Just a little helping hand. Actually putting to half or a quarter resolution disable cashed playbacks. Cash your renders only plays smoothly if set in Full. Try it & you'll see.
I will add a little tip here... I use Shutter Encoder to create my proxies using hardware acceleration, because if you try to create proxies with the free version of Resolve and h.265, you will get a media error and will be unable to use those files. Basically Resolve 18 won't let free users use proxies created in the program that have any hardware acceleration behind them. So create the proxies outside resolve - I choose 50% size, half my usual bitrate, copy the audio, hardware acceleration and .h264, as I have found that Resolve can't even use h.265 files created outside the program occasionally. The benefit here is I can create my proxies much quicker, and all I have to do is, "Relink proxy media" to my source files in Resolve.
Thank you very much, DreamBills can be a great help for users who use the free version, it's great that you contribute new information in the comments! Also, some cameras, such as Canon ones, can record proxy files on a secondary memory card, it serves as a backup, and you can also use those same files in Davinci as proxies.
I use the free version and my system specifications are minimum . i find your tip helpful . can you mention the steps for creating the proxy files and how you link them in davinci resolve .
Awesome video, the best on the subject. I love the fact that you showed us how to use the Magic Mask in conjunction with the Sky Replacement effect AND that you showed how to use an external sky. Thank you.
another tip I have found on page 161 of Beginners Guide Lessons - the online DaVinci Resolve tutorials - "TIP You can switch back to the Keyframes Editor and hide the video scopes when the scopes aren’t needed to free up your graphics card’s processor and improve playback performance." Hope this helps someone else as well. Cheers my friends.
Thank you, extremely helpful. I just upgraded my graphics card that only produced a small performance enhancement. Lotsa settings in Resolve! Just a few clicks and voila!!!

Something that I never see mentioned that caused me so much trouble was having the render cache set to D drive which was a HBB drive, caused the system to run terrible, once installed SSD - lightening fast
Hi! Are you referring to storing the cache on the same hard drive where you have the operating system and Davinci Resolve installed? If so, it's not advisable to do that. It's always best to store the cache on a different hard drive, even if it's an HDD.
Thank you for this video! I try working on an external ssd and moving all of the files you mentioned in this video over there, however it is very messed up and i need to relink the path mapping every time i use it as well as update the render cache files locations - my harddrive does also not show up with a letter (F: /D:) in front of it - maybe because I am working on a mac? I need help 🙃
Thankyou for the tips, best explanation I've seen. I need to use these every project. I find that I have to change the playback timeline proxy resolution and the render cache for every project, is there a way to save these settings so they become my default settings. Just watched your amazing video, and your right, it is amazing 👍 and you get my subscription.
Im quite new to davinci myself but i think you could create a template with all the settings you want, then when you start a new project from the template all your settings are done, can save a lot of time
@@SergiomotaENG Creo que también estoy suscrito, se te entiende muy bien en ambas idiomas, teniendo en cuenta que soy extranjero! Muchas gracias por compartir tus conocimientos !
When I click the render cache to smart, it doesn't show the red and the blue line.. I'm wondering if my DaVinci Resolve 18 does not doing the auto rendering.
I use MacBook Air m1 , but generating proxy doesn't change anything on the playback , still same frame rate after generating proxy even I tried every proxy media formats ,why please help !!!
I like your videos. They tend to deal with topics I need to know more about, being new to Resolve. In talking head segments, many of your videos have excellent quality of audio, but it’s out of sync. I would like to avoid this, so I have a couple of questions. How does it arise? What should be done to fix it? So far, recording audio with my Z6ii or iPhone has preserved sync. I thought I read Resolve has a way of establishing sync but haven’t researched that. Is it applicable to your situation? I haven’t investigated Multicam as yet, haven’t looked into timecode Equipment, but if you have and care to do a video, I would certainly watch it. So, thanks for putting forth such high quality videos!

