywood Bowl that he mentioned. Great show!
Watching 5 years later and still as relevant and thought-provoking as when it was made!
oh god the whoel student film part made me scream out "Stop i kinda get where you are coming from but you are giving the normies the wrong sense of what it is to be a gamer"
i feel like i need to slap the dude who made that and then have a long talk with him about why he is an addict and why games arent at fault for it
The game addict video seemed more like a grasp for attention more than a meaningful message.
who's supposed to watch videos like this and went straight for the comments
Inspiring. I am a part of this generation touched emotionally by fictional worlds we can interact with. The experience has left me with an intensely creative mind, and I believe I now have some direction, some cause to devote this creative energy toward.

Really wish they re-upload it with a higher quality. Amazing video.
One of the best TED talks I have seen.

i love how they keep showing the older audience members to see their reactions.. and they are like mmmm.. ok.
Video games can definitely make you cry. I cried several times during the course of Mother 3.

Video games > Life
love the "poem"

As a games designer, on the other hand, I found it thought-provoking and inspiring. Interesting, that.
Wow the 240p really takes me back lol
still no half life 3 :(
can video games make you emotional?
last of us comes out
that's what I was thinking the entire time I watched this
Okay, but consider the following: Life is Strange
Undertale, that's it.
Undertale! Wow, talk about a game that's good at first and crap in hindsight...
Definitely. Silent Hill 2 made me cry every time I came across that specific point in the game. In literally every playthrough.
Four Tet - My Angel Rocks Back and Forth....a beautiful song
it subtracts somewhat from the graphic display when the vid is only in 240 p

This dude is a british legend : very creative (EWJ among others) talented programmer, and also very funny
Exactly note how he was playing SM world while he was talking about his problem.
Even if this is a rather old panel now, I'm still extremely surprised he talks about Entropia Universe at 4:47 onwards, because it's a game that almost "no one" knows or talks about; it's that "underground".

That PS3 boomerang is a hell of a timestamp.
Danman350 hi

With a mini-map at the top right of the screen?
07:23 Star Wars in the Star Trek font
I agree mate, I didn't mean it as harsh as it sounded. These people need help, but I do still believe that they are playing on the rest of us, 50 years ago it was a case of get on with it, too many people are taking advantage of this 'lets find a reason for this' approach.

@derman077 for gamers sure.
The issue is for those who haven't invested their life in video games, will they see it in that same light?
YES!!
Someone recognizes 1984!!!
He just made my day.
Or how come you decided to upload all this beautiful stuff?
just as a heads up video games is not one word.
Thanks man. Just got it.
i cried at the end of planescape: torment. only game to make me cry, so far.
at 19:02 I would disagree with you on that point.

Wow. i believe this is a very good story and really appriciate.
Is that the beach from Final Fantasy 8 at 12:38?
That's true but that statement just blew me away!! I hope he's just saying that for dramatic effect.
The whole series are incredible! And it was exactly the same for me, I cried too.
It's true... I'm the world's biggest Half-Life fan!
have you heard about half life alyx_ Im one of the biggest half life fans too
Good video
A little melodramatic with the video addict
really enjoyed the evolution portion
5 stars for that alone !
I think the next BIG thing in games is AI
Graphics are approaching a Technical plateau
Facial Graphics are the hardest to duplicate
Due mostly to 2 factors Muscles of the face connect directly to the skin and ther4e are many more subtle muscles in the face
and Thousands of years of facial communication
which give away emotion
there was a few shots of Halo 2 with split screen =./
Too bad the video is not from 2014, we have some truly sick graphics nowadays.
Btw, 8:52, does anyone know which game that is? And the one after it too.
Project Gotham Racing 3 or 4, and Motorstorm.
*****
I was really excited when I got an answer, until I found out none of them are for PC -_- Thanks anyway.
I tend to agree. The potential for identity crisis issues is huge. Especially with fully immersive RPG type games.
so is this conference pro or against video games?
It seems like both. A good conference always shows the good and bad sites of a topic. Logically, any excess comes with consequences.
@Robstailey The reason why you've heard so few female voices is because a LARGE number of games are not multiplayer games? The players of "The Sims" are probably 70% female. Then we got Sing Star and such.
Maybe a 43% is a bit much but I'm sure females make around 30% of all gamers.
Absolutely!
Can we watch the student movie about his addiction somewhere else? It just ressonates with me , that storry! i wanna show it to other people but withouth david perrys part!

I feel pretty sad for that addict too. I was like that once, and still bear the marks.
What the fuck is it with these noisy ads on the video suggestions? RUclips, if you're going to show ads at least give us the choice of using the mute button.
I feel bad for the video game addict in the video presentation. He has no life outside of video games, no girlfriend, no real life experiences.

where can i find that student's video?

The Speaker: Extremely good.
The Student: Oh Come On Dude! We're not that far into gaming yet...
