I also see nothing wrong in Pola’s behaviour at the double funeral of Rudy. She really loved him. He may have loved her on the rebound of his divorce from Natacha, but she clearly made him as happy as she could when they were together. She could be very temperamental and jealous when he seemed to be playing around like with Sheila Loughborough. He wasn’t ready to commit himself to her but also didn’t want to lose her. No one knows how things would have worked out if he had stayed alive. It must have been terrible for her to lose him and also see what his once fabulous body looked like in death, how terrible he had suffered and how emaciated he was. She never realised how ill he was and that he had no chance of survival. She was making a movie (Hotel Imperiale) at the time and leaving the production would have cost the studio an enormoud amount of money. If she had known about the severity of his illness I am sure she would have left the film to be with him. She must have felt so quilty for not having been at his side when he needed it most. All that made it so much harder to come to terms with his illness and death. She says as much in her autobiography. That she married rather quickly later with Serge Mdivani is very understandable even though it was stupid. Mdivani started to visit her a lot after Rudy’s funeral, comforted her and also looked a lot like Rudy. He didn’t love her and only took her for her money. He ruined her financially completely and also had affairs with other women. She even has been pregnant with his baby but got a miscarriage in a thunder storm. She never got pregnant again. She remained friends with Rudy’s family and helped them whenever she could. I think the Hollywood media committed character murder on her, because it sells. She certainly wasn’t perfect, but the ridiculing of her grief she didn’t deserve.
I agree with you that there was nothing wrong. Everyone grieves in their own way. She was a bit theatrical but that was her right. I wanted to point out how she continued to respect Rudy long after she didnt have to. 1933 she was fretting about him being in a borrowed grave. 1976 she sent a telegram to the Academy that was read to the audience there for a 50th anniversary of his passing, and 1981 sent the huge spray of flowers to Alberto's funeral. Not to mention her private visits to the Valentino crypt with Antonio Altamirano. This previously unreleased information shows a softer side to Pola than the public ever knew of.
Something that I have only recently discovered, that Pola Negri lived and passed in my hometown of San Antonio! Sadly I was just a kid, but I would have loved to have met her. I'm so glad she never forgot Rudy. Thank you for posting!
Something tells me that, despite the theatrics at his funeral, Pola Negri really did incur a genuine loss with his passing.
Who knows?
Had he lived, she may have been the right wife who would have had his children and they would have grown old together.
The possibilities regarding their relationship that ended only account of his passing will forever be a mystery.
She may very well have envisioned a life with him that would continue into old age and it may have been a broken dream that forever remained with her at heart 💔.

This video was beautifully thought out. I really don't know what to think of Pola's actions. She seemed to be a very dramatic woman. I'm sure that she had deep feelings for Rudy. May she forever rest in peace.
Pola Negri really did feel a genuine loss with his passing.
It was merely his death that did them part, not a divorce or any other matter.
She probably envisioned a future with him that would last forever and it became a broken dream she kept at heart 💔 for the rest of her life.
She kept in touch with Albert Valentino and may have really regarded him as a true brother-in-law that never came to be.
Either way, RIP 🪦 to both Rudolph Valentino and Pola Negri.
After almost 61 years following his passing, they were reunited. I imagine he awaited her at heaven’s entrance with open arms for her undying love and affection.
I totally defend this woman's right to fall apart at the sudden death of her lover. Not many woman had the privilege of having Valentino as their man. Pola Negri was keenly aware of what she had lost. I believe I might have behaved worst than she did. 😨😢🥺😓🙄😰. RIP PN

why did valentino get a borrowed grave? youd think some studio head or friend could have bought one. they arent that expensive. doesn t make sense
The "borrowed grave" issue is often misrepresented. When Valentino died in NY at the age of 31 he had made no provisions for a burial place. Many in Hollywood requested that Alberto allow his brother to be buried in Hollywood where he made his fame. His sister Maria wanted him brought to Italy for burial. Natacha wanted him in the Hudnut family plot in New York. The Hollywood crowd won out and June Mathis offered temporary use until a final resting place could be arraigned. She died 11 months later unexpectedly and he was taken out and moved over one slot, and June was laid to rest where Rudy had been since Sept 7, 1926. In 1933 Balboni contacted Alberto about paying/buying the space Rudy was in, which was for himself but since Balboni was returning to Italy, he wished to sell his crypt outright. Bank of America by this time was adminstrator of the Estate, as Ullman had stepped down. Bank of America paid Balboni for the crypt. Now he no longer rested in a "borrowed" grave. However the transaction was private and not then publicly known. By 1936 as the 10th anniversary of Valentino's passing was in the news, articles and movie magazines still stated that Valentino was still, 10 years later in a "borrowed" grave. Of course this was not true. Pola's telegram in the video to Walter Winchell was in response to these claims of being in a borrowed grave. I hope this time line helps to clear up any mis-information that has been floating around. Some RUclipsr's are STILL saying he rests in a borrowed grave. He's not.