With minor effects like rotoscoping some clips and transitions Or should i look at a different software for video editing i
I have a different problem the video is running smoothly but when I add a transition it starts lagging and I can't evaluate how's the transition doing is there anything I can do about it ?? and where I can get more transition than what are already available in the program ???
If you apply a lot of effects, I recommend using the optimized media method, that is, the one that appears on the bar above the timeline, when it is blue you will be able to reproduce it well. In the video description I have Davinci links for transitions, effects, templates...
The options are outdated in this video. You just changed the title to Davinci Resolve 19 but the video interface is of an older version release 1 year ago. The option "Timeline Proxy Resolution" has changed to "Timeline Playback Resolution" in Davinci Resolve 19
Great work all around here, sir. I really enjoyed this and a couple of other videos of yours.(the mask video was amazing) I want to invite you to a brand new Resolve group I am starting. The goal would be to make the best Davinci Resolve group on the internet. (It's not a Facebook group) Iove to have you over and get your thoughts on the project. If possible please let me know. Thanks a lot! The video of the magic mask has been liked a lot, its reception is incredible. Thank you very much for the invitation to the group, but right now I can't cover more, I have two RUclips channels on my own, all this takes me a lot of work and I hardly have time, I can't add more projects.
is it possible to use Render Cache and Proxy in combination ? I have a scene, which stutters even when using the lowest proxy resolution, so i need to render this scene. When i activate render cache it does exactly that, but i need to switch back to proxy, because editing is not really possible while render cache is activated. Once you activate render cache you can't use proxy playback and voce versa. This makes editing very slow and uncomfortable. Maybe there is a solution to this. Also the render cache should only be saved in the project or source video folder. You can do this for proxy files, but not for the render cache.
Sorry for my late reaction, but I just discoverd these lessons just this week (@Sergio : thumbs up!). I tried what you suggested: Timeline Proxy Res on 1/4, Render Cache on Smart. On my computer I don't see much speed gain, but it works. When I edit something on the timeline, the blue line is broken up with with red parts, but rendering starts and they are gone! On the fly and only the red parts are re-rendered. Hope I did understood your remark and helped you out with this.
@@lexvdn unfortunately that does not work properly. You may see the red areas become blue and they will render in full resolution, but as soon as you switch to timeline quarter proxy resolution the cache is not being used. There is also an error in DaVinci that once you switch back and forth between the render cache options the proxy resolution will change but not being updated in the menu settings. If you manually switch the proxy resolution to full and back to quarter you will see that the caching is being stopped and the red bar does not become blue anymore. Once you switch back to full it starts working again. To test this, you need to have a clip, that has very heavy effects on it, so it would not play back without stutters in quarter proxy resolution. Of course the OFX effects needs to be activated for the render cache in the clip popup menu. You can now activate the render cache and wait until it's finished. After this switch to full resolution and playback should work. But once you get back to quarter resolution it stutters again, since the render cache is not being used.
@@lexvdn using the "ReLight" FX on a 4K clip on my RTX 4070 is a good example. I cannot play back the clip without stutters in any resolution. Strangely enough, it does not even play back in full resolution even after the render cache has been done.
@@lensflareclips You are right. Didn't look into it properly. Indeed switching to 1/4 resolution stops rendering. I found that setting Timeline playback resolution to 1/4 helps a lot on most cases, sometimes using the rendering cache. But with very complex manipulations on clips, the rerendering takes a lot of time. Tried to use the Relight on one of my clips, but no joy: my computer can't handle that at all (Win 11, Intel i9 11th gen @ 3.5 GHz, 32 GB mem, SSD 1TB, GPU Nvidia Quadro P2200) Oeps...
Hi kelly! It can be done, you can use another computer to take care of rendering. That is a function that very few people use, focused more on companies or professional users, I think that for this video it would not have been useful.
1. Fast media drives. Cheap drives will play most codecs. 2.Transcode delivery codecs like h264/h265 to codecs like ProRes/DNX 4. Import in DAW. 5. Read about cpu/gpu/diskspeed and codecs.
